Since 1990, Miami-Dade County's Environmentally Endangered Lands Program, also known as EEL, has acquired more than 20,000 acres of rare and unique habitats, some of which feature some plant species that exist no where else in the world. The goal is to manage and protect these lands so that this and future generations can enjoy these unique areas. Besides offering much needed green space in a development heavy urban area, these habitats also serve as a safe haven for area wildlife.
