The background for this project is that my grandmother (92 years old) is overwhelmed with all the remote controls. She is happy when she can set the channels and volume on the TV. However, the German TV program has increasingly degraded and the "good old movies" no longer run. There are seniors who use Amazon Movie or Netflix, however, grandmother can not. Other seniors can manage with senior remote controls and can operate media players. I have thought of a simple 2 button remote...

A brief explanation of how the new Inflation Reduction Act will actually ease the horrific inflation we have been living through. It will make us ENERGY INDEPENDENT and will catapult our transition to renewables while creating millions of new jobs. It will limit pharmaceutical costs for seniors. GAS AND DRUG PRICES WILL DROP. Our deficit will drop by hundreds of millions of dollars. We are on the road to recovery. This bill is good for all of us.

Recently, investigators in behavior and community disciplines have advocated the adoption of positive prevention approaches for life transition problem-solving. Techniques in physiological, cognitive, and behavioral modalities were incorporated into a broad-based intervention program focusing on the acquisition of coping responses to handle life transitions for a group of adolescent high school seniors. Indicators of many kinds are used to monitor critical aspects of national life and inform public policy. These include economic indicators, health indicators, and demographic indicators. For more than a decade, the National Assessment Governing Board has been conducting research to determine the potential of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) at grade 12 to serve as an indicator of academic preparedness for college and job training. This report provides the rationale for...

In this paper, I use a nationally representative sample of American high school seniors in 1992 to examine change and stability in the employment patterns of youth as they make the transition from high school to college. Students with weak attachments to the labor force in high school tend to remain unemployed during the first year of college. Conversely, students who work in moderation while in high school have the highest odds of enrolling in college and working while doing so. Compared with...

Do "generic" skills such as critical thinking and written communication matter in the workplace? A recent study indicates that, in addition to a student's major in college and the selectivity of an institution, better performance on an assessment of critical-thinking and written-communication skills is associated with higher rates of employment (Arum & Roksa, 2014). The data used in this study come from college seniors who took Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) in spring 2014....

Poor motivation is commonly cited as a concern when interpreting results from low-stakes standardized tests administered to postsecondary students. This study investigates the associations between test administration procedures and students' self-reported effort and performance on the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA), an open-ended test of college students' critical-thinking and writing skills. Coefficient estimates from a series of hierarchical linear models revealed that paying students...

Some universities administer standardized tests to estimate school effects on student learning. To that end, many of those institutions choose to gather cross-sectional data (freshmen and seniors in the same academic year) rather than longitudinal data. The effects of this decision on institutional assessment results are generally unknown. The study reported here compared longitudinal and cross-sectional school effect estimates using data from 25 schools that administered the Collegiate...
