East Kootenay conservationist Eddie Petrashyn explains how forest conservation policies intended to protect dwindling numbers of British Columbia's southern woodland caribou herds from logging initiatives are not achieving this in practice. He proposes possible solutions, but says the situation is urgent with a window of about ten years to change the paradigm relating to how the province operates the forestry sector. This interview by Chris Cook was recorded on April 9th, 2022 for Gorilla Radio...

Background The helmeted honeyeater ( Lichenostomus melanops cassidix ) is a Critically Endangered bird endemic to Victoria, Australia. To aid its conservation, the population is the subject of genetic rescue. To understand, monitor, and modulate the effects of genetic rescue on the helmeted honeyeater genome, a chromosome-length genome and a high-density linkage map are required. Results We used a combination of Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, and Hi-C sequencing technologies to assemble a...

Indigenous seeds are grown by the farmers over the years with a strong influence from local natural factors. Such seeds have a higher level of intrapopulation variations and the capacity of buffering the adverse factors. Understanding indigenous seeds along with their diversity are useful to diversify their uses, to assess conservation status, to know the factors making farming areas red zone, and to improve their performance. Selection is the simplest and most common method for the improvement...

Has a lid from your Purple Martin gourds ever come lose and blown away in a storm, never to be found? If so, here's a replacement lid you can print yourself. This should be compatible with Troyer or "Troyer's Birds' Paradise"-type gourds. Deliberately made to fit tightly to avoid loss in storms. If you find it is too tight to screw on, I suggest using a pocket knife to shave off a small amount of the crest of the thread to give it more room. Multiple file formats included, including...

All Mountain caribou in Canada are at risk of extinction, and none more so than the southern Mountain Caribou of BC and Alberta. Herds have been in decline for over three decades. In March, the federal government rejected an emergency order under the Species at Risk Act to protect the threatened caribou. We speak with Charlotte Dawe, Conservation and Policy Campaigner for the Wilderness Committee.

Friends of the Eel River Force FERC to Comply with the Endangered Species Act There's a proposal to remove the fish-blocking Scott Dam on the Eel River but looming problems still remain. Cape Horn Dam, just downstream of Scott Dam, technically allows for fish passage through its fish ladder--but that's only when the ladder is properly functioning and the trouble is that fish often can't use the ladder because it gets so choked with rocks and debris. So what good is the removal of Scott...

A new large-scale development project has been proposed for an area smack within the South Street Seaport Historic District. Last year, the BC government expanded its wolf cull program in an attempt to protect endangered mountain caribou in the province. The adoption of this strategy was based on a study by Robert Serrouya and others at the University of Alberta. But when biologist Lee Harding went back into the data Serrouya used, he found that killing wolves had no detectable effect on the caribou populations it was trying to protect. We talk with Lee Harding.
