One large and a few smaller fires were detected near the US-Mexico border in the Mexican state of Baja California Norte on July 1, 2003. The largest fire is actually a group of four fires (see high-resolution image) burning in the foothills of the Sierra de Juarez mountains, southeast of Tijuana, which makes a grayish patch on the Pacific Coast at the U.S.-Mexico border. Other fires are visible farther south. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid...

Even through heavy smoke a number of actively burning areas of the McNalley Fire in Sequoia National Forest north of Kernville, California, were detected in this image from the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured on July 24, 2002. These active fires are marked with red dots, and they provide evidence of the struggle firefighters face: the fire is only 5 percent contained, and active on multiple fronts. Begun Sunday, July 21, the fire has consumed...

ERAST Demonstrator 2 (D-2) in flight during 1996. The Demonstrator 2 (D-2) was built by Scaled Composites of Mojave, California, to test remote flight-control capabilities. As a result, it had only limited provisions for a scientific payload. The D-2 was also unusual in that it could be flown by either a pilot in an open cockpit or by remote control. It was powered by a 100-horsepower Rotax 914 piston engine turning a three-bladed propeller. It late 1996, it was flown to test the vehicle's...

The Bell Aircraft Corporation X-1E in 1955 on the Rogers Dry Lakebed near the NACA High-Speed Flight Station, Edwards, California. The X-1E was notable for being shorter, with a thinner wing than the X-1A, -B, and -D. Aerodynamic heating caused the ailerons, rudder, and elevators to remain unpainted throughout the X-1E's flight test program. When the ventral fins were added, they were left unpainted too. On August 31, 1956, the aircraft reached a top speed of 1,480 miles per hour (Mach 2.24)....

STS073-706-012 (20 OCTOBER - 5 NOVEMBER 1995) --- Each of the great bridges spanning San Francisco Bay are captured in this near-nadir photo of the San Francisco and Oakland, California, areas. Starting from the south (left in this photo), Dumbarton, San Mateo, Bay, Golden Gate, and San Rafael bridges are seen. Ribbons of run-off induced sediments color the bay, and multi-colored salt-production pens line the southernmost shore.

This photo was taken June 18, 1956 on Rogers Dry Lakebed after Flight 7 of the Bell Aircraft Corporation X-1E with NACA High-Speed Flight Station test pilot Joseph `Joe' Walker at the controls. The first generation X-1s were well known for nose gear failures and the X-1E was no exception. The hard pitch down on landing usually resulted in a collapsed nose gear. The damage rarely was serious but required several days of down-time for repair. The X-1E was the only one to have a true tail skid to...
