A METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR THE THEORETICAL DETERMINATION OF THE CIRCULATION OF A LARGE SPAN SWEPT WING USING LIFTING SURFACE THEORY. BY SOLUTION OF AN INTEGRAL EQUATION, EXPRESSIONS ARE DERIVED FOR THE INTENSITY OF THE WING VORTEX LAYER ALONG AND AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE FLOW. THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF THE SIMPLER BUT NONRIGOROUS ''THREE-QUARTER CHORD'' METHOD OF DETERMINING THE CIRCULATION. USE OF THE LATTER METHOD IS SHOWN TO BE JUSTIFIED FOR SWEPT WINGS OF LARGE SPAN.

A test program is described to demonstrate liquid-free gas venting of a subcritically stored cryogen using a passive retention/expulsion system. The test plan is specifically aimed at verifying this capability for the dual-screen-liner concept, independent of gravity level and direction. In addition, the test is designed to yield operational characteristics data for the dual-screen-liner, including: tank filling, frequency and duration of venting, cryogen temperature and pressure histories,...

The feasibility is investigated of using nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) for slow freighter ships traveling from a 500 km low Earth orbit (LEO) to the Moon's orbit about the Earth, and on to Mars. NEP is also shown to be feasible for transporting people to Mars on long conjunction-class missions lasting about nine months one way, and on short sprint missions lasting four months one way. Generally, it was not attempted to optimize ion exhaust velocities, but rather suitable parameters to...

The overall NASA Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) program consists of a series of chemical releases from the PEGSAT spacecraft, the CRRES spacecraft and sounding rockets. The first chemical releases were made from the PEGSAT spacecraft in April, 1990 over northern Canada. In addition to the releases planned from the CRRES spacecraft there are releases from sounding rockets planned from the Kwajalein rocket range in July and August, 1990 and from Puerto Rico in June and...

Two Aerobee 170 sounding rocket payloads were flown at the White Sands Missile Range: (1) a focusing X-ray collector on 31 March 1972; and (2) a high resolution telescope on 4 August 1972. Data has been reduced from each of these flights. In the first flight both the rocket and the experiment instrumentation performed adequately, and it is clear that at least the minimum scientific objectives were attained. In the second flight the attitude control system failed to point the telescope at the...

Data from AN/FPS-16 radars are available for two of the flights and are used as a basis for evaluating the AN/GMD-2 data. Slant ranges and vehicle velocities derived from the AN/GMD-2 compare favorably with those derived from the AN/FPS-16 data. Vehicle altitudes derived from the AN/GMD-2 are consistently lower than those derived from the...

The penetration of gaseous nitrogen into liquid oxygen at a pressure of 150 psi was determined by monitoring the composition of the evaporating liquid in a nitrogen analyzer. For pressurization times of about 1 hr the penetration depth varies between 0.0024 and 0.018 in. at an evaporation rate of about 1 gal/day. These are small compared to the penetration depth of 22.2 in. measured in the 7-inch high temperature tunnel at a pressure of 1500 psi, pressurization time of 5 min, and evaporation...

The High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) flew aboard a NASA sounding rocket on 2012 July 11 and captured roughly 345 s of high spatial and temporal resolution images of the solar corona in a narrowband 193 Angstrom channel. We have analyzed the fluctuations in intensity of Active Region 11520. We selected events based on a lifetime greater than 11 s (two Hi-C frames) and intensities greater than a threshold determined from the photon and readout noise. We compare the Hi-C events with those...

A rocket based combined cycle inlet geometry has undergone wind tunnel testing and computational analysis with Mach 4 flow at the inlet face. Performance parameters obtained from the wind tunnel tests were the mass capture, the maximum back-pressure, and the self-starting characteristics of the inlet. The CFD analysis supplied a confirmation of the mass capture, the inlet efficiency and the details of the flowfield structure. Physical parameters varied during the test program were cowl...

A sounding rocket attitude control system is reported that uses rate integrated gyros operating in both closed loop and open loop modes at very low drift rates. In normal operation the gyros are zeroed on a nearby star and torqued to the proper location in the closed loop mode; rate output is electronically integrated to provide a position displacement signal. Once closed loop torquing is completed, the caging loop is opened and the gyro is operated as angular displacement sensor to provide...

The recent launch of the High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) as a sounding rocket has offered a new, different view of the Sun. With approx 0.3" resolution and 5 second cadence, Hi-C reveals dynamic, small-scale structure within a complicated active region, including coronal braiding, reconnection regions, Alfven waves, and flows along active region fans. By combining the Hi-C data with other available data, we have compiled a rich data set that can be used to address many outstanding...
