New York National Guard service uniforms were often cadet grey in colour and during the U.S. Civil War their grey clad troops could be mistaken for southern rebels. The regular army adopted khaki service uniforms in 1898 also with epaulettes an cuffs in branch colour, khkai instead of cadet grey as seen here.

Produced in the 1980s, this Cold War National Guard recruiting film shows the Guard conducting war games with Bell helicopters and M-60 and M-48 tanks. Voice-over explains the importance of the Guard and the benefits to being part of the nation's oldest branch of military service. Basic training is shown. A drill instructor is shown at 2:00, and advanced training at the 4:20 mark including truck driving, welding, cooking, computer operations and more. Women members of the Guard are also...

The last remaining viable population of Regals in the eastern United States faced eradication because the Pennsylvania National Guard was expanding tracked vehicle maneuvering areas. Why? So Fort Indiantown Gap would survive the base closings. BTW - 1997 is also significant because the Gap's poorly designed tank live-fire range was shut down due to stray rounds. The tank range was built in 1994 to save the Gap from closing.

Rumors about a tank training range in Clearfield County were confirmed, not by Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) officials, but by a Pittsburgh newspaper. DMVA was silent. The silence bred suspicion. Quotes from Clearfield County residents range from, “Why all the secrecy?” to “It stinks.” There was even a public meeting, but the Guard declined an invitation to attend. Guard officials wanted to meet township officials. But the Guard didn't want the public to know about...

The plans for a tank training range in Clearfield County were not announced in a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, but from staff writers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. One constant in each newspaper article is the Guard spokesman stating that Indiantown Gap “doesn't have enough room.” You are correct, Sir. Fort Indiantown Gap is an old-fashioned World War II era installation. Its training corridor is too small for live-fire of today's...

Governor Tom Ridge was confident of the Pennsylvania National Guard's site selection work. “They're the experts.” Two Pennsylvania lawmakers penned a letter to Ridge, warning him of the Guard's decision, made with little public notice. The land, being considered by the Guard, is owned by a generous contributor to Governor Ridge. The landowner is a member of a club known as the “Governor's Leadership Circle.”
Topics: stony creek, lawmakers, governor ridge, pennsylvania national guard, clearfield county, training...
A member of Governor Tom Ridge's “Leadership Circle” claims his connection to the governor had nothing to do with the state choosing his land for tank training grounds. “It's a coincidence.” Another landowner in Clearfield County says his land was passed over in favor of Ridge's longtime campaign donor.
Topics: stony creek, clearfield county, governor tom ridge, leadership circle, tank training, fort...
The Pennsylvania National Guard decided to delay its decision to purchase the Clearfield County land from a Governor Ridge donor. The spokesman for the Guard said the delay was needed for the engineers to find answers to key issues, such as noise, dust and water pollution. Spin. In reality the investigators from the Office of State Inspector General were closing in.
Topics: stony creek, pennsylvania national guard, tank training, fort indiantown gap, goshen and girard...
Missing from this article, and others, is the fact that the Pennsylvania State Inspector General was investigating the method of procurement. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Department of General Services were buying the land from a large Ridge donor at a price much higher than necessary.
Topics: stony creek, pennsylvania national guard, tank training, fort indiantown gap, clearfield county,...
The Gap spokesman: “We've had a change in leadership … it's important to work together … and this includes assuring the future of the Regal Fritillaries at Fort Indiantown Gap.” Each time the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asked Gap officials to enter into a conservation agreement, they said NO. The threat of litigation in federal court changed everything.
Topics: stony creek, regal fritillaries, fort indiantown gap, fish and wildlife, tank maneuvers,...
The Guard surrendered, not because of the petitions against its plans for Clearfield County, but because indictments were imminent if documents were signed. This was not a routine real estate transaction. This was just another example of Pennsylvania's political corruption. Pennsylvania is ranked in the top ten most corrupt states in the United States. Both John Perzel (Republican) and Bill DeWeese (Democrat) served terms as Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Both were...

In 1997, Congress amended the Sikes Act, to require the development and implementation of Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans (INRMPs) on all domestic military bases and installations. This is a power point presentation prepared for workshop participants by the Army National Guard. The focus is on the Regal Fritillary issues at Fort Indiantown Gap.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which oversees the Pennsylvania National Guard, terminated plans to spend $4.3 million on a 4,700-acre tank training site. The state agency blamed “persistent and vocal opposition.” Spin. Missing is the fact that the state agency was investigated by the Office of State Inspector General for failure to show due honesty in the land purchase. The major seller just happened to be a major donor to the Governor with polluted land not...
Topics: stony creek, pennsylvania national guard, tank training, fort indiantown gap, clearfield county,...
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) oversees the National Guard in Pennsylvania. In 1996, DMVA began looking for a tank maneuver area to supplement training at Fort Indiantown Gap. Land was found that met or exceeded needs. However Guard officials rejected that land and insisted on land costing more and owned by a wealthy contributor to the Pennsylvania governor.
Topics: stony creek, pennsylvania national guard, tank training, fort indiantown gap, clearfield county,...
The “second fight” for Stony Creek Valley began with this article. The location of the proposed tank range was crucial for safety. The initial plan was to construct it at the lowest point in the training corridor. That made sense. With the proper construction of backstops, berms and traps, most, if not all of the live rounds would be contained in the training corridor. But the location was changed and clearcutting commenced on the south side of Second Mountain. This indicated trouble for...

Fort Indiantown Gap backed away from the attempt to steal 8,000 acres of protected public land in Stony Creek Valley. Gap officials hoped that a new proposal at the public meeting would calm the objections. Wrong. They were not prepared for an overflow audience of opposition.

The possible loss of the last true wilderness in southeastern Pennsylvania has come to the attention of the general public. The Pennsylvania National Guard wants to steal a portion of the protected public land. It's a foot-in-the-door operation.
