In 1922, Carl Nomura was born in a boxcar in Deer Lodge, Montana. An indifferent student, he was challenged to do better after a teacher told him he should learn to do "something with his hands". He went on to master algebra, trigonometry and Latin and graduated from Van Nuys High school in Los Angeles just in time to be incarcerated in Manzanar with other Japanese families during World War II.
