“Twisted” Bodies Found BY EDGAR MANN 11/10/2001: FORENSIC experts are struggling to identify the remains of what are believed to be five men and two women in various states of decay at a scrap metal yard in Leeds. Details of the investigation into what authorities call a “suicide pact” have not been made available to journalists. Eyewitness accounts described bodies as “fused” with metal in the scrapheap, and said they were “contorted and mutilated” or “twisted” beyond...

We present the screenplay of a physics show on particle physics, by the Physikshow of Bonn University. The show is addressed at non-physicists aged 14+ and communicates basic concepts of elementary particle physics including the discovery of the Higgs boson in an entertaining fashion. It is also demonstrates a successful outreach activity heavily relying on the university physics students. This paper is addressed at anybody interested in particle physics and/or show physics. this is a little model i made, it is a copy of one i made years ago in school, in welding class, i called it #1 because it reminded me of the old oil rigs i see in photos. one fellow told me it looked like the old #1 oil derrick so thats how i ended up giving it that name. i know with the top it will not be easy to print, but i do hope to try to print it some day. this is more or less a personal challenge, but i thought i would share it.

Recent measurements at the LHC of the p-p total cross section have reduced the uncertainty in simulations of cosmic ray air showers. In particular of the depth of shower maximum, called $X_{max}$. However, uncertainties of other important parameters, in particular the multiplicity and elasticity of high energy interactions, have not improved, and there is a remaining uncertainty due to the total cross section. Uncertainties due to extrapolations from accelerator data, at a maximum energy of...

The long-standing anomaly in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon indicates the presence of chirality violating new physics contributions. A possible solution involves scalar leptoquarks with left- and right-handed couplings to the top quark. Two such representations of scalar leptoquarks exist for which the contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$ can possess an $m_t/m_\mu$ enhancement compared to the Standard Model. The leptoquarks also induce loop corrections to $Z$ couplings to muons which probe as...

The shell-model collective-pair truncation with negative-parity pairs is adopted to study the $(h_{11/2})^2$ alignment in $^{132}$Ba. The proton $(h_{11/2})^2$-alignment state is predicted as an $E\sim4.6$ MeV and $\tau\sim 0.5~\mu$s isomer with relatively strong E3 decay channels. The oblately deformed neutron $(h_{11/2})^{-2}$ alignment in the yrast band and four negative-parity bands are confirmed, even although two of these negative-parity bands favor the prolate deformation, which directly...

We re-investigate the effects of the $1/m_c$ corrections on the spectrum of the lowest orbitally excited $D$-meson states. We argue that one should expect the $1/m_c$ corrections to induce a significant mixing between the two lowest lying $1^+$ states. We discuss the implications of this mixing and compute its effect on the semileptonic decays $B \to D^{**} \ell \bar{\nu}$ and the strong $D^{**}$ decays.

Two neutrino double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to excited states of $^{76}$Se has been studied using data from Phase I of the GERDA experiment. An array composed of up to 14 germanium detectors including detectors that have been isotopically enriched in $^{76}$Ge was deployed in liquid argon. The analysis of various possible transitions to excited final states is based on coincidence events between pairs of detectors where a de-excitation $\gamma$ ray is detected in one detector and the two...

Background: 12C has been and is still widely used in neutrino-nucleus scattering and oscillation experiments. More recently, 40Ar has emerged as an important nuclear target for current and future experiments. Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) possess various advantages in measuring electroweak neutrino-nucleus cross sections. Concurrent theoretical research is an evident necessity. Purpose: 40Ar is larger than 12C, and one expects nuclear effects to play a bigger role in...

We consider the inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon scattering. For a transversely polarized nucleon this reaction shows a left-right azimuthal asymmetry, which we compute this asymmetry in both TMD and in twist-3 collinear factorization formalisms. All non-perturbative parton correlators of the calculation are fixed through information from other hard processes. Our results for the left-right asymmetry agree in sign with recent data for charged pion production from the HERMES...

In order to understand the gluon contribution to the nucleon spin, some experiments can study the production of hadrons at high transverse momemtum from lepton-nucleon or nucleon-nucleon scattering. RHIC has recently measured such double spin asymmetries $A_{LL}(p_T)$ for pion production at high center of mass energies, and inclusion of its data to global fits based on NLO collinear pQCD calculations gives some constraints on the gluon polarization in the range $0.051$ GeV/c and center of mass...

The present status of the LHC anomalies found in exclusive semileptonic $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays is discussed with special emphasis on the exclusive 4-body angular distribution $B \to K^*(\to K\pi)\ell^+\ell^-$. The treatment of hadronic uncertainties in this mode is briefly reviewed, and some of the analyses in the literature are critically reassessed. The global picture provided by the global fit points to a coherent pattern of deviations with a significance substantially above 4$\sigma$...

LHCb found hints for physics beyond the standard model in $B\to K^*\mu^+\mu^-$, $B\to K^*\mu^+\mu^-/B\to K^*e^+e^-$ and $B_s\to\phi\mu^+\mu^-$. In addition, the BABAR results for $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu$ and the CMS excess in $h\to\tau^\pm\mu^\mp$ also point towards lepton flavour (universality) violating new physics. While $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu$ and $h\to\tau^\pm\mu^\mp$ can be naturally explained by an extended Higgs sector, the probably most promising explanation for the $b\to s\mu\mu$ anomalies...

Properties of bottom and bottom-strange mesons are computed in two relativized quark models. Model masses and wavefunctions are used to predict radiative transition rates and the $^3P_0$ quark pair creation model is used to compute strong decay widths. A comparison to recently observed bottom and bottom-strange states is made. We find that there are numerous excited $B$ and $B_s$ mesons that have relatively narrow widths and significant branching ratios to simple final states such as $B\pi$,...

An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral $B$ mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a $B$ meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other $b$ hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay...

We review the status of mixing of neutral $B$-mesons, including a discussion of the current precision of Standard Model (SM) predictions as well as the space that is left for effects of new physics. In that respect we present several observables, which are particularly sensitive to the remaining new physics (NP) parameter space. $B$-mixing can also be used to test the fundaments of quantum mechanics, here we suggest a new measurement of the ratio of like-sign dilepton events to opposite-sign...

Disentangling New Physics effects from the Standard Model requires a good understanding of all pieces that stem from the latter, especially the uncertainties that might plague the theoretical estimations within the Standard Model. In the light of recent measurements made in the decay of $B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^-$, and accompanying possibilities of New Physics effects, we re-examine the hadronic uncertainties that come about in this exclusive $b \to s$ transition. We show that it is not trivial to...

We present an analysis of the rare exclusive $B$ decays $B\to K\nu\bar\nu$ and $B\to K^{*}\nu\bar\nu$ within the Standard Model (SM), in a model-independent manner, and in a number of new physics (NP) models. Combining new form factor determinations from lattice QCD with light-cone sum rule results and including complete two-loop electroweak corrections to the SM Wilson coefficient, we obtain the SM predictions $\text{BR}(B^+\to K^+\nu\bar\nu) = (4.0 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-6}$ and...

In this paper we perform a systematic study for the three $B \to (\pi^+\pi^-,\pi^+\pi^0,\pi^0\pi^0)$ decays in the perturbative QCD (pQCD) factorization approach with the inclusion of all currently known next-to-leading order (NLO) contributions from various sources. We found that (a) for the CP-averaged decay rates $Br(B^0\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ and $Br(B^+\to \pi^+\pi^0)$, the NLO pQCD predictions agree with the data within one standard dviation; (b) for $Br(B^0\to \pi^0\pi^0)$, however, although...

In the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we perform a complete one-loop computation of the short-distance Wilson coefficients $C_{7,9,10}^{(\prime)}$, which are the most relevant ones for $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. It is found that, when the model parameter $\left|\varsigma_u\right|$ is much smaller than $\left|\varsigma_d\right|$, the charged-scalar contributes mainly to chirality-flipped $C_{9,10}^\prime$, with the corresponding effects being proportional to...

Rare leptonic decays of $B_{(s)}^0$ mesons are sensitive probes of New Physics effects. A combination of the CMS and LHCb analyses on the search of the rare decays $B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ is presented. The branching fractions of $B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-) = (2.8 \,^{+0.7}_{-0.6}) \times 10^{-9}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-) = (3.9...

The rare decays $B_{s,d}^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ are analyzed within the general framework of the aligned two-Higgs doublet model. We present a complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients, giving a detailed technical summary of our results and comparing them with previous calculations performed in particular limits or approximations. We investigate the impact of various model parameters on the branching ratios and study the phenomenological constraints imposed...

Latest LHCb measurements of $CP$ violation in the interference between mixing and decay are presented based on $pp$ collision data collected during LHC Run I, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$. Approximately $27\, 000$ $B_s^0\to J/\psi \pi^+\pi^-$ signal events are used to make what is at the moment the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violating phase in $b\to c\bar{c}s$ transitions, $\phi_s^{c\bar{c}s}=0.070\pm0.068{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.008{\rm (syst.)}$...

$CP$ violation and branching fraction measurements in $D$ decays are interesting topics as any difference with respect to the Standard Model prediction would be an indication of new physics. With the large data sample collected by the Belle detector, which sits at the interaction point of KEKB asymmetric $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider in Japan, we present the results of searches for $CP$ violation in $D^{0}\rightarrow V\gamma~(V = \phi, \overline{K}^{*0}, \rho^{0})$ decay and the rare $D$ decay...

The use of triple-product correlations is described in relation to the search for $CP$ violation in 4-body charm meson decays. The latest results from the LHCb and BaBar Collaborations are reported. A novel interpretation of the asymmetries from triple-product correlations is used for the BaBar results, which enables the extraction of information on the properties of $D$ decays under parity and charge-conjugation transformations.

We study $D$ - meson production at forward rapidities taking into account the non - linear effects in the QCD dynamics and the intrinsic charm component of the proton wave function. The total cross section, the rapidity distributions and the Feynman - $x$ distributions are calculated for $p p$ collisions at different center of mass energies. Our results show that, at the LHC, the intrinsic charm component changes the $D$ rapidity distributions in a region which is beyond the coverage of the...

Based on 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we report recent results on the decay constant $f_{D^+}$, the hadronic form factors, as well as the quark mixing matrix elements $|V_{cs(d)}|$, which are extracted from analyses of the leptonic decay $D^+ \to \mu^+\nu_\mu$ and the semileptonic decays $D^0\to K(\pi)^-e^+\nu_e$, $D^+\to K^0_L e^+\nu_e$, $D^+\to K^-\pi^+e^+\nu_e$ and $D^+\to \omega(\phi)e^+\nu_e$ at BESIII.

We study the semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays of $B_c$ meson to $D$-wave charmonia, namely, $\eta_{c2}(1^1\!D_2)$, $\psi_2(1^3\!D_2)$, and $\psi_3(1^3\!D_3)$. In our calculations, the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method is applied to achieve the hadronic matrix elements. This method includes relativistic corrections which are important especially for the higher orbital excited states. For the semi-leptonic decay channels with electron as the final lepton, we get the branching ratios...

Studies of D and B mesons decays into hadrons have been used to test the standard model in the last fifteen years. A heavy meson decay involves the combined effects of a primary weak vertex and subsequent hadronic final state interactions, which determine the shapes of Dalitz plots. The fact that final products involve light mesons indicates that the QCD vacuum is an active part of the problem. This makes the description of these processes rather involved and, in spite of its importance,...

We report the results on $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ mixing in the decays of $D^0\to K^+\pi^-$ and $D^0\to K_S^0\pi^+\pi^-$, and CP violation in $D^0\to\pi^0\pi^0$ using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about 1~ab$^{-1}$ recorded with the Belle detector, at different center of mass energies. The mixing is observed in $D^0\to K^+\pi^-$ with the mixing parameters $x'^2=(0.09\pm 0.22)\times 10^{-3}$, $y'=(4.6\pm 3.4)\times 10^{-3}$ and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored...

Newly observed two charmed-strange resonances, $D_{s1}^*(2860)$ and $D_{s3}^*(2860)$, are investigated by calculating their Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka allowed strong decays, which shows that they are suitable candidates for the $1^3D_1$ and $1^3D_3$ states in the charmed-strange meson family. Our study also predicts other main decay modes of $D_{s1}^*(2860)$ and $D_{s3}^*(2860)$, which can be accessible at the future experiment. In addition, the decay behaviors of the spin partners of $D_{s1}^*(2860)$...
