Our long-term goal is to understand the biogeochemical dynamics of the ocean s upper kilometer. Such an understanding is fundamental to prediction of the processes partitioning carbon between atmosphere and ocean and to the redistribution of carbon and associated elements within the water column. Key to predictability is understanding day-to-day variability of processes governing abundances of carbon species (dissolved and particulate, inorganic and organic) in the water column.

A novel fluorophore tagged exopolysaccharide (TEPS) was developed, synthesized, and tested for its potential implications toward locating Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs). Our TEPS exhibited unique and substantial properties that lend well to current change detection processing techniques and allows for significantly improved detection of objects implanted into the natural landscape. When coupled with a novel image processing package, or Automated Disturbance Detection System (ADDS), that...

Two pairs of twin-element, lobe-sweep radio interferometers were designed, constructed and bench-tested for the SECEDE II transmission experiments. One pair operates at a frequency of 145.7644 MHz, the other at 437.2932 MHz. The total of four interferometers are realized with three circularly polarized, broadband log-periodic antennas spaced equally along a two hundred meter baseline with the center antenna common to each interferometer pair.

For the experimental study a flow visualization system was built and used to Study gas flows in microscale. Gas velocity measurements in microscope were conducted using both Laser Induced Fluorescence technique in conjunction with Image Correlation Velocimetry and Molecular Tagging Velocimetry technique. For the numerical study three different approaches were...

High resolution, 4-D environmental characterizations of the physical and bio-optical structure of the near shore and coastal oceans are needed in order significantly improve our understanding of the complex biogeochemical processes acting these regions. Accurate assessments of the vertical structure of the physical, optical, and biogeochemical properties in the coastal environment are also vital to many naval operations (i.e. MCM, ASW). Furthermore, the development of a national backbone of...

The long-term purpose is to develop a new scheme of the acoustical tomography of the ocean of meso- to global scales which is based on measurements of horizontal-refraction angle (HRA) related to different acoustic modes rather than travel time along different rays. The objectives are to develop robust inversion scheme for retrieving 3-D ocean inner structure based on measurements of HRA. In spite of its small value HRA angle can be easily measured with the help of pair of mode-resolving line...

One of the fundamental problems in ocean optics over the past several decades has been a lack of understanding of the source of backscattering in the ocean. Because of experimental limitations and the limitations in available theoretical models, our knowledge of the causative agents for backscattering remains poor. Experimentally, we have been limited by a lack of scattering sensor instrumentation and a methodology for routine measurement of the submicron particle size distribution....

The long-term goals of this project are to identify and quantify specific optical and chemical characteristics of the colored particulate and dissolved fractions of the Penobscot River water system that are associated with defined land use activities (land use proxies), and to determine the scales of variability over which these proxies can be detected both temporally (i.e. seasonal and episodic events) and spatially (from the source into coastal waters).

To make comparisons of short-term lethality on trifluorojodomethane (CF3I) and Halon 1301, 1 5-minute, nose-only inhalation exposures were performed at 30, 50, and 80% Halon 1301. Slight tremors and ataxia were noted following 50 and 80% Halon 1301 exposures. All animals survived and gross examination at 14 days postexposure indicated normal findings. The lack of mortality at these concentrations indicate that Halon 1301 is less potent than CF3I.

The Air Force has expressed a need for an alternative method for evaluating the toxicity of Chemicals. Computational chemistry and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) offer a possible approach to the computer assisted assessment of toxicity. Abstract Building Green explores the experience of environmental architects in Mumbai, one of the world’s most populous and population-dense urban areas and a city iconic for its massive informal settlements, extreme wealth asymmetries, and ecological stresses. Under these conditions, what does it mean to learn, and try to practice, so-called green design? By tracing the training and professional experiences of environmental architects in India’s first graduate degree program in...

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is an oxidizer used as a component in solid rocket propellants, munitions and fireworks. An in vitro developmental toxicity screen was performed to determine the developmental hazard index (A/D ratio) for AP using the hydra assay. The assay employs exposing both adult hydra and 'artificial embryos' composed of disassociated hydra cells to test compounds to investigate developmental toxicity. Results from...

The long-term goal is improved understanding of fundamental processes of turbulence and air-sea interactions. The standard model for dealing with turbulence and air-sea interactions has three components: (1) The ocean surface can be characterized by its temperature and aerodynamic roughness. All relevant properties of the profiles of the mean and turbulent fields in the surface layer can them...
