The growth of monoclinic Ga2O3 nanowires, nano-ribbons and nano-sheets has been investigated. Results indicate that high quality single crystal nanowires can be grown at 900?C using an Au catalyst, while single crystal nano-ribbons and nano-sheets require no metal catalyst for growth. Since bulk Ga2O3 is a promising material for high temperature gas sensing Ga2O3 nanowires and nano-ribbons may prove to enhance the sensing capability due to the high surface area. We have investigated the nature...

During the course of this research we have developed techniques for practical implementation of electron spin resonance in quantum dots. These include a specialized mount for application of rf magnetic fields to drive electron spin resonance, on-chip matching networks for quantum point contacts and single electron transistors, and integrated nanomagnets that give rise to a field differential between two adjacent dots. We have also developed shot-noise-limited radio-frequency quantum point...

A series of hemoglobin samples were received from LAIR. They were stored in two types of containers at 4 C and one set was frozen at dry ice temperatures. These samples were analyzed using ESR for metHb and hemichrome content as a function of storage time. The 4 C samples stored in glass bottles had a very uniform increase in metHb which was linear in time over the five months they were studied. The frozen samples had no changes in their metHb with time once they were frozen. The 4 C sample...

A Single Electron Transistor (SET) turns on and off for an electron added to it. Our goal is to better control and understands the physics of SETs in order to make them technologically useful. Our work has shown that the SET behaves like an artificial atom, in that the number of electrons and the energy are both quantized. The goal of our current project is to measure the electron spin resonance in this artificial atom, when it contains an odd number of electrons. This is an important step in...

In this project, we investigated magnetic property of pi-conjugated molecules and application of spin-radical containing molecule. This report has three parts. First, we will report the results of organic magnetoresistance (OMAR) in field effect transistors. We observed OMAR in ambipolar field effect transistors based on Hex-4-TFPTA. Underlying mechanism of OMAR was tuned by changing source-drain voltage from positive (+100 V) to negative (- 100 V) at fixed gate voltage (+100V). The maximum MR...

Techniques have been developed to quantitatively measure the methemoglobin content of hemoglobin samples using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. It is also possible to follow the buildup of the hemichromes as the methemoglobin decays. This technique was applied to hemoglobin supplied by Fischer and also to samples prepared for us by LAIR. The Fischer samples came sealed in glass ampules. They contained relatively large amounts of hemichromes but their hemichrome content seemed independent...

We report on detailed studies of electronic and nuclear spin states in the diamond-nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center under weak transverse magnetic fields. We numerically predict and experimentally verify a previously unobserved NV hyperfine level anticrossing (LAC) occurring at bias fields of tens of gausstwo orders of magnitude lower than previously reported LACs at 500 and 1000 G axial magnetic fields. We then discuss how the NV ground-state Hamiltonian can be manipulated in this regime to tailor...

A summary is given of the results obtained on this grant. Various experiments were performed to better understand the mechanisms which are important to the crystalline to amorphous transformation produced by ion implantation. From these experiments have emerged several important concepts and processes. These have been reported in several publications and talks, and it has been possible to interpret the results in terms of a composite model for the amorphization transformation.

The goal of the project was to establish the limitations on the transverse spin relaxation of bound donors in dilute semiconductors, in particular in Si:P. The experiments were undertaken in two steps, first using the existing pulsed EPR spectrometer in Prof. Holczer's laboratory, and then extending to longer times after obtaining an upgrade in hardware from Bruker Biospin Corporation.

Radical species which are stable only at low temperatures are investigated by electron spin resonance and optical methods. The initial compound chosen for study was KH2PO4, the deuterated compound also being included in this investigation. 50-kv x-rays produce free radicals in this compound which appear to be completely stable at liquid air temperatures, but decay rapidly above about 140K. Complete orientation data were taken on this compound about all three crystallographic axes for both...

Coherent interactions between spins in quantum dots are a key requirement for quantum gates. We have performed pump-probe experiments in which pulsed lasers emitting at different photon energies manipulate two distinct subsets of electron spins within an inhomogeneous InGaAs quantum dot ensemble. The spin dynamics are monitored through their precession about an external magnetic field. These measurements demonstrate spin precession phase shifts and modulations of the magnitude of one subset of...

The overall objective of this project is to characterize the detailed structural and dynamic response of the estrogen receptor ligand binding domain (ER-LBD) to a variety of ligands ranging from strong estrogens to strong antiestrogens using electron spin labeling. The technical aims for the initial period involved developing site-directed spin-labeled mutants of the ER-LBD and synthesizing new spin-labeled ligands for the proposed studies. We have optimized cell culture production of ER-LBD...

The interaction between two quantum bits enables the creation of entanglement, the two-particle correlations that are at the heart of quantum information science. In semiconductor quantum dots, much work has focused on demonstrating control over single spin qubits using optical techniques. However, optical control of two spin qubits remains a major challenge for scaling to a fully fledged quantum-information platform. Here, we combine advances in vertically stacked quantum dots with ultrafast...

IBM and its subcontractors achieved the major goal of this contract: the detection of individual electron spins by magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). To achieve this result a number of key elements were developed, including a low temperature apparatus capable of detecting ultrasmall (attonewton) forces, specialized cantilever force sensors, methods for manipulating and detecting electron spins with random initial polarization, etc. In addition, both theoretical and experimental work...

One of the most common reference functions used for open shell molecules is the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) reference. While this reference is useful for many molecular systems, it can sometimes suffer from the mixing of high multiplicity states into the state of interest. This phenomenon is termed spin contamination. A number of projection techniques have been developed to correct the UHF reference at the SCF and correlated levels. General implementation of gradients for these projected...

Theoretical studies have been made on the nonlinear operating regimes of crossed-field vacuum devices, in the nonrelativistic regime. The main interaction is a wave-particle interaction between those drifting electrons whose velocities match the phase velocity of the RF wave in the slow-wave structure. The theory is based on two elementary modes: a DC average background mode and an RF oscillating mode. These elementary modes interact nonlinearly via a nonlinear diffusion process, for which...

By ESR spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurement, the ferromagnetic behavior of liver ribosome, ribosomal RNA and thymus DNA was studied. The results obtained strongly suggested that RNA and DNA of high molecular weight are ferromagnetic in themselves and hence they would be so even in the ribosomes or nuclei. Some studies on the brain microsomes were made. Using the method of isolating liver ribosome, it was found that brain ribosomes were also composed of 110s, 80s and 60s component....
