What is the New Testament? How did the New Testament come to be and how should we read it? The Word of God came to reveal God and to reveal God’s love for sinners. His Word is the definitive account of the life of Christ on earth. The New Testament is the witness to Jesus Christ who comes for sinners. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) The God that the New Testament reveals is for us. The whole Bible is about the God it announces...

This lecture discusses the origin of the Canon. The Church, to decide Canon, asked the question if the text witnessed clearly to God’s Son, Jesus Christ for sinners. Does the text witness to, teach, and declare God’s Son Jesus Christ as the revelation of God’s saving love for sinners? The lecture touches upon early Christian leaders such as Clement, Bishop of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp, and Shepherd of Hermas whose works were revered but not included in Canon. Explore the meaning...

This lecture explores the content and theological significance of the New Testament. Consider the basic message of the New Testament. The books of the New Testament all participate in proclaiming the Gospel. Consider that the goal of theology is that humans need a savior and God has come to us as Savior in Jesus. The goal is not just knowing but speaking the promise truthfully that God saves sinners. The New Testament speaks with a lot of voices and its message is God for us. The message of God...

The first module includes an Introduction and an introduction to the sources from which we learn about the Intertestamental Period. Readings are from both primary and secondary sources. What kinds of documents do we use to learn about the Intertestamental Period? Would the people of Israel assimilate with other people groups and religions or would they continue to remain Jewish and not assimilate with those groups? What do we mean by Second Temple Judaism? Consider that exile and redemption are...

Explore the Intertestamental Period and consider a timeline of the Intertestamental Period. In 539 BC, the Jews were finally back home from the exile. John the Baptist in Matthew 11:3 asks, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go tell John what you hear and see: The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.” (Matthew 11:4-5) The Elephantine Papyri...

Consider the Maccabean Period. King Antiochus Epiphanes was tired of the Jews who would not assimilate so he had his men sacrifice a pig in the temple. The Maccabees revolted. Consider that the Feast of Lights is celebrated due to a miracle that during this time one night of oil lasted for eight nights. Consider that palm branches were a sign that the time of the Maccabees had come back.

Explore the Roman Period and consider Josephus’ Story as evidence that problems existed between the Romans and Jews and included lack of respect and insane Leaders such as Herod. Matthew 2:1-3 tells us, “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time of King Herod, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem saying, ‘Where is the one who is born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’ When King Herod heard this he was alarmed, and all...
The first module includes an Introduction concerning Intertestamental literature. Consider four points about the documents to be read in this course. Consider that we should speak about Judaisms, not Judaism - most Jews did not identify with any of the parties. Many textbooks today give a clearer view of Judaism than was possible at the time. Consider that the methodology of approach is very important. Explore points that should be kept in mind when reading the documents. Consider a general...
Explore Didactic stories which were stories written to teach the Jewish people. Consider the background for the Book of Tobit. Tobit’s view was that if you live faithfully to God, God will reward you. Consider that Tobit 14:6 is similar to Isaiah 65 and 66 in that it is about the salvation of the nation. Tobit 4-5 is seen as the theme of the book. The date for Tobit is uncertain and ranges from 8th century BC to 170 BC. What lessons does Tobit teach? Consider that Roman Catholic scholars...
Consider the Dead Sea Scrolls which are often called the Qumran Materials. They are the most important biblical find in the last several hundred years. There are several different kinds of material contained in the scrolls. There are copies of biblical texts and every book except Esther is represented. There are also non-canonical biblical texts. The material contains rules and a book called The Rule of the Community or The Manual of Discipline. 1QS is used to denote the Dead Sea Manual of...
Explore that the Septuagint is often written as LXX (70) because it was translated by seventy individuals. The Letter of Aristeas (Josephus) shows how the Septuagint came about. It teaches that the Pentateuch was translated first and that the translation of the Septuagint was official. It teaches that Ptolemy might not have started the translation. It is more likely that the Greek translation was made for those who had lost their Hebrew in the exile. Consider that there is no one unquestioned...

The lack of good hermeneutics has caused the critical aspect of absence of meaning and the moral aspect of lack of conviction in our society. The societal aspect is radical pluralism while the religious aspect is radical universalism and secularism. The secular aspect is pragmatism. Realize there are different ideas as to what constitutes the biblical hermeneutic process.

Why is it important to do a history of biblical interpretation? Historical framework keeps us from a variety of heresies. Many before us have made a great effort to exegete the Bible carefully. Periods in history include the ancient Jewish exegesis, the New Testament use of the Old Testament, Medieval exegesis, and Reformation exegesis. Realize that Luther's 95 Thesis was a watershed moment in Church history. There is a Post-Reformation period of exegesis and a post-modern hermeneutical theory...

How does Historical, Cultural, and Contextual analysis differ from the history of interpretation? We must ask what did the text mean when it was written before we ask what it means today. There are two horizons to the text- when the text was written and today. The preacher and teacher of God's word must take seriously both horizons. We don't just learn about the culture but we must learn about the context of the biblical passage. There are a variety of different contexts - immediate context,...

Lexical analysis has to do with words and word studies. Syntactical analysis deals with phrases, sentences, clauses, and paragraphs. Words have a range of meaning. Often we cannot tell what words mean by themselves. We need to see words in phrases, sentences, clauses, and paragraphs.

How do we engage in theological analysis? Some hold to a complete break between the Old and New Testaments. Examine the difference between Complete Continuity and Complete Discontinuity. Scripture is best understood in a series of Covenants God makes with men. The Church in the New Testament is equal to the true Israel in the Old Testament. How does the passage fit into the whole of God's revelation? How does the passage fit into the total pattern of God's revelation as it has been revealed at...

How do we interpret special literary forms? It is important to understand the genre of the text. In the parable we look for the main characters and the points that are being made. If there are two main characters, then there should be two main points. Never forget to look back and understand the cultural context. We can't understand how the parable applies to us today without first understanding its context. Consider that parables are truth told slant. Consider what about the story made the...

The genre of apocalyptic literature does not exist in our culture. How would a first century Jew have understood Jesus' apocalyptic language? When looking at prophecy, we need to look at the two authors of Scripture. We need to look at the person writing the text and the Holy Spirit. What did the person and the Holy Spirit mean? Typology is found in places in Scripture where people's lives point forward to Christ. For example, Joseph is a type of Christ.

Applying the text is moving the text from the 1st horizon or time in which it was written to the 2nd horizon or today. A number of question come up when apply the text. Which of the commands of Scripture are normative and which are cultural? Learn to answer the questions, "What?", "So what?", and "Now what?" when considering a text of Scripture to better understand and interpret the Word of God.
