This article is from Diabetes Care , volume 33 . Abstract OBJECTIVE: The study's objective was to assess the effects of automated telephone outreach with speech recognition (ATO-SR) on diabetes-related testing. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We identified 1,200 health plan members who were overdue for diabetes-related testing and randomly allocated 600 to ATO-SR and 600 to usual care (no intervention). The intervention included three interactive calls encouraging recommended testing. The primary...

We present new X-ray spectral data for the Seyfert 1 nucleus in NGC 4151 observed with Chandra for 200 ks. A significant ACIS pileup is present, resulting in a non-linear count rate variation during the observation. With pileup corrected spectral fitting, we are able to recover the spectral parameters and find consistency with those derived from unpiled events in the ACIS readout streak and outer region from the bright nucleus. The absorption corrected 2-10 keV flux of the nucleus varied...

There is convincing evidence showing that the probability distributions of stock returns in mature markets exhibit power-law tails and both the positive and negative tails conform to the inverse cubic law. It supports the possibility that the tail exponents are universal at least for mature markets in the sense that they do not depend on stock market, industry sector, and market capitalization. We investigate the distributions of one-minute intraday returns of all the A-share stocks traded in...

The asymptotic behaviour of the survival or reunion probability of vicious walks with short-range interactions is generally well studied. In many realistic processes, however, walks interact with a long ranged potential that decays in $d$ dimensions with distance $r$ as $r^{-d-\sigma}$. We employ methods of renormalized field theory to study the effect of such long range interactions. We calculate, for the first time, the exponents describing the decay of the survival probability for all values...

We tackle the question of motion in Quantum Gravity: what does motion mean at the Planck scale? Although we are still far from a complete answer we consider here a toy model in which the problem can be formulated and resolved precisely. The setting of the toy model is three dimensional Euclidean gravity. Before studying the model in detail, we argue that Loop Quantum Gravity may provide a very useful approach when discussing the question of motion in Quantum Gravity.

In a celebrated paper (Tokyo J. Math. 1984) K. Nishihara proved global existence for Kirchhoff equations in a special class of initial data which lies in between analytic functions and Gevrey spaces. This class was defined in terms of Fourier components with weights satisfying suitable convexity and integrability conditions. In this paper we extend this result by removing the convexity constraint, and by replacing Nishihara's integrability condition with the simpler integrability condition...

Does it seem right to you that a state's ability to stay afloat should be the stuff of secretive betting pools? No? Well that's just what's going on. As states like California struggle to pay their bills, traders are gambling, buying credit default swaps, on the fate of our biggest state. And it's worse. The same banks that sell and profit off the swaps, at the same time underwrite and price the state's assets -- their municipal bonds. GRITtv with Laura Flanders brings participatory democracy...

The prediction of damage to a target caused by the ballistic impact of projectiles has long been a goal of military analysts. One of the more widely accepted approaches to this problem is the shotline method. This method involves projecting rays of a specified direction through a target and describing the interactions along each ray. The Fast Shotline Generator (FASTGEN) is computer program that executes the shotline method. The user inputs a geometric description of the desired target and...

We present a simple solution to the little hierarchy problem in the MSSM: a vector-like fourth generation. With O(1) Yukawa couplings for the new quarks, the Higgs mass can naturally be above 114 GeV. Unlike a chiral fourth generation, a vector-like generation can solve the little hierarchy problem while remaining consistent with precision electroweak and direct production constraints, and maintaining the success of the grand unified framework. The new quarks are predicted to lie between ~ 300...

It is known that supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models for the compact Kahler manifolds G/H cannot be consistently coupled to supergravity, since the Kahler potentials are not invariant under the G transformation. We show that the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models can be deformed such that the Kahler potential be exactly G-invariant if and only if one enlarges the manifolds by dropping all the U(1)'s in the unbroken subgroup H. Then, those nonlinear sigma models can be coupled to...
