We investigate electron-positron pair production in pulse-shaped electric background fields using a non-Markovian quantum kinetic equation. We identify a pulse-length range for subcritical fields still in the nonperturbative regime where the number of produced pairs significantly exceeds that of a naive expectation based on the Schwinger formula. From a conceptual viewpoint, we find a remarkable quantitative agreement between the (real-time) quantum kinetic approach and the (imaginary-time)...

We investigate the 1/8 BPS geometries with SU(2) x U(1) x SO(4) x R symmetry in IIB supergravity which were classified by Gava et al, (hep-th/0611065). It is desirable to have a complete set of differential equations imposed on the controlling functions such that they are not only necessary but also sufficient to produce supergravity solutions with those symmetries. We work on this issue and find a new differential equation for the controlling functions. For a special case, we exhaust all the...

The Serpens cloud has received considerable attention in the last years, in particular the small region known as the Serpens cloud core where a plethora of star formation related phenomena are found. This review summarizes our current observational knowledge of the cloud, with emphasis on the core. Recent results are converging to a distance for the cloud of ~ 230 +- 20 pc, an issue which has been controversial over the years. We present the gas and dust properties of the cloud core and...

A method is given to generate the non-linear interaction (collision) of linearly polarized gravity coupled torsion waves in a non-metric theory. Explicit examples are given in which strong mutual focussing of gravitational waves containing impulsive and shock components coupled with torsion waves does not result in a curvature singularity. However, the collision of purely torsion waves displays a curvature singularity in the region of interaction.

Some of the most outstanding questions in the field of gravitation and geometry remain unsolved as a result of our limited understanding of the global structure of the spacetime geometry and the role played by global spacetime diffeomorphism group in quantum gravity. Some insight into these important questions may be gained by looking at certain aspects of general covariance and observables in classical gravitational theory. In this paper I shall define as set of classical geometric observables...

A brief history of the investigation of the Weil-Petersson curvature and a summary of Teichm\"{u}ller theory are provided. A report is presented on the program to describe an intrinsic geometry with the Weil-Petersson metric and geodesic-length functions. Formulas for the metric, covariant derivative and formulas for the curvature tensor are presented. A discussion of methods is included. Recent and new applications are sketched, including results from the work of Liu-Sun-Yau, an...

The growth of Jovian mass planets during migration in their protoplanetary disks is one of the most important problems that needs to be solved in light of observations of the exosolar planets. Studies of the migration of planets in standard gas disk models routinely show that migration is too fast to form Jovian planets, and that such migrating planetary cores generally plunge into the central stars in less than a Myr. In previous work, we have shown that a poorly ionized, less viscous region...

A variety V has Boolean factor congruences (BFC) if the set of factor congruences of every algebra in V is a distributive sublattice of its congruence lattice; this property holds in rings with unit and in every variety which has a semilattice operation. BFC has a prominent role in the study of uniqueness of direct product representations of algebras, since it is a strengthening of the refinement property. We provide an explicit Mal'cev condition for BFC. With the aid of this condition, it is...

The rovibrational electric dipole transitions in the ground electronic state of the HD molecule are studied. A simple, yet rigorous formula is derived for the transition rates in terms of the electric dipole moment function $D(R)$, which is calculated in a wide range of $R$. Our numerical results for transition rates are in moderate agreement with experiments and previous calculations, but are at least an order of magnitude more accurate.

In this paper we introduce an iterative Jacobi algorithm for solving distributed model predictive control (DMPC) problems, with linear coupled dynamics and convex coupled constraints. The algorithm guarantees stability and persistent feasibility, and we provide a localized procedure for constructing an initial feasible solution by constraint tightening. Moreover, we show that the solution of the iterative process converges to the centralized MPC solution. The proposed iterative approach...

We prove a dispersive estimate for the evolution of Schroedinger operators $H = -\Delta + V(x)$ in ${\mathbb R}^3$. The potential is allowed to be a complex-valued function belonging to $L^p(\R^3)\cap L^q(\R^3)$, $p < \frac32 < q$, so that $H$ need not be self-adjoint or even symmetric. Some additional spectral conditions are imposed, namely that no resonances of $H$ exist anywhere within the interval $[0,\infty)$ and that eigenfunctions at zero (including generalized eigenfunctions)...

We have computed alpha^2F's for the hole-doped cuprates within the framework of the one-band Hubbard model, where the full magnetic response of the system is treated properly. The d-wave pairing weight alpha^2F_d is found to contain not only a low energy peak due to excitations near (pi,pi) expected from neutron scattering data, but to also display substantial spectral weight at higher energies due to contributions from other parts of the Brillouin zone as well as pairbreaking ferromagnetic...

It is proposed that $T$ violation in hadronic physics, as well as the masses of $u, d$ quarks, arise from a pseudoscalar interaction with a new spin 0 field $\tau(x)$, odd in $P$ and $T$, but even in $C$. This interaction contains a factor $i\gamma_5$ in the quark Dirac algebra, so that the full Hamiltonian is $P$, $T$ conserving; but by spontaneous symmetry breaking, the new field $\tau(x)$ has a nonzero expectation value $ =\tau_0$ that breaks $P$ and $T$ symmetry. Oscillations of $\tau(x)$...

We study relations of some classes of $k$-convex, $k$-visible bodies in Euclidean spaces. We introduce and study \textrm{circular projections} in normed linear spaces and classes of bodies related with families of such maps, in particular, \textrm{$k$-circular convex} and \textrm{$k$-circular visible} ones. Investigation of these bodies more general than $k$-convex and $k$-visible ones allows us to generalize some classical results of geometric tomography and find their new applications.

Solutions to the Riemann-Hilbert problems with irregular singularities naturally associated to semisimple Frobenius manifold structures on Hurwitz spaces (moduli spaces of meromorphic functions on Riemann surfaces) are constructed. The solutions are given in terms of meromorphic bidifferentials defined on the underlying Riemann surface. The growing consensus that a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) has been observed at the SPS and RHIC experiments suggests a different framework for examining heavy quark dynamics. We present both semi-analytical treatment of Fokker-Planck (FP) evolution in pedagogical examples and numerical Langevin simulations of evolving charm quark-antiquark pairs on top of a hydrodynamically expanding fireball. In this way, we may conclude that the survival probability of bound charmonia states is...

An effective description for spherical nanoparticles in a fluid of point particles is presented. The points inside the nanoparticles and the point particles are assumed to interact via spherically symmetric additive pair potentials, while the distribution of points inside the nanoparticles is taken to be spherically symmetric and smooth. The resulting effective pair interactions between a nanoparticle and a point particle, as well as between two nanoparticles, are then given by spherically...
