Let Phi be the KZ associator and Psi_N be its analogue for N-th roots of 1. We prove a hexagon relation for Psi_4. Similarly to the Broadhurst (for Psi_2) and Okuda (for Psi_4) duality relations, it relies on the "supplementary" (i.e., non-dihedral) symmetries of C^* - mu_4(C) (i.e., the octahedron group S_4). We also derive relations between Phi and Psi_2, which are analogues of equations, found by Nakamura and Schneps, satisfied by the image of the Galois group of Q in the...

This paper presents an overview of some techniques and concepts coming from dynamical system theory and used for the analysis of dynamical neural networks models. In a first section, we describe the dynamics of the neuron, starting from the Hodgkin-Huxley description, which is somehow the canonical description for the ``biological neuron''. We discuss some models reducing the Hodgkin-Huxley model to a two dimensional dynamical system, keeping one of the main feature of the neuron: its...

The retarded Green function of the electromagnetic field in spacetime of a straight thin cosmic string is found. It splits into a geodesic part (corresponding to the propagation along null rays) and to the field scattered on the string. With help of the Green function the electric and magnetic fields of simple sources are constructed. It is shown that these sources are influenced by the cosmic string through a self-interaction with their field. The distant field of static sources is studied and...

The globalization of information has led to increased optimism about the increasing role of global civil society. However, the underdeveloped have been left out of this information explosion. Through development, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) seek to empower the poor so that they have the resources and abilities to join the rest of the world. Unfortunately, these NGOs have problems of their own: issues with accountability to donors and the bottom-up participation of their beneficiaries....

Details of how the primordial plasma recombined and how the universe later reionized are currently somewhat uncertain. This uncertainty can restrict the accuracy of cosmological parameter measurements from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). More positively, future CMB data can be used to constrain the ionization history using observations. We first discuss how current uncertainties in the recombination history impact parameter constraints, and show how suitable parameterizations can be used...

Optical time series photometry of the short period magnetic white dwarf + probable brown dwarf binary SDSS 121209.31+013627.7 reveals pulse-like variability in all bands from i' to u', peaking at u'. These modulations are most likely due to a self-eclipsing accretion hot spot on the white dwarf, rotating into view every 88.43 minutes. This period is commensurate with the radial velocity period determined by Schmidt et al. 2005 of ~90 minutes, and consistent with the rotation period of the...

We discuss the importance for the long-term cluster evolution of the mass loss from intermediate-mass stars (0.8-8 Msun). We present constraints on the mass loss from red giants in clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, a search for the intra-cluster medium in galactic globular clusters, and a simple estimate for the cluster evolution due to red giant mass loss compared to stellar escape.

We consider the excitation dynamics of the two-photon \sts transition in a beam of atomic hydrogen by 243 nm laser radiation. Specifically, we study the impact of ionization damping on the transition line shape, caused by the possibility of ionization of the 2S level by the same laser field. Using a Monte-Carlo simulation, we calculate the line shape of the \sts transition for the experimental geometry used in the two latest absolute frequency measurements (M. We study spectra for a 2D electron in the lowest Landau level with randomly distributed, repulsively correlated electric impurities. The lowest energy band reflects an effective magnetic field downshifted by an integer multiple of the impurity density. The downshift is precisely half that for the corresponding electron density in the composite-fermion picture of the fractional quantum Hall regime.

We provide a library of some 7000 SEDs for starbursts and ultra luminous galaxies (http://www.eso.org/~rsiebenm/sb_models). Its purpose is to quickly obtain estimates of the basic parameters, such as luminosity, size and dust or gas mass and to predict the flux at yet unobserved wavelengths. The procedure is simple and consists of finding an element in the library that matches the observations. The objects may be in the local universe or at high z. We calculate the radiative transfer in...

The aim of this article is to simplify Pfanzagl's proof of consistency for asymptotic maximum likelihood estimators, and to extend it to more general asymptotic M-estimators. The method relies on the existence of a sort of contraction of the parameter space which admits the true parameter as a fixed point. The proofs are short and elementary.

In this paper we study a discrete variational optimal control problem for the rigid body. The cost to be minimized is the external torque applied to move the rigid body from an initial condition to a pre-specified terminal condition. Instead of discretizing the equations of motion, we use the discrete equations obtained from the discrete Lagrange--d'Alembert principle, a process that better approximates the equations of motion. Within the discrete-time setting, these two approaches are not...

All the cases considered here pertaining to inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data. Energy and power are increasingly becoming critical challenges in the design of future computing systems. The SmartPower project at hp labs seeks to address these challenges through holistic solutions, across multiple levels of the system, and optimized for the overall end-user experience. In this talk, I will motivate the power management challenge and present a systematic taxonomy of inefficiencies that lead to overconsumption of power. I will then present results from four major projects...

We investigate N=2, D=5 supersymmetry and matter-coupled supergravity theories in a superconformal context. In a first stage we do not require the existence of a Lagrangian. Under this assumption, we already find at the level of rigid supersymmetry, i.e. before coupling to conformal supergravity, more general matter couplings than have been considered in the literature. For instance, we construct new vector-tensor multiplet couplings, theories with an odd number of tensor multiplets, and...

We review the general properties of target spaces of hypermultiplets, which are quaternionic-like manifolds, and discuss the relations between these manifolds and their symmetry generators. We explicitly construct a one-to-one map between conformal hypercomplex manifolds (i.e. those that have a closed homothetic Killing vector) and quaternionic manifolds of one quaternionic dimension less. An important role is played by '\xi-transformations', relating complex structures on conformal...
