Another album filled with groovy elftunes. Again we can enjoy Happy Elf's analogue synthesizers, drumcomputer, guitars, bassguitars, vocals and samples. O.K. sometimes you believe this album was made in the eighties of last century, but what the heck.... those were (unlike the present) the days of musical voyages of discovery. There's even a song on this album dedicated to the site MySpace.com on which Happy Elf found many friends. The song is called My MySpace . Each track on this album has...

We show that the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves can be flatly degenerated to a projective toric variety. We arrive at this by showing that the Chow quotients of the Grassmannians admit toric degenerations, which in turn, follows from a theorem that we prove for toric degenerations of more general Chow quotients. Along the way, we also argued that GIT quotient of a flat family is again flat. In particular, all GIT quotients of flag varieties by maximal tori can be flatly...

Two simple bounds on the $T_c$ of conventional, phonon-mediated superconductors are derived within the framework of Eliashberg theory in the strong coupling regime. The first bound is set by the total electron-phonon coupling available within a material given the hypothetical ability to arbitrarily dope the material. This bound is studied by deriving a generalization of the McMillan-Hopfield parameter, $\widetilde{\eta}(E)$, which measures the strength of electron-phonon coupling including...

The recent NA48/2 improvement on R_K=Gamma(K->e nu_e)/Gamma(K->mu nu_mu) emphasizes the role of K_l2 decays in probing the mu-e universality. Supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Standard Model can exhibit mu-e non-universal contributions. Their origin is twofold: those deriving from lepton flavor conserving couplings are subdominant with respect to those arising from lepton flavor violating (LFV) sources. We show that mu-e non-universality in K_l2 is quite effective in constraining...

We present strongly stable semi-discrete finite difference approximations to the quarter space problem (x>0, t>0) for the first order in time, second order in space wave equation with a shift term. We consider space-like (pure outflow) and time-like boundaries, with either second or fourth order accuracy. These discrete boundary conditions suggest a general prescription for boundary conditions in finite difference codes approximating first order in time, second order in space hyperbolic...

An overwhelming fraction of photons from relativistic heavy ion collisions has its origin in the decay of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons. We calculate the azimuthal asymmetry of the decay photons for several azimuthally asymmetric pion distributions. We find that the $k_T$ dependence of the elliptic flow parameter$v_2$ for the decay photons closely follows the elliptic flow parameter $v_2^{\pi^0}$ evaluated at $p_T \approx k_T+\delta$, where $\delta\approx$ 0.1 -- 0.2 GeV, for typical pion...

We study the bifurcations and the chaotic behaviour of a periodically forced double-well Duffing oscillator coupled to a single-well Duffing oscillator. Using the amplitude and the frequency of the driving force as control parameters, we show that our model presents phenomena which were not observed in coupled periodically forced Duffing oscillators with identical potentials. In the regime of relatively weak coupling, bubbles of bifurcations and chains of symmetry-breaking are identified. For...

Recent experiments on strongly correlated bilayer quantum Hall systems strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the quantum Hall or in the compressibles states that occur at filling factor $\nu =1.$ These experiments imply that the quasiparticles at $\nu =1$ could have both spin and pseudospin textures i.e. they could be CP$^{3}$ skyrmions. Using a microscopic unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we...

We present a finite temperature ($T$) study of the t-J model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice for the negative hopping $t$, as relevant for the electron-doped Na$_x$CoO$_2$ (NCO). To understand several aspects of this system, we study the $T$-dependent chemical potential, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and the dynamic Hall-coefficient across the entire doping range. We show systematically, how this simplest model for strongly correlated electrons describes a crossover as...

We construct noncompact solutions to the affine normal flow of hypersurfaces, and show that all ancient solutions must be either ellipsoids (shrinking solitons) or paraboloids (translating solitons). We also provide a new proof of the existence of a hyperbolic affine sphere asymptotic to the boundary of a convex cone containing no lines, which is originally due to Cheng-Yau. The main techniques are local second-derivative estimates for a parabolic Monge-Ampere equation modeled on those of Ben...

We propose a method for treating the Dirichlet boundary conditions in the framework of the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM). We are especially interested in boundary data with low regularity (possibly a distribution). We use approximate Dirichlet boundary conditions as in [11] and polynomial approximations of the boundary. Our sequence of GFEMspaces considered, S , = 1, 2, . . . is such that S not subset H1(sub 0) (omega), and hence it does not conform to one of the basic FEM...

According to the Administration's National Security Strategy document released on March 16, 2006, the United States may face no greater challenge from a single country than Iran. That perception might have intensified in the context of Iran ally Lebanese Hizballah's military challenge to Israel in July 2006. To date, the Bush Administration has pursued several avenues to attempt to contain the potential threat posed by Iran, including supporting a long-term policy of changing Iran's regime....

In this paper we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set D_n of points on divergent trajectories of the homogeneous flow induced by a certain one-parameter subgroup of G=SL(2,R) acting by left multiplication on the product space G^n/Gamma^n, where Gamma=SL(2,Z). We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of D_n equals 3n-(1/2) for any n greater than one.

Most of the physics analyses at a hadron collider rely on a precise measurement of the energy of jets in the final state. This requires a precise in situ calibration of the calorimeter with the final detector setup. We present the basic procedure and results of the in situ gain calibration of the D0 HCAL in Run II. The gain calibration works on top of the pulser-based calibration of the readout electronics and is based entirely on collision data.

The optical impacts of a scattering benthic boundary layer are fairly obvious to in situ and remote sensing techniques that measure ocean color. These scattering layers cause an increase in light reflectance from positions above the benthos, a reduction in the penetrating photons to the bottom, and a decrease in photons scattered from the bottom back toward the surface. The net result is that these layers reduce the ability of active and passive optical instruments to retrieve estimates of...

Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the Gaussian pseudo-maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters in a wide class of ARCH$(\infty)$ processes are established. The conditions are shown to hold in case of exponential and hyperbolic decay in the ARCH weights, though in the latter case a faster decay rate is required for the central limit theorem than for the law of large numbers. Particular parameterizations are discussed.

We argue that off-shell dualities between d=1 supermultiplets with different sets of physical bosonic components and the same number of fermionic ones are related to gauging some symmetries in the actions of the supermultiplets with maximal sets of physical bosons. Our gauging procedure uses off-shell superfields and so is manifestly supersymmetric. We focus on N=4 supersymmetric mechanics and show that various actions of the multiplet (3,4,1) amount to some gauge choices in the gauged...

When we think about Earth's sources of oxygen, we usually think of vast forests such as the Amazon, but about half of the oxygen we breathe comes from elsewhere; it's produced by phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are tiny, single-celled plants that live in the ocean, and they serve as the base of the oceanic food chain. Yet as important as phytoplankton are to life on Earth, their interaction with our planet has only recently been studied on a global scale. The satellite sensor that has pioneered...

The multidimensional braneworld gravity model by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati was primarily put forth to explain the observed acceleration of the expansion of the Universe without resorting to dark energy. One of the most intriguing features of such a model is that it also predicts small effects on the orbital motion of test particles which could be tested in such a way that local measurements at Solar System scales would allow to get information on the global properties of the Universe.
