An analysis of the action of the Hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity on the Kauffman bracket and Jones knot polynomials is proposed. It is explicitely shown that the Kauffman bracket is a formal solution of the Hamiltonian constraint with cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) to third order in $\Lambda$. The calculation is performed in the extended loop representation of quantum gravity. The analysis makes use of the analytical expressions of the knot invariants in terms of the two and three...

We examine two processes, the neutrino production process e^+e^- ---> N\nu and the inverse neutrinoless double-beta decay process e^-e^- --->W^-W^- as possible places for discovering heavy neutrinos in future lepton linear colliders. The heavy neutrino parameters are bound from existing experimental data. We use only one important theoretical input, the lack of a Higgs triplet. As a consequence the neutrinos must have different CP parities. In such models the existing experimental bounds...

We show that the kinematic reconstruction of the $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+W^-\rightarrow jj\tau^-\overline{\nu}_\tau$\ events have a one-parameter ambiguity when reconstructed from the momentum of all measured $W^-$\ decay products. We propose a {\em hybrid} method of reconstruction of the $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+W^-\rightarrow jj\tau^-\overline{\nu}_\tau$\ events. This is based on the observation that the difference between the $\tau^-$\ production angles and the production angles of the sum of its...

In this paper we briefly review a model that describes the diffusion-controlled aggregation exhibited by particles as they are deposited on a surface. This model allows to understand many experiments of thin film deposition. In the first part, we describe the model, which incorporates deposition, particle and cluster diffusion, and aggregation. In a second part, we study the dynamical evolution of the model. Finally, we analyze the effects of small cluster mobility, and we show that the...

We carefully analyze the N=2 dual pair of string theories in four dimensions introduced by Ferrara, Harvey, Strominger and Vafa. The analysis shows that a second discrete degree of freedom must be switched on in addition to the known `Wilson line' to achieve a non-perturbatively consistent theory. We also identify the phase transition this model undergoes into another dual pair via a process analogous to a conifold transition. This provides the first known example of a phase transition which is...

Droplet collision is of relevance to spray combustion, intimately influencing the spray characteristics in the dense spray region. The present study aims to gain fundamental understanding on the mechanisms governing the observed phenomena of permanent coalescence, bouncing, and separation upon droplet collision. Specific issues of interest include the extent of droplet deformation, the dynamics of the inter-droplet flow, the relative importance of the gas resistance force as compared to the...

We have built a prototype vibration isolation platform using permanent magnets that demonstrates that our concept of vibration isolation via decoupling is basically sound. Stabilized with elastomers, this vibration isolation device is capable of reducing mechanical vibrations reaching instrumentation attached to the platform by 50 db for frequencies above 5hz. Replacing elastomers with high temperature superconductors is expected to suppress the amplified response at the resonance frequencies...

We study the spontaneous de-excitation and excitation of accelerated atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories (``generalized Unruh effect''). We consider the effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction separately. We show that radiation reaction is generally not altered by stationary acceleration, whereas the contribution of vacuum fluctuations differs for all stationary accelerated trajectories from its inertial value. Spontaneous excitation from the ground state occurs for all {...

We discuss, in the context of $N=1$ hidden sector non-minimal supergravity chaotic inflationary models, constraints on the parameters of a polynomial superpotential resulting from existing bounds on the reheating temperature and on the amplitude of the primordial energy density fluctuations as inferred from COBE. We present a specific two-parameter chaotic inflationary model which satisfies these constraints and discuss a possible scenario for adequate baryon asymmetry generation.

Coronae on Venus are believed to result from the gravitationally driven relaxation of topography that was originally raised by mantle diapirs. We examine this relaxation using a viscoelastic finite element code, and show that an initially plateau shaped load will evolve to the characteristic corona topography of central raised bowl, annular rim, and surrounding moat. Stresses induced by the relaxation are consistent with the development of concentric extensional fracturing common on the outer...

The correlation dimension and limit capacity serve theoretically as lower and upper bounds, respectively, of the fractal dimension of attractors of dynamic systems. In this paper, we show that estimates of the correlation dimension grow rapidly with increasing noise level in the time-series, while estimates of the limit capacity remain relatively unaffected. It is therefore proposed that the limit capacity be used in studies of noisy data, despite its heavier computational requirements. An...

The influence of individual differences in working memory span (WMS) on comprehension of instructional text was examined. Results showed that readers across the range of WMS paid special attention to thematic statements when they read instructional texts. This was shown through longer reading times of sentences in the initial position of paragraphs. However, if comprehension of specific details was stressed by asking about details after each passage, then high WMS readers increased thematic...

We continue our study of Yoshida's lifting, which associates to a pair of automorphic forms on the adelic multiplicative group of a quaternion algebra a Siegel modular form of degree 2. We consider here the case that the automorphic forms on the quaternion algebra correspond to modular forms of arbitrary even weights and square free levels; in particular we obtain a construction of Siegel modular forms of weight 3 attached to a pair of elliptic modular forms of weights 2 and 4.

We derive, for $N\is2$ super-Yang--Mills with gauge group $SU(2)$ and massless matter, the supersymmetric quantum mechanical models describing the time evolution of multi-monopole configurations in the low energy approximation. This is a first step towards identifying the solitonic states mapped to fundamental excitations by duality in the model with four hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation.

We have made a detailed and quantitative study of dilepton production via bremsstrahlung of a virtual photon during pion-pion collisions. Most calculations of electromagnetic radiation from strong interaction processes rely on the soft photon approximation (SPA). The conditions underlying this approximation are generally violated when dilepton spectra are calculated in terms of their invariant mass, so that an approach going beyond the SPA becomes necessary. Superseding previous derivations, we...

We investigate a population of primordial binaries during the initial stage of evolution of a star cluster. For our calculations we assume that equal mass stars form rapidly in a tidally truncated gas cloud, that $\sim10$\% of the stars are in binaries and that the resulting star cluster undergoes an epoch of violent relaxation. We study the collisional interaction of the binaries and single stars, in particular, the ionization of the binaries and the energy exchange between binaries and single...

The sharp, nonoverlapping Raman bands for plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine would be advantageous for on-surface, active mineralogical analysis of lunar materials. A robust, light-weight, low-power, rover-based Raman spectrometer with a laser exciting source, entirely transmission-mode holographic optics, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector could fit within a less than 20 cm cube. This dissertation is a study of Sir Frederick H. Sykes, first Chief of the Air Staff of the Royal Air Force. It argues that historians have overlooked and misinterpreted Sykes and, therefore, have left a gap in the story of British flying during the First World War. Contrary to historiography, Sykes was not a secretive intriguer and not a tangential subject in RAF history. This dissertation describes Sykes's fundamental part in organizing and leading British aviation from 1912 to 1919--his...

We present high--spatial resolution studies of the density field as predicted by Lagrangian perturbation approximations up to the third order. The first--order approximation is equivalent to the ``Zel'dovich approximation'' for the type of initial data analyzed. The study is performed for two simple models which allow studying of typical features of the clustering process in the early non--linear regime. We calculate the initial perturbation potentials as solutions of Poisson equations...

We study the solution to the Polonyi problem in the framework of no-scale type supergravity. In such a model, Polonyi field can weigh as $O(10{\rm TeV})$ and decay just before the big-bang nucleosynthesis. It is shown that in spite of a large entropy production by the decay of the Polonyi field, one can naturally explain the present value of the baryon-to-entropy ratio, $n_B/s \sim (10^{-10}-10^{-11})$ if the Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis works. It is pointed out, however, that there...

Recent work on the equilibrium and stability of ellipsoidal stellar systems is reviewed. The absence of constant-density cores in early-type galaxies implies that chaos and high-order resonances are generic features of the motion in triaxial stellar systems. Bending instabilities are now well understood and may provide the answers to a number of long-standing riddles, including the absence of highly flattened elliptical galaxies and the formation of galactic bulges. Some preliminary results on...
