Among teachers and parents who avoid punishing children, many turn instead to the use of rewards. However, as with punishment, the offer of rewards can elicit temporary compliance but is no more effective at helping children become responsible people or self-directed learners. Extrinsic motivators, such as rewards, do not alter commitments that underlie behavior. Nor are rewards helpful at enhancing achievement. At least two dozen studies have shown that people expecting a reward for completing...

This qualitative study examined the perceptions that university library faculty members hold regarding the role of the department head in promoting faculty growth and development. Four faculty members at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were interviewed. Axial coding of the individuals' perceptions revealed six categories of perceived roles for library department heads: advocate, communicator, counselor, leader, manager, and motivator. These categories identify strategies that department...

Portfolio assessment is increasingly used in teacher education courses as teacher educators become aware of the importance of modeling best practice in methods classes. However, implementing portfolio instruction is not an easy task. Because this approach to evaluation is so different from previous educational experiences, preservice students typically struggle with defining how they can create portfolios representative of their learning. A collaborative study, conducted by two professors who...

Two important schools of thought in the teaching of writing are those of the "writing workshop" and "critical pedagogy." Both encourage expression on the part of the student, but while writing workshop advocates assume that the student writes from a stable, unitary, autonomous self, the critical pedagogy advocates do not. Writing workshop advocates see the teacher as a facilitator of the student's expression; though he or she may intervene, strategically, in the technique of...

Many acceleration-sensitive, microgravity science experiments will require active vibration isolation from manned orbiters on which they will be mounted. The isolation problem, especially in the case of a tethered payload, is a complex three-dimensional one that is best suited to modern-control design methods. In this paper, extended H(sub 2) synthesis is used to design an active isolator (i.e., controller) for a realistic single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) microgravity vibration isolation...

High-speed aerospace vehicles which employ high strength, light weight, yet deformable materials may exhibit significant interaction between the rigid-body and vibrational dynamics. Preliminary High-Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) configurations are a prime example. Traditionally, separate control systems have been used to augment the rigid-body and vibrational dynamics. In the HSCT arena, the highly coupled motions may not allow this design freedom. The research activity addresses two specific...

Ferroelectric thin films of barium strontium titanate (BSTO) have been deposited on bare and metallized substrates by the pulsed laser ablation method under different oxygen ambients (150 mT and 50 mT). Under an oxygen pressure of 150 mT, the film composition was similar to that of its ablation target composition, viz. Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO3. However, when the films were deposited under the lower oxygen pressure, x-ray diffraction studies showed the presence of a secondary phase. The electrical...

General braided counterparts of classical Clifford algebras are introduced and investigated. Braided Clifford algebras are defined as Chevalley-Kahler deformations of the corresponding braided exterior algebras. Analogs of the spinor representations are studied, generalizing classical Cartan's approach. It is shown that, under certain assumptions concerning the braiding, the spinor representation is faithful and irreducible, as in the classical theory.

We present lattice estimates of the mass of the heavy-light baryons $\Lambda_b$ and $\Xi_b$ obtained using propagating heavy quarks. For $\Lambda_b$ our result is $M_{\Lambda_b}=5.728 \pm 0.144 \pm 0.018$ GeV, after extrapolation to the continuum limit and in the quenched approximation.

Using the linear sigma model to describe quark--pion interactions, we compute polarization asymmetries in quark fragmentation. We show that the effects of transverse quark polarizations appear in the correlation between the two leading pions in a jet produced by the fragmentation of a quark. Such asymmetries provide a window to the nature of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

We have observed with ROSAT six blazars from the sample of 31 polarized objects constructed by Impey and Tapia (1988). Results of the spectral analysis in the ROSAT band of three objects, PKS 0301-243, PKS 1055+018 and PG 1424+240 are presented here and compared with the three previously published objects. Using a simple power law model with free absorption a wide range of spectral slopes is found. Objects with emission lines have flatter X-ray spectra than lineless objects. Indication of...

There is continued interest in the possibility that big bang nucleosynthesis may produce significant quantities of Be and B. In this paper we reevaluate the primordial abundances taking into account uncertainties in reactions rates. We discuss the implications for primordial nucleosynthesis, and for galactic cosmic ray spallation.

An investigation is made of disk accretion of matter onto a rotating star with an aligned dipole magnetic field. A new aspect of this work is that when the angular velocity of the star and disk differ substantially we argue that the $\bf B$ field linking the star and disk rapidly inflates to give regions of open field lines extending from the polar caps of the star and from the disk. The open field line region of the disk leads to the possibility of magnetically driven outflows. An analysis is...

The apparent cosmological conflict between the age of the Universe, predicted in the standard Friedman cosmology by using the recent measurement of the larger Hubble constant from a direct calibration of the distance to the Virgo galaxy cluster, and the ages of the oldest stars and globular clusters is resolved by invoking the scale dependence of cosmological quantities, including the age of the Universe. The distance dependence or the running of cosmological quantities is motivated by the...

We review the Standard Model in a form conducive to formulating its possible short distance extensions. This depends on the value of the Higgs mass, the only unknown parameter of the model. We suggest methods to reproduce many of the small numbers in the model in terms of scale ratios, applying see-saw like ideas to the breaking of chiral symmetries. We then investigate how the $N=1$ Standard Model extrapolated to or near the Planck scale can fit superstring models, emphasizing the use of some...

We describe efficient methods for screening clone libraries, based on pooling schemes which we call ``random $k$-sets designs''. In these designs, the pools in which any clone occurs are equally likely to be any possible selection of $k$ from the $v$ pools. The values of $k$ and $v$ can be chosen to optimize desirable properties. Random $k$-sets designs have substantial advantages over alternative pooling schemes: they are efficient, flexible, easy to specify, require fewer pools, and have...
