The vector Burgers equation is extended to include pressure gradients and gravity. It is shown that within the framework of the Cole-Hopf transformation there are no physical solutions to this problem. This result is important because it clearly demonstrates that any extension of Burgers equation to more interesting physical situations is strongly limited.

In this letter we develop a method to construct all the integrals of motion of the $SU(p)$ Haldane-Shastry model of spins, equally spaced around a circle, interacting through a $1/r^2$ exchange interaction. These integrals of motion respect the Yangian symmetry algebra of the Hamiltonian.

There is an obvious need for automated classification of galaxies, as the number of observed galaxies increases very fast. We examine several approaches to this problem, utilising {\em Artificial Neural Networks} (ANNs). We quote results from a recent study which show that ANNs can classsify galaxies morphologically as well as humans can.

We have developed an automatic abstract generation system for Japanese expository writings based on rhetorical structure extraction. The system first extracts the rhetorical structure, the compound of the rhetorical relations between sentences, and then cuts out less important parts in the extracted structure to generate an abstract of the desired length. Evaluation of the generated abstract showed that it contains at maximum 74\% of the most important sentences of the original text. The system...

This article is based on the adaptive mesh refinement calculation methods developed by M.J.Berger and J.Oliger. It opts for the use of the concept of numerous units formed into a grid, used in solving hyperbolic type equation sets. It combines finite difference forms, opts for the use of Richardson extrapolation techniques to automatically carry out local truncation error estimates, and, for regions with low accuracy, produces new fine mesh local refinements or eliminates old fine mesh...

We investigate the possibility of probing the triplet Higgs boson sector via single charged Higgs production in the process $e^+ e^- \to H^+ l \nu_l$, at high energy electron-positron colliders, using the tree level $H^+W^-Z$ coupling which is a unique feature of such models. We find that even LEP-200 can give nontrivial information upto $M_{H^{\pm}} \simeq 120 $ GeV if the doublet -triplet mixing is not restricted by the current value of the $\rho$ parameter which is the case in models with a...

We consider possible mixing of electromagnetic and gravitational shock waves, in the Planckian energy scattering of point particles in Minkowski space. By boosting a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole solution to the velocity of light, it is shown that no mixing of shock waves takes place for arbitrary finite charge carried by the black hole. However, a similar boosting procedure for a charged black hole solution in dilaton gravity yields some mixing : the wave function of even a neutral test...

We consider two-dimensional Fermi liquids in the vicinity of a quantum transition to a phase with commensurate, antiferromagnetic long-range order. Depending upon the Fermi surface topology, mean-field spin-density-wave theory predicts two different types of such transitions, with mean-field dynamic critical exponents $z=1$ (when the Fermi surface does not cross the magnetic zone boundary, type $A$) and $z=2$ (when the Fermi surface crosses the magnetic zone boundary, type $B$). The type $A$...

Current matrix elements and observables for electro- and photo-excitation of baryons from the nucleon are studied in a light-front framework. Relativistic effects are estimated by comparison to a nonrelativistic model, where we use simple basis states to represent the baryon wavefunctions. Sizeable relativistic effects are found for certain transitions, for example, to radial excitations such as that conventionally used to describe to the Roper resonance. A systematic study shows that the...

The Pacer is the student newspaper at the University of Tennessee at Martin. It is a continuation of the first student newspaper, The Volette , at the then-named University of Tennessee Junior College. The newspaper changed its name in the fall of 1971. It is produced periodically (weekly, bi-weekly and monthly depending on the year) throughout the academic year. Issues from the fall of 1971 to the spring 1985 have been digitized from microfilm at the Tennessee State Library and Archives...

This work improves Denton's finite volume time marching methods. It takes this type of method, in which there is 1st order accuracy in time and 2d order accuracy in space, and improves it to be a calculation method in which there is 2d degree accuracy in time and 2d degree accuracy in space. In conjunction with this, application is made to numerical simulations of inlet flow fields associated with the interior flows of S type inlets as well as exterior flows which inlets possess. Calculations...

DATR is a declarative representation language for lexical information and as such, in principle, neutral with respect to particular processing strategies. Previous DATR compiler/interpreter systems support only one access strategy that closely resembles the set of inference rules of the procedural semantics of DATR (Evans & Gazdar 1989a). In this paper we present an alternative access strategy (reverse query strategy) for a non-trivial subset of DATR.

We consider properties of the structure functions of inclusive heavy meson decays $B\to X_c$ and treat the $c$ quark mass as a free parameter. We show that in two extreme cases of heavy and light $c$ quark the structure functions of heavy--heavy and heavy--light transitions are given by a Fourier transform of the matrix elements of Wilson lines containing a time--like and a light--like segment, correspondingly. Using the renormalization properties of Wilson lines we find the dependence of the...

We study a Centauro-type phenomenon in high-energy heavy-ion collisions by assuming that pions are produced semiclassically both directly and in pairs through the isovector channel. The leading-particle effect and the factorization property of the scattering amplitude in the impact-parameter space are used to define the classical pion field. By analyzing the joint probability function $P_{II_{3}}(n_{0},n_{\_})$ for producing $n_{0}$ neutral and $n_{-}$ negative pions from a definite isospin...

Introduction. The Department of Defense Intelligence Information System (DoDIIS) is designed as a globally distributed network of independent but interoperating intelligence information and special processing systems. It is shown that the low energy spectrum of mesoscopic superconductors coupled by Josephson interaction can be probed by two-electron tunneling from a normal electrode. The Andreev reflection in the NS junction of a normal-superconductor-superconductor double junction (NSS transistor) provides a unique spectroscopic tool to probe the coherent Cooper pair tunneling and the energy spectrum of the Josephson (SS) junction. The ground state properties are reflected in a resonant structure of the...

A basic introduction to the physics of the Standard Model Higgs boson is given. We discuss Higgs boson production in $e^+e^-$ and hadronic collisions and survey search techniques at future accelerators. The Higgs bosons of the minimal SUSY model are briefly considered. Indirect limits from triviality arguments, vacuum stability and precision measurements at LEP are also presented.

We show that seeds for quasar black holes could have originated from the initial cosmological collapse of overdense regions with unusually small rotation. The gas in these rare regions collapses into a compact disk that shrinks on a short viscous time scale. Using an analytical model, we calculate the low-spin tail of the probability distribution of angular momenta for objects that collapse out of a Gaussian random field of initial density perturbations. The population of low-spin systems is...
