LibriVox recording of Jacob's Ladder by E. Phillips Oppenheim. Read in English by Richard Kilmer This is a story about Jacob Pratt who “stood bond” for his brother and then lost all his money and was unable to pay his debts. Two years later his brother is finally able to restore him to an enviable financial position. Jacob rewards those who stood beside him during his time of trials and attempts to get even with those who had cast him aside. He finds that revenge is not always sweet. Even...

Evelyn Bowden talks about her E-Book titled Education:Only a Few Get It which gives her perspective of Public Education after over 15 years of active advocacy for the rights of children to get the best available education. She has witnessed first hand actions of School Boards, Superintendents, Principal and Classroom Teachers that are detrimental the education of children and youth. Ms. Bowden has also witnessed parents and commuities become willing participants to this process.

Modified gravity theories on cosmic scales have three key deviations from general relativity. They can cause cosmic acceleration without a physical, highly negative pressure fluid, can cause a gravitational slip between the two metric potentials, and can cause gravitational waves to propagate differently, e.g. with a speed different from the speed of light. We examine whether the deviations in the metric potentials as observable through modified Poisson equations for scalar density...

We present 3-50 keV NuSTAR observations of the AGN Mrk 335 in a very low flux state. The spectrum is dominated by very strong features at the energies of the iron line at 5-7 keV and Compton hump from 10-30 keV. The source is variable during the observation, with the variability concentrated at low energies, which suggesting either a relativistic reflection or a variable absorption scenario. In this work we focus on the reflection interpretation, making use of new relativistic reflection models...

There are a large number of physics programs one can explore in electron-nucleus collisions at a future electron-ion collider. Collision geometry is very important in these studies, while the measurement for an event-by-event geometric control is rarely discussed in the prior deep inelastic scattering experiments off a nucleus. This paper seeks to provide some detailed studies on the potential of tagging collision geometries through forward neutron multiplicity measurements with a zero degree...

Let $G$ be a finite group, let $\pi(G)$ be the set of prime divisors of $|G|$ and let $\Gamma(G)$ be the prime graph of $G$. This graph has vertex set $\pi(G)$, and two vertices $r$ and $s$ are adjacent if and only if $G$ contains an element of order $rs$. Many properties of these graphs have been studied in recent years, with a particular focus on the prime graphs of finite simple groups. In this note, we determine the pairs $(G,H)$, where $G$ is simple and $H$ is a proper subgroup of $G$ such...

We derive the nonextensive thermodynamics of an ideal quantum gas composed by bosons and/or fermions with finite chemical potentials. We find agreement with previous works when $\mu \le m$, and some inconsistencies are corrected for fermions when $\mu > m$. This formalism is then used to study the thermodynamical properties of hadronic systems based on a Hadron Resonance Gas approach. We apply this result to study the protoneutron star stability under several conditions.

Inflation models make specific predictions for a tensor-scalar-scalar three-point correlation, or bispectrum, between one gravitational-wave (tensor) mode and two density-perturbation (scalar) modes. This tensor-scalar-scalar correlation leads to a local power quadrupole, an apparent departure from statistical isotropy in our Universe, as well as characteristic four-point correlations in the current mass distribution in the Universe. So far, the predictions for these observables have been...

A periodic two-phase algebro-geometric solution of the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation is constructed in terms of elliptic Jacobi theta-functions. A dependence of this solution on the parameters of a spectral curve is investigated. An existence of a real smooth finite-gap solution of NLS equation with complex initial phase is proven. Degenerations of the constructed solution to one-phase traveling wave solution and solutions in the form of the plane waves are carried.

We study consequences of long-range elasticity in thermally assisted dynamics of yield stress materials. Within a two-dimensinal mesoscopic model we calculate the mean-square displacement and the dynamical structure factor for tracer particle trajectories. The ballistic regime at short time scales is associated with a compressed exponential decay in the dynamical structure factor, followed by a subdiffusive crossover prior to the onset of diffusion. We relate this crossover to spatiotemporal...

We consider a one-dimensional space-inhomogeneous discrete time quantum walk. This model is the Hadamard walk with one defect at the origin which is different from the model introduced by Wojcik et al. [14]. We obtain a stationary measure of the model by solving the eigenvalue problem and an asymptotic behaviour of the return probability by the path counting approach. Moreover, we get the time-averaged limit measure using the space-time generating function method. The measure is symmetric for...

Emission of muonium ($\mu^+e^-$) atoms from a laser-processed aerogel surface into vacuum was studied for the first time. Laser ablation was used to create hole-like regions with diameter of about 270$~\mu$m in a triangular pattern with hole separation in the range of 300--500$~\mu$m. The emission probability for the laser-processed aerogel sample is at least eight times higher than for a uniform one.

The most striking feature of the Cosmic Star Formation History (CSFH) of the Universe is a dramatic drop of the star formation (SF) activity, since z~1. In this work we investigate if the very same process of assembly and growth of structures is one of the major drivers of the observed decline. We study the contribution to the CSFH of galaxies in halos of different masses. This is done by studying the total SFR-halo mass-redshift plane from redshift 0 to redshift z~1.6 in a sample of 57 groups...

The FEAST method for solving large sparse eigenproblems is equivalent to subspace iteration with an approximate spectral projector and implicit orthogonalization. This relation allows to characterize the convergence of this method in terms of the error of a certain rational approximant to an indicator function. We propose improved rational approximants leading to FEAST variants with faster convergence, in particular, when using rational approximants based on the work of Zolotarev. Numerical...
