This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: The health and educational systems in Greenland and Nunavut are reflections of those in Denmark and Southern Canada, with the language of instruction and practise being Danish and English. This places specific demands on Inuit studying nursing. Objective: This paper discusses the experiences of Inuit who are educated in nursing programmes and practise in healthcare systems located in the Arctic...

This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: Smoking-related illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and lung cancer, are common in Greenland. Factors such as age, gender, cigarette use, restricted smoking at home and socio-economic determinants are well-known predictors for smoking and smoking cessation. In 2005, 66% of the adult population in were Greenland smokers, despite widespread smoking...

This article is from Frontiers in Neuroscience , volume 7 . Abstract Recent studies have shown that endogenous serotonin is not required for colonic peristalsis in vitro, nor gastrointestinal (GI) transit in vivo. However, antagonists of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors can inhibit peristalsis and GI-transit in mammals, including humans. This raises the question of how these antagonists inhibit GI-motility and transit, if depletion of endogenous 5-HT does not cause any significant...

This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 41 . Abstract Progesterone receptors (PR) are transcription factors relevant to breast cancer biology. Herein, we describe an N-terminal common docking (CD) domain in PR-B, a motif first described in mitogen-activated protein kinases. Binding studies revealed PR-B interacts with dual-specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) via the CD domain. Mutation of the PR-B CD domain (mCD) attenuated cell cycle progression and expression of PR-B target genes...

This article is from International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , volume 10 . Abstract The effect of the built environment on diet (and ensuing health outcomes) is less understood than the effect of diet on obesity. Natural experiments are increasingly advocated in place of cross-sectional studies unable to suggest causality. The central research question of this paper, therefore, asks whether a neighborhood-level food retail intervention will affect dietary habits or...

This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 13 . Abstract We present a phenomenological model for the photocurrent transient relaxation observed in ZnO-based metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) planar photodetector devices based on time-resolved surface band bending. Surface band bending decreases during illumination, due to migration of photogenerated holes to the surface. Immediately after turning off illumination, conduction-band electrons must overcome a relatively low energy...

This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 13 . Abstract A strain-based load identification model for beam structures subjected to multiple loads is presented. The number of sensors for the load identification model is the same as the number of load conditions acting on a beam structure. In the model, the contribution of each load to the strains measured by strain sensors is defined. In this paper, the longitudinal strains measured from multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG)...

This article is from Frontiers in Plant Science , volume 4 . Abstract Phototrophic eukaryotes are among the most successful organisms on Earth due to their unparalleled efficiency at capturing light energy and fixing carbon dioxide to produce organic molecules. A conserved and efficient network of light-dependent regulatory modules could be at the bases of this success. This regulatory system conferred early advantages to phototrophic eukaryotes that allowed for specialization, complex...

Throughout the paper we treat vector of orthogonal polynomials ${p_{j}(x))}_{j=0}^{n}$ as a linear transformation of the vector ${x^{j}}_{j=0}^{n}$ by some lower triangular $% (n+1)\times (n+1)$ matrix $\mathbf{\Pi}_{n}.$ Using Cholesky decomposition of the moment matrix of measure $\alpha $ with infinite support we give interpretation of the matrix $\mathbf{\Pi}_{n}.$ Using this approach we are able to prove quickly some known and formulate some new properties of the system of orthogonal...

Patients with cancer and febrile neutropenia (FN) present a higher risk of sepsis complications, such as septic shock. Nonetheless, these patients are normally excluded or under-represented in sepsis biomarker studies. The aim...

The striking morphological characters of the species – palpus very long, about as long as prementum; upper calypter truncate and very short and setae of male sternite 5 bifurcated, confirm that this new species is also a new genus in the tribe Coenosiini. Male and female terminalia were dissected and illustrated.

The product of M complex random Gaussian matrices of size N has recently been studied by Akemann, Kieburg and Wei. They showed that, for fixed M and N, the joint probability distribution for the squared singular values of the product matrix forms a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel determined by certain biorthogonal polynomials that can be explicitly constructed. We find that, in the case M=2, the relevant biorthogonal polynomials are actually special cases of multiple...

This article is from Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , volume 89 . Abstract Alopecia areata is a non-scarring form of alopecia that can be localized or widespread. Its etiology is unknown, but immunological factors are implicated in its pathogenesis. With the more frequent use of anti TNFα biologic drugs, some alopecia areata cases during their use have been described. We report a case of universal alopecia in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis while using adalimumab and leflunomide.

This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is an act with a non-fatal outcome in which an individual initiates a behavior, such as self-cutting or burning, with the intention of inflicting harm on his or her self. Interpersonal difficulties have been shown to be a risk factor for DSH, but the association between subjective experience of loneliness and DSH have rarely been examined. Objective: To examine the...

This article is from Development (Cambridge, England) , volume 140 . Abstract During mouse pre-implantation development, extra-embryonic primitive endoderm (PrE) and pluripotent epiblast precursors are specified in the inner cell mass (ICM) of the early blastocyst in a ‘salt and pepper’ manner, and are subsequently sorted into two distinct layers. Positional cues provided by the blastocyst cavity are thought to be instrumental for cell sorting; however, the sequence of events and the...

Axial-vector mesons $a_1(1260)$, $f_1(1285)$, $h_1(1170)$, $K_1(1270)$, and $K_1(1400)$ can be produced in semileptonic $\tau\to A P \nu_{\tau}$ decays, where $P$ stands for the pseudoscalar mesons $\pi$ or $K$. We calculate the branching ratios based in a meson dominance model. The exclusive channels $\tau^-\to a_1(1260)^-\pi^0\nu$, $\tau^-\to a_1(1260)^0\pi^-\nu$, and $\tau^-\to h_1(1170)\pi^-\nu$ turn out to be of order ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$, the channel $\tau^-\to f_1(1285)\pi^-\nu$ of order...
