This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: Many nations routinely include health impact assessments (HIA) in public policy decisions. Institutionalization of HIA formally integrates health considerations into a governmental decision-making process. We describe an example of institutionalization in the United States through Alaska's early experience with institutionalization of HIA. Literature review: HIA arose from a series of health...

This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: Inuit infants who reside in the Nunavut (NU) regions of Arctic Canada have extremely high rates of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) associated with significant health expenditures, but the costs in other regions of Arctic Canada have not been documented. Objective: This prospective surveillance compares, across most of Arctic Canada, the rates and costs associated with LRTI admissions...

This article is from Oncology Letters , volume 6 . Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of WW-domain oxidoreductase (WWOX), fragile histidine triad (FHIT) and p73 in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Samples from 122 ALL patients and 35 non-ALL control patients were collected in this study. RT-PCR was performed to detect the mRNA expression of WWOX, FHIT and p73. The methylation status of the WWOX promoter region, FHIT promoter region and the first exon region...

This article is from Retrovirology , volume 10 . Abstract Background: Viral protein R (Vpr), a protein of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) with various biological functions, was shown to be present in the blood of HIV-1-positive patients. However, it remained unclear whether circulating Vpr in patients’ blood is biologically active. Here, we examined the activity of blood Vpr using an assay system by which retrotransposition of long interspersed element-1 (L1-RTP) was detected. We...

We calculate the annihilation decay widths of spin-singlet heavy quarkonia $h_c, h_b$ and $\eta_b$} into light hadrons with both QCD and relativistic corrections at order $O(\alpha_{s}v^{2})$ in nonrelativistic QCD. With appropriate estimates for the long-distance matrix elements by using the potential model and operator evolution method, we find that our predictions of these decay widths are consistent with recent experimental measurements. We also find that the $O(\alpha_{s}v^{2})$...

We introduce an efficient Langevin method to study bilinear Fermionic Hamiltonians interacting with classical fields. Our method is suitable for very large systems and offers high accuracy. To demonstrate the method, we study complex non-coplanar chiral spin textures on the triangular Kondo lattice model. We also explore non-equilibrium mesoscale physics such as chiral domain coarsening and Z2 vortex annihilation.

This article is from Molecular Medicine Reports , volume 8 . Abstract Mutations in the gene of connexin 26 (Cx26) are the most common cause of human non-syndromic hereditary deafness. The pathogenesis of deafness caused by Cx26 remains uncertain. To explore the basic mechanism underlying Cx26 null mutations, ultrastructural changes and a number of marker proteins in the cochlear sensory epithelium of Cx26 conditional knockout mice were observed in the current study. Cochlear specimens were...

This article is from BMC Neurology , volume 13 . Abstract Background: The risk of falling is associated with cognitive dysfunction. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exhibit an accelerated reduction of brain volume, and face an increased risk of falling. The current study examined the relationship between baseline physical performance, baseline gray matter volume and falls during a 12-month follow-up period among community-dwelling older adults with MCI. Methods: Forty-two older...

This article is from Chemmedchem , volume 8 . Abstract Previously reported pyrrolones, such as TDR32570, exhibited potential as antimalarial agents; however, while these compounds have potent antimalarial activity, they suffer from poor aqueous solubility and metabolic instability. Here, further structure–activity relationship studies are described that aimed to solve the developability issues associated with this series of compounds. In particular, further modifications to the lead...

Between the launch of the \textit{GGS Wind} spacecraft in 1994 November and the end of 2010, the Konus-\textit{Wind} experiment detected 296 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (including 23 bursts which can be classified as short bursts with extended emission). During this period, the IPN consisted of up to eleven spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 271 bursts were obtained. We present the most comprehensive IPN localization data on these events. The short burst detection...

This article is from Diagnostic Pathology , volume 8 . Abstract Background: STAT is the backward position of cytokine and growth factor receptors in the nucleus, STAT dimers could bind to DNA and induce transcription of specific target genes. Several lines of evidence support the important roles of STAT, especially STAT5, in carcinogenesis. The overexpression of STAT 5 is related to the differentiation and apoptosis of tumor cells. However, the role of STAT5 in esophageal squamous cell...

Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition characterized by repetitive episodes of complete (apnea) or partial (hypopnea) obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in oxygen desaturation and arousal from sleep. Intermittent hypoxia (IH) resulting from OSA may cause structural neuron damage and dysfunction in the central nervous system (CNS). Clinically, it manifests as neurocognitive and...

I like to keep my car clean, and I've found the best spot for me to put a stray wrapper or empty can or cup while I'm piloting the scow is in a bag behind the passenger's seat. I used to have a reuseable bag in my VW Beetle that I'd throw stuff in, but to empty it, you'd have to take the seat cushion up and off... which in a Beetle means sliding the seat all the way back, then tipping it all the way forward... with a full bag of trash. These hooks snap onto the 17mm diameter uprights of my seat...

The logic of hereditary Harrop formulas (HH) has proven useful for specifying a wide range of formal systems. This logic includes a form of hypothetical judgment that leads to dynamically changing sets of assumptions and that is key to encoding side conditions and contexts that occur frequently in structural operational semantics (SOS) style presentations. Specifications are often useful in reasoning about the systems they describe. The Abella theorem prover supports such reasoning by...
