This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 12 . Abstract An electronic meter to measure surface seawater density is presented. It is based on the measurement of the difference in displacements of a surface level probe and a weighted float, which according to Archimedes’ law depends on the density of the water. The displacements are simultaneously measured using a high-accuracy magnetostrictive sensor, to which a custom electronic board provides a wireless connection and power...

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$\phi_1$ at the $\Upsilon(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$\pi$ tagging." In $\Upsilon(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/\psi K_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $\Upsilon(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the...

The nature of the nonlinear interactions in gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence, driven by an ion-temperature gradient instability, is investigated using numerical simulations of single ion species plasma in three-dimensional flux tube geometry. To account for the level of separation existing between scales involved in an energetic interaction, the degree of locality of the free energy scale flux is analyzed employing Kraichnan's infrared (IR) and ultraviolet locality functions. Due to the nontrivial...

We carried out specific-heat and ac-susceptibility experiments under hydrostatic pressure to investigate the interplay of spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism (A) and superconductivity (S) in single-crystalline AS-type CeCu2Si2. We find evidence for a line of magnetic-field- and pressure-tuned quantum critical points in the normal state in the zero-temperature magnetic field-pressure plane. Our analysis suggests an extension of this line into the superconducting state and corroborates the close...

We characterize the mechanical quality factor of micro-oscillators covered by a highly reflective coating. We test an approach to the reduction of mechanical losses, that consists in limiting the size of the coated area to reduce the strain and the consequent energy loss in this highly dissipative component. Moreover, a mechanical isolation stage is incorporated in the device. The results are discussed on the basis of an analysis of homogeneous and non-homogeneous losses in the device and...

The recent measurement of the neutrino velocity with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam, on whose basis it was found that (v-c)/c = (2.48 \pm 0.28 (stat.) \pm 0.30 (sys.)) 10e-5, does not contain any significant violation of Local Lorentz Invariance (LLI), since the corresponding value of the parameter delta=(u/c)^2-1, that represents the upper limit of the breakdown of LLI, is at least three orders of magnitude higher than the known lower limit reported in literature and is compatible with...

Density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure of Ce- and Pu-based heavy fermion superconductors in the so-called 115 family are performed. The gap equation is used to consider which superconducting order parameters are most favorable assuming a pairing interaction that is peaked at (\pi,\pi,q_z) - the wavevector for the antiferromagnetic ordering found in close proximity. In addition to the commonly accepted $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter, there is evidence that an extended...

Scattering of two spinless charge particles for simple forces including coulomb admixtures is calculated without partial wave decomposition. The coulomb interaction being taken is of the type of screened coulomb potential. For the forces range are not infinite, the standard scattering theory is applied. The differential and total cross section is calculated and coulomb effects are shown.

The O(N) invariant quartic anharmonic oscillator is shown to be exactly solvable if the interaction parameter satisfies special conditions. The problem is directly related to that of a quantum double well anharmonic oscillator in an external field. A finite dimensional matrix equation for the problem is constructed explicitly, along with analytical expressions for some excited states in the system. The corresponding Niven equations for determining the polynomial solutions for the problem are...

This paper develops numerical methods for optimal control of mechanical systems in the Lagrangian setting. It extends the theory of discrete mechanics to enable the solutions of optimal control problems through the discretization of variational principles. The key point is to solve the optimal control problem as a variational integrator of a specially constructed higher-dimensional system. The developed framework applies to systems on tangent bundles, Lie groups, underactuated and nonholonomic...

Quantum Graphity is an approach to quantum gravity based on a background independent formulation of condensed matter systems on graphs. We summarize recent results obtained on the notion of emergent geometry from the point of view of a particle hopping on the graph. We discuss the role of connectivity in emergent Lorentzian perturbations in a curved background and the Bose--Hubbard (BH) model defined on graphs with particular symmetries.

In proper homotopy theory, the original concept of point used in the classical homotopy theory of topological spaces is generalized in order to obtain homotopy groups that study the infinite of the spaces. This idea: "Using any arbitrary object as base point" and even "any morphism as zero morphism" can be developed in most of the algebraic homotopy theories. In particular, categories with a natural cone have a generalized homotopy theory obtained through the relative...

In this investigation we quantify the metallicities of low mass galaxies by constructing the most comprehensive census to date. We use galaxies from the SDSS and DEEP2 survey and estimate metallicities from their optical emission lines. We also use two smaller samples from the literature which have metallicities determined by the direct method using the temperature sensitive [OIII]4363 line. We examine the scatter in the local mass-metallicity (MZ) relation determined from ~20,000 star-forming...

We continue our study of topological partial *algebras, focusing our attention to the interplay between the various partial multiplications. The special case of partial *-algebras of operators is examined first, in particular the link between the strong and the weak multiplications, on one hand, and invariant positive sesquilinear (ips) forms, on the other. Then the analysis is extended to abstract topological partial *algebras, emphasizing the crucial role played by appropriate bounded...

In this paper, we investigate the properties of recurrent planar Markov random walks. More precisely, we study the set of recurrent points with the use of local limit theorems. The Nagaev-Guivarc'h spectral method provides several examples for which these local limit theorems are satisfied as soon as the (standard or non-standard) central limit theorem holds.

Roughly speaking, a recurrence relation is nested if it contains a subexpression of the form ... A(...A(...)...). Many nested recurrence relations occur in the literature, and determining their behavior seems to be quite difficult and highly dependent on their initial conditions. A nested recurrence relation A(n) is said to be undecidable if the following problem is undecidable: given a finite set of initial conditions for A(n), is the recurrence relation calculable? Here calculable means that...

We compare the phenomenology of two models, the so-called minimal Z' and an effective model for a SM-like Higgs realised as a composite state of a new strong interaction, at a multi-TeV linear collider in the hypothesis that the new physics is at a scale beyond the direct reach of the machine.

We propose the liquid-scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) as a next-generation neutrino observatory on the scale of 50 kt. The outstanding successes of the Borexino and KamLAND experiments demonstrate the large potential of liquid-scintillator detectors in low-energy neutrino physics. LENA's physics objectives comprise the observation of astrophysical and terrestrial neutrino sources as well as the investigation of neutrino oscillations. In the GeV energy range, the...
