In this paper we establish results that will be required for the study of the algebraic geometry of partially-commutative groups. We define classes of groups axiomatised by sentences determined by a graph. Among the classes which arise this way we find CSA and CT groups. We study the centraliser dimension of a group, with particular attention to the height of the lattice of centralisers, which we call the centraliser dimension of the group. The behaviour of centraliser dimension under several...

Fires burning across the island of Sumatra produced a significant amount of pollution in February 2005. Because one of the by-products of combustion is carbon monoxide, the gas is a good tracer of fire-induced pollution. In February, high levels of carbon monoxide hung over Sumatra and Malaysia. This false-color image shows the concentrations of carbon monoxide at an altitude of roughly 3 kilometers (700 millibars) in the atmosphere. The data were collected by the Measurements Of Pollution In...

We report on the angular momentum content of heavily embedded protostars based on our analysis of the projected rotation velocities (v sin i s) of 38 Class I/flat spectrum young stellar objects presented by Doppmann et al (2005). After correcting for projection effects, we find that infrared-selected Class I/flat spectrum objects rotate significantly more quickly (median equatorial rotation velocity ~ 38 km/sec) than Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs; median equatorial rotation velocity ~ 18...

For the Cooper/BCS model interaction in superconductors (SCs) it is shown: a) how BCS-Bose crossover picture transition temperatures Tc, defined self-consistently by both the gap and fermion-number equations, require unphysically large couplings to differ significantly from the Tc of ordinary BCS theory defined without the number equation since here the chemical potential is assumed equal to the Fermi energy; how although ignoring either hole- or electron-Cooper-pairs in the recent...

We study certain nearby cycles sheaves on an affine flag manifold which arise naturally in the Beilinson-Gaitsgory deformation of the affine flag manifold to the affine Grassmannian. We study the multiplicity functions we introduced in an earlier paper, which encode the data of the Jordan-Hoelder series. We prove the multiplicity functions are polynomials in q, and we give a sharp bound for their degrees. Our results apply as well to the nearby cycles in the p-adic deformation of...

We prove that the isomorphism problem for finitely generated fully residually free groups is decidable. We also show that each finitely generated fully residually free group G has a decomposition that is invariant under automorphisms of G, and obtain a structure theorem for the group of outer automorphisms Out(G).

We derive the peak luminosity - peak energy (L_iso - E_peak) correlation using 22 long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with firm redshift measurements. We find that its slope is similar to the correlation between the time integrated isotropic emitted energy E_iso and E_peak (Amati et al. 2002). For the 15 GRBs in our sample with estimated jet opening angle we compute the collimation corrected peak luminosity L_gamma, and find that it correlates with E_peak. This has, however, a scatter larger than the...

Bulk NiFe2O4 is an insulating ferrimagnet. Here, we report on the epitaxial growth of spinel NiFe2O4 ultrathin films onto SrTiO3 single-crystals. We will show that - under appropriate growth conditions - epitaxial stabilization leads to the formation of a spinel phase with magnetic and electrical properties that radically differ from those of the bulk material : an enhanced magnetic moment (Ms) - about 250% larger - and a metallic character. A systematic study of the thickness dependence of Ms...

A mixed quantum-classical approach to simulate the coupled dynamics of electrons and nuclei in nanoscale molecular systems is presented. The method relies on a second order expansion of the Lagrangian in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) around a suitable reference density. We show that the inclusion of the second order term renders the method a self-consistent scheme and improves the calculated optical spectra of molecules by a proper treatment of the coupled response. High-throughput techniques are leading to an explosive growth in the size of biological databases and creating the opportunity to revolutionize our understanding of life and disease. Interpretation of these data remains, however, a major scientific challenge. Here, we propose a methodology that enables us to extract and display information contained in complex networks. Specifically, we demonstrate that one can (i) find functional modules in complex networks, and (ii) classify nodes into...

We show how to perform reversible universal quantum computation on a translationally invariant pure state, using only global operations based on next-neighbor interactions. We do not need not to break the translational symmetry of the state at any time during the computation. Since the proposed scheme fulfills the locality condition of a quantum cellular automata, we present a reversible quantum cellular automaton capable of universal quantum computation.

The photonuclear production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the QCD color dipole picture, with particular emphasis on the saturation model. The integrated cross section and the rapidity distribution for the A + A --> V + A + A (V = rho, omega, phi, J/Psi) process are computed and theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given for energies of RHIC and LHC. Four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere has highly charged baryon-like states built from anti-symmetric combinations of the adjoint scalars. We show that these states, which are equivalently described as holes in a free fermi sea of a reduced matrix model, are D-branes. Their excitations are stringlike and effectively realize Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in various directions. The low energy brane dynamics should realize an emergent gauge theory that is...

In this paper the Randall-Sundrum model with brane-localized curvature terms is considered. Within some range of parameters a compact extra dimension in this model can be astronomically large. In this case the model predicts small deviation from Newton's law at astronomical scales, caused by the massive modes. The existence of this deviation can result in a slight affection on the planetary motion trajectories.

Super coherent states are useful in the explicit construction of representations of superalgebras and quantum superalgebras. In this contribution, we describe how they are used to construct (quantum) boson-fermion realizations and representations of (quantum) superalgebras. We work through a few examples: $osp(1|2)$ and its quantum version $U_t[osp(1|2)]$, $osp(2|2)$ in the non-standard and standard bases and $gl(2|2)$ in the non-standard basis. We obtain free boson-fermion realizations of...

A detailed investigation of the unusual dynamics of the magnetization of (Et4N)3Fe2F9 (Fe2), containing isolated [Fe2F9]3- dimers, is presented and discussed. Fe2 possesses an S=5 ground state with an energy barrier of 2.40 K due to an axial anisotropy. Poor thermal contact between sample and bath leads to a phonon bottleneck situation, giving rise to butterfly-shaped hysteresis loops below 5 K concomitant with slow decay of the magnetization for magnetic fields Hz applied along the Fe--Fe...

We present measurements of the transverse momentum spectra for $\mathrm{K^{0}_{S}}$, $\Lambda$, $\Xi$ and their antiparticles in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200 GeV$. The extracted mid-rapidity yields and $ $ are in agreement with previous $p+\bar{p}$ experiments while they have smaller statistical errors. We compare the measured spectra for $\mathrm{K^{0}_{S}}$ and $\Lambda$ to the latest available calculations from NLO pQCD and see good agreement for the $\mathrm{K^{0}_{S}}$ above 1.5 GeV/c.

We introduce an alternative discretization for static quarks on the lattice retaining the O(a) improvement properties of the Eichten-Hill action. In this formulation, statistical fluctuations are reduced by a factor which grows exponentially with Euclidean time, x_0. For the first time, B-meson correlation functions are computed with good statistical precision in the static approximation for x_0>1 fm. At lattice spacings a \approx 0.1 fm, a \approx 0.08 fm and a \approx 0.07 fm the B_s-meson...

Belle data for the pi-pi mass spectrum in X(3872) -> pi-pi + JPsi are well fitted by rho + J/Psi with JPC = 1++, but are poorly fitted by the pi-pi S-wave. Formulae for partial wave amplitudes are given for all likely JPC and decay modes of the 3941 MeV peak in omega + J/Psi. Angular correlations involving up to five angles may allow a spin-parity determination, even with quite low statistics. Branes now occupy center stage in theoretical physics as microscopic components of M-theory, as the higher-dimensional progenitors of black holes and as entire universes in their own right. Their history has been a checkered one, however. Here we list some of the milestones, starting with Dirac's 1962 paper. Asim Barut was an early pioneer.

The Gross-Perry-Sorkin spacetime, formed by the Euclidean Taub-NUT space with the time trivially added, is the appropriate background of the Dirac magnetic monopole without an explicit mass term. One remarks that there exists a very simple five-dimensional metric of spacetimes carrying massive magnetic monopoles that is an exact solution of the vacuum Einstein equations. Moreover, the same isometry properties as the original Euclidean Taub-NUT space are preserved. This leads to an Abelian...

A realization of a virtual link diagram is obtained by choosing over/under markings for each virtual crossing. Any realization can also be obtained from some representation of the virtual link. (A representation of a virtual link is a link diagram on an oriented 2-dimensional surface.) We prove that if a minimal genus representation meets certain criteria then there is a minimal genus representation resulting in a knotted realization.

Hydrodynamical modeling of heavy ion collisions at RHIC suggests that the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) "thermalizes" in a remarkably short time scale, about 0.6 fm/c. We argue that this should be viewed as indicating fast isotropization, but not necessarily complete thermalization, of the non-equilibrium QGP. Non-Abelian plasma instabilities can drive local isotropization of an anisotropic QGP on a time scale which is faster than ordinary perturbative scattering processes. As a result, we...

Data from KEK on subthreshold $\bar{\mrm{p}}$ as well as on $\pi^\pm$ and $\mrm{K}^\pm$ production in proton-, deuteron- and $\alpha$-induced reactions at energies between 2.0 and 12.0 A GeV for C, Cu and Pb targets are described within a unified approach. We use a model which considers a nuclear reaction as an incoherent sum over collisions of varying numbers of projectile and target nucleons. It samples complete events and thus allows for the simultaneous consideration of all final particles...
