*Description*: Resembling an interstellar Frisbee, this is a disk of dust seen edge-on around a newborn star in the Orion nebula, located 1,500 light-years away. Because the disk is edge-on, the star is largely hidden inside, in this striking Hubble Space Telescope picture. The disk may be an embryonic planetary system in the making. Our solar system probably formed out of just such a disk 4.5 billion years ago. At 17 times the diameter of our own solar system, this disk is the largest of...

*Description*: These are Hubble Space Telescope images of four newly discovered protoplanetary disks around young stars in the Orion nebula, located 1,500 light-years away. Gas and dust disks, long suspected by astronomers to be an early stage of planetary formation, can be directly seen in visible light by Hubble. Disks around young stars (also known as circumstellar or protoplanetary disks) are thought to be made up of 99% gas and 1% dust. Even that small amount of dust is enough to make the...

A brief overview of the recent measurements of the branching ratio of the rare $K_L^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ decay in the context of their agreement with the Standard Model (SM) is given. It is shown that KEK result well correlates with the SM and B-physics, whereas the BNL results are in conflict with the SM with the heavy top quark.

We consider the possibility of observing deviations from the Standard Model gauge-boson self-couplings at a future $500$~GeV $e^+ e^-$ linear collider. We concentrate on the case in which the electroweak symmetry breaking sector is strongly interacting and there are no new resonances within reach of the collider. We find a sensitivity to the anomalous couplings that is two orders of magnitude higher than that achievable at LEP II. We also show how a polarized electron beam extends the reach of...

Kinetics of the optical and Raman response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4} were studied during room temperature annealing following heat treatment. The superconducting T_c, dc resistivity, and low-energy optical conductivity recover slowly, implying a long relaxation time for the carrier density. Short relaxation times are observed for the B_{1g} Raman scattering -- magnetic, continuum, and phonon -- and the charge transfer band. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that these two relaxation rates are related...

We provide some additional evidence in favour of the strong - weak coupling duality between the SO(32) heterotic and type I superstring theories by comparing terms quartic in the gauge field strength in their low-energy effective actions. We argue that these terms should not receive higher-loop string corrections so that duality should relate the leading-order perturbative coefficients in the two theories. In particular, we demonstrate that the coefficient of the $F^4$-term in the one-loop...

The phase diagram of non-compact lattice QED in four dimensions with staggered fermions of charges 1 and $-1/2$ is investigated. The renormalized charges are determined and found to be in agreement with perturbation theory. This is an indication that there is no continuum limit with non-vanishing renormalized gauge coupling, and that the theory has a validity bound for every finite value of the renormalized coupling. The renormalization group flow of the charges is investigated and an estimate...

A description of the Fortran program HECTOR for a variety of semi-analytical calculations of radiative QED, QCD, and electroweak corrections to the double-differential cross sections of NC and CC deep inelastic charged lepton proton (or lepton deuteron) scattering is presented. HECTOR originates from the substantially improved and extended earlier programs HELIOS and TERAD91. It is mainly intended for applications at HERA or LEPxLHC, but may be used also for muon scattering in fixed target...

In the paper we present a different proof of the theorem of B. L. Feigin and D. B. Fuchs about the structure of Verma modules over Virasoro algebra. We state some new results about the structure of Verma modules over Neveu-Schwarz. The proof has thwo advantages: first, it is simplier in the most interesting cases (for example in the so called minimal models), second, it can be generalized for Neveu-Schwarz algebra for some class of Verma modules.

We examine the colour structure and charged particle yield for both the $t \bar t$ signal and the irreducible background processes contributing to \eebbww\ production close to the \ttb\ threshold. The charged particle multiplicity for the various components of the cross section is computed as a function of several kinematic variables. Our study may have important implications for recently proposed studies of interconnection phenomena in \ttb\ production at high--energy $e^+e^-$ colliders

In recent years several new Majoron models were invented to avoid shortcomings of the classical models while leading to observable decay rates in double beta experiments. We give the first experimental half life bounds on double beta decays with new Majoron emission and derive bounds on the effective neutrino--Majoron couplings from the data of the $^{76}Ge$ HEIDELBERG--MOSCOW experiment. While stringent half life limits for all decay modes and the coupling constants of the classical models...

In this letter we present a dynamical study of the structure of metastable states (corresponding to TAP solutions) in a mean-field spin-glass model. After reviewing known results of the statical approach, we use dynamics: starting from an initial condition thermalized at a temperature between the statical and the dynamical transition temperatures, we are able to study the relaxational dynamics within metastable states and we show that they are characterized by a true breaking of ergodicity and...

We construct a non-perturbative, single-valued solution for the metric and the motion of $N$ interacting particles in $2+1$-Gravity. The solution is explicit for two particles with any speed and for any number of particles with small speed. It is based on a mapping from multivalued Minkowskian coordinates to single-valued ones, which solves the non-abelian monodromies due to particles' momenta. The two and three-body cases are treated in detail.

Results of calculation of all subprocesses in proton-antiproton collisions which contribute to the W+2jets final state are presented at Tevatron energy. The calculation has been carried out by means of the CompHEP software package. A detail comparison with VECBOS generator results for cross sections and various distributions shows an agreement at the level of Monte-Carlo accuracy. Therefore the additional independent check of VECBOS generator has been done. In complement to the VECBOS generator...
