We studied the rule 150 elementary cellular automaton in terms of the distribution of the spacings of the singular values of the matieces obtained from proper time evolutions patterns. The distribution has strong resembrance to that of the random matrices which is derived from Painlev\'e V equation. Some analytic results for the relative period of the ECS are also presented.

In the first half of the paper, some recent advances in coupled dynamical systems, in particular, a globally coupled map are surveyed. First, dominance of Milnor attractors in partially ordered phase is demonstrated. Second, chaotic itinerancy in high-dimensional dynamical systems is briefly reviewed, with discussion on a possible connection with a Milnor attractor network. Third, infinite-dimensional collective dynamics is studied, in the thermodynamic limit of the globally coupled map, where...

Biological functions are generated as a result of developmental dynamics that form phenotypes governed by genotypes. The dynamical system for development is shaped through genetic evolution following natural selection based on the fitness of the phenotype. Here we study how this dynamical system is robust to noise during development and to genetic change by mutation. We adopt a simplified transcription regulation network model to govern gene expression, which gives a fitness function. Through...

Network of nonlinear dynamical elements often show clustering of synchronization by chaotic instability. Relevance of the clustering to ecological, immune, neural, and cellular networks is discussed, with the emphasis of partially ordered states with chaotic itinerancy. First, clustering with bit structures in a hypercubic lattice is studied. Spontaneous formation and destruction of relevant bits are found, which give self-organizing, and chaotic genetic algorithms. When spontaneous changes of...

Strength of attractor is studied by the return rate to itself after perturbations, for a multi-attractor state of a globally coupled map. It is found that fragile (Milnor) attractors have a large basin volume at the partially ordered phase. Such dominance of fragile attractors is understood by robustness of global attraction in the phase space. Change of the attractor strength and basin volume against the parameter and size are studied. In the partially ordered phase, the dynamics is often...

One-loop two-, three- and four-point scalar functions are analytically integrated directly such that they are expressed in terms of Lauricella's hypergeometric function $F_D$. For two- and three-point functions, exact expressions are obtained with arbitrary combination of kinematic and mass parameters in arbitrary space-time dimension. Four-point function is expressed in terms of $F_D$ up to the finite part in the expansion around 4-dimensional space-time with arbitrary combination of kinematic...

A mechanism of sympatric speciation is presented based on the interaction-induced developmental plasticity of phenotypes. First, phenotypes of individuals with identical genotypes split into a few groups, according to instability in the developmental dynamics that are triggered with the competitive interaction among individuals. Then, through mutational change of genes, the phenotypic differences are fixed to genes, until the groups are completely separated in genes as well as phenotypes. It is...

The views held by Kaneko Fumiko are remarkable for a young woman of her time. She was hardly twenty, had a limited education, and had grown up in an atmosphere in which patriotism and loyalty to the emperor were viewed as the moral core of Japanese life. Not only is it remarkable that she formulated such a heretical social and political philosophy, but her refusal to grovel before the authorities is even more extraordinary. She refused to cower before the prosecutors and judges, and she...

An extension of coupled maps is given which allows for the growth of the number of elements, and is inspired by the cell differentiation problem. The growth of elements is made possible first by clustering the phases, and then by differentiating roles. The former leads to the time sharing of resources, while the latter leads to the separation of roles for the growth. The mechanism of the differentiation of elements is studied. An extension to a model with several internal phase variables is...

The prevalence of Milnor attractors has recently been reported in a class of high-dimensional dynamical systems. We study how this prevalence depends on the number of degrees of freedom by using a globally coupled map and show that the basin fraction of Milnor attractors increases drastically around 5-10 degrees of freedom, saturating for higher numbers of degrees of freedom. It is argued that this dominance of Milnor attractors in the basin arises from a combinatorial explosion of the basin...

The origin of heredity is studied as a recursive state in a replicating proto-cell consisting of many molecule species in mutually catalyzing reaction networks. Protocells divide when the number of molecules, increasing due to replication, exceeds a certain threshold. We study how the chemicals in a catalytic network can form recursive production states in the presence of errors in the replication process. Depending on the balance between the total number of molecules in a cell and the number...

Phenotype of biological systems needs to be robust against mutation in order to sustain themselves between generations. On the other hand, phenotype of an individual also needs to be robust against fluctuations of both internal and external origins that are encountered during growth and development. Is there a relationship between these two types of robustness, one during a single generation and the other during evolution? Could stochasticity in gene expression have any relevance to the...

The characterization of plasticity, robustness, and evolvability, an important issue in biology, is studied in terms of phenotypic fluctuations. By numerically evolving gene regulatory networks, the proportionality between the phenotypic variances of epigenetic and genetic origins is confirmed. The former is given by the variance of the phenotypic fluctuation due to noise in the developmental process; and the latter, by the variance of the phenotypic fluctuation due to genetic mutation. The...

The relevance of chaos to evolution is discussed in the context of the origin and maintenance of diversity and complexity. Evolution to the edge of chaos is demonstrated in an imitation game. As an origin of diversity, dynamic clustering of identical chaotic elements, globally coupled each to other, is briefly reviewed. The clustering is extended to nonlinear dynamics on hypercubic lattices, which enables us to construct a self-organizing genetic algorithm. A mechanism of maintenance of...

Fluctuations of the mean field of a globally coupled dynamical systems are discussed. The origin of hidden coherence is related with the instability of the fixed point solution of the self-consistent Perron-Frobenius equation. Collective dynamics in globally coupled tent maps are re-examined, both with the help of direct simulation and the Perron-Frobenius equation. Collective chaos in a single band state, and bifurcation against initial conditions in a two-band state are clarified with the...

A computer program has been developed which generates Feynman graphs automatically for scattering and decay processes in non-Abelian gauge theory of high-energy physics. A new acceleration method is presented for both generating and eliminating graphs. This method has been shown to work quite efficiently for any order of coupling constants in any kind of theoretical model. A utility program is also available for drawing generated graphs. These programs consist of the most basic parts of the...

Basic problems for the construction of a scenario for the Life are discussed. To study the problems in terms of dynamical systems theory, a scheme of intra-inter dynamics is presented. It consists of internal dynamics of a unit, interaction among the units, and the dynamics to change the dynamics itself, for example by replication (and death) of units according to their internal states. Applying the dynamics to cell differentiation, isologous diversification theory is proposed. According to it,...

Traveling waves triggered by a phase slip in coupled map lattices are studied. A local phase slip affects globally the system, which is in strong contrast with kink propagation. Attractors with different velocities coexist, and form quantized bands determined by the number of phase slips. The mechanism and statistical and dynamical characters are studied with the use of spatial asymmetry, basin volume ratio, Lyapunov spectra, and mutual information. If the system size is not far from an integer...

A protocell model consisting of mutually catalyzing molecules is studied in order to investigate how chemical compositions are transferred recursively through cell divisions under replication errors. Depending on the path rate, the numbers of molecules and species, three phases are found: fast switching state without recursive production, recursive production, and itinerancy between the above two states. The number distributions of the molecules in the recursive states are shown to be...

Questions on possible relationship between phenotypic plasticity and evolvability, as well as that between robustness and evolution have been addressed over decades in the field of evolution-development. By introducing an evolutionary stability assumption on the distribution of phenotype and genotype, we establish quantitative relationships on plasticity, phenotypic fluctuations, and evolvability. Derived are proportionality among plasticity as a responsiveness of phenotype against...
