by william kent and sculptures by garr waterman gar's monumental metal beetles have also been shown at a special exhibit at the peabody museum today we are excited to be hosting a very special event judith k liebman a poet who lives in brantford connecticut will be reading a section of old and new poems her work has been published widely including in the new york times the cream city review the laurel review and most recently in the february issue of scientific american [Music] first of all thank you for that lovely introduction and thank you for inviting me to give this reading and thank everybody else for coming on this drizzly miserable sunday um [Music] it's been a wonderful experience to know gar and thea and to share in their enthusiasm not only for their own art but for everybody else's so i'd like to begin with a poem that's actually a wish fulfillment for this poet sending her babes out into the world excuse me i'm going to set my timer because my fear is that you'll fall asleep [Music] how to read a poem first of all pay close attention to the words that strut and preen by pigeons taking up positions in their measured pace orderly and disciplined more or less then open your throat and sing aloud what you find written roll your tongue around each sound the raspy sibilance the undulating vowels the shadowed overtones that darken cheer the open purity of key of c catch your breath at all those oddball images be dazzled let them seduce disorient and pull the rug out from under your resistance ask yourself what does it mean was your elation that free song of recognition the puzzlement of shared distress the intention of the poet or just an accident of misinterpretation then disregard the answer open your hearts be touched have courage when the ground you stand on quakes exalt [Applause] so the next poem to my great delight was published in the scientific american last month the february issue and i've been reading the scientific american since i was 12 years old and never thought that i would ever appear in their pages but thanks to david sobel who you might have heard of she wrote some wonderful books among them galileo's daughter and longitude she is the new editor of a column in the scientific american that's devoted to poetry called leader and that's where this appeared and the poem itself was inspired by an experiment at the fermilab accelerator i'm going to tell you all this because otherwise it'll be just too hard to do and it's called muon minus 2. muons are chubby little quantum particles about the size of an electron that pop in and out of existence and do that naturally but the people at fermi wanted to do it purposely because they wanted to measure how long the muon actually exists when it has three things it needs mass it needs spin and it needs a charge and when it has all those things it's in a wobble and the wobble is this moment a real tiny little moment a fraction of a millisecond when it's alive and then it dissipates into its parts and the physicist wanted to test the lifespan of this muon to make sure that the grand theory that they had evolved and invented in the past century was stood up to the actual measurement the grand standard theory of physics you can guess that it didn't the muon lived way longer than it was supposed to and everybody got into a terrible kerfuffle and some of the more inspiring reactions were rubbing your hands and saying okay now we've got some stuff to look for so that's the context of this particular poem i should also point out that it's in the form of a gazal which is a an indian and then arabic form of a poem which has no rhythm but it does have couplets and the last line of each couplet has to have the same word which in this case which you now understand why is wobble elective affinities because all of the mu on the muon's aberrant behavior an extended quantum particle wobble upends the standard theory creating in physics an existential wobble normally a wave like excitation spinning through higgs gravitational field unless caught and entangled in a moment a viable wobble endowed with inertia and mass by its fellow particles embrace a short-lived liaison alas for it soon decomposes in an unavoidable model mathematical equations calculate how long the muon dances go on what fraction of a millisecond until its final metaphysical wobble the calculations are precise just wrong held in the mesh of gravity and spin a skein of quantum magnetic charge the muon persists outlives his foreseeable wobble in the pull and twitch of particle affinities knitting and purling the fabric of the universe something has not been accounted for that prolongs the muon's mortal wobble this flouting of what we think we know requires us to think again to ponder what unknown matter lepton quark or boson explains the muon's extendable wobble the enigma entwines us all in our own life's brief entanglement anchored between infinities small and large we too hover then fade in a final fatal wobble do we then spin on subatomized in the quantum particle soup does immortality in fact exist in the blips of an electromagnetic celestial wobble so sometimes that inability of science to reassure us along with everything else we go through like pandemics and war and the loss of loved ones kind of makes you throw up your hands which is i guess the inspiration of the next poem [Applause] unto dust why do we squabble over quibbles does it matter if matter is dark or how fast the universe expands forced by the big bang's bang into a thin dark void much like what was there before before in our finite pass in the infinite need we ponder time and space how the infinite bends back upon itself and pushes time to lose its timeliness is the particularity of particles infinitesimal both in size and span consequential to our own inconsequence the answers are elusive we fail to explicate the inexplicable and hitch our fate to what we cannot comprehend entangled in the tangles of the cosmic web bound up as in silken chrysalis spun of copernican delusion we pray make sacrifices to gods build cyclotrons and telescopes and send robots into space no avail in the end the quantum parts of us held together by the forces of gravitational fields mortality entwined in immortality succumbed to the ebb of inter-particle pull dissolving into the cosmic dust we came from [Applause] there are however times when the universe and us seem to be in harmony so if you've ever gone swimming on a dark night in the sound at the end of the summer when everything is warm you may have experienced a wonderful phenomenon called bioluminescence so when you touch the water little creatures who have this bioluminescent uh ability will shine and flicker about and if you wave an arm you get an ark and if you swim you're swimming in a cloud of this wonderful bioluminescence on the beach under a night sky how far away and long ago everything seems they say the stars whose radiance i embrace have been dead for eons their beams just an illusion collapsing time and space yet here under that ark of glittering dead light my feet anchored in the still warm sand held firmer by earth's pull and the thick air of night i stand alive to the lure of the surf's incest insistent murmur i wade into the dark matter of the velvet sea fall forward into the water without stretched hands from my fingertips as if suddenly thrown free a wake of tiny glitter balls spins off in strands with each stroke the luminescence blooms anew as dinoflagellates and moonlight jellyfish living creatures of the deep gleam a delicate earthly blue mimicking the firmament for which i have been grieving their glow suggests that close at hand celestial life exists that even in this time and space allotment it persists so i'm going to turn now from quantum particles to love passion loss and grief a transition which i hope becomes as obvious to you as it is to me in the dunes i should explain in case some of you don't know what da vinci's man is leonardo da vinci has a graphic of the naked man with his arms up and his legs spread and on top of that it superimposed a series of circles and squares with mathematical equations all of which for da vinci indicated the absolute perfection of the human form and how it imitated the celestial harmony that was very important to him so back to the poll in the dunes there you lie spread out of the tide rivet sand da vinci's man each radial limb describes a perfect circle each circle intersects its counterpart eye for eye rib for rib thigh for thigh balanced in palladian exactitude only the entrances and exits occur in singular strung along the axis nose centered between cheeks its pair of nostrils opening and closing chin neck umbilical scar penis curled and napping in its hairy bed i lie down next to you finding a hollow place to lay my cheek against your chest beyond a forest of hair wild and bent as if blown by ocean gales and anchored in a salt-cooled warm the pale expansive sand around us shimmers in the heat then all at once the geometry of you fractures as you turn enclosing me in the circle of your arms i breathe in the tang of your perfume wonder at the way our bodies even as they realign are just to fit lying here just us a float on an endless stretch of beach curving up against an endless sky we knock together asymmetric holding tight [Applause] so i as those of you who are fortunate enough enough to know what intense love is you also know that it's accompanied by intense argument and conflict so this is a poem about such an event and um i have to point out that t.s eliot once wrote a very long essay about something called the objective correlative which is the poet's need to use nature as a reflection of his inner wife and went on by the way to say that hamlet was a bad play because it didn't do that very well but at any rate nocturne young's pond walking the path at water's edge we do not clarify the silence our tattered argument leads us on around the silver disk like raptors circling old hertz above the mirrored spikes of pines until twilight tipping into night stirs the air and riffles the reeds across the pond now turning fiery pink unsettled mallards rise up flaming and fall like sparks among the buffeted trees we watch sky water trees deep into violet purple indigo once light is gone wind fades the water glasses over black as ice out of the dark the path uncoils before us like a pairing it's time to go you say and take my hand the night begins all things seem mutable from darkness range [Applause] so i think also that love particularly mature love sometimes transcends what we would call passion and uh that's what this poem is about sometimes i'd rather not not often but there are times when i lie by your side wondering at how it is that my arm leaned so casually across my hip elbow in the angle of the waist fits so precisely or when i turn and move across the sheets how it is how is it that the convex of your back so intimately fills the concave of my body wrapped around yours i wonder how our bodies manage to evolve to such a consonant affinity how unlike the stars who emulate and die we know to regulate the heat of our desire contemplating this body next to your body its perfect counterpart quells passion we are already fully integrated we too little specks in the vast beyond whose harmony expands in waves of solace precluding order [Applause] so i would like also to read a kind of a love poem about my parents who like many of us had very much an idealistic youth full of passion and planning and then they fell in love and married and then settled down to having to earn a living and raise a family but i don't think love succumbs to that my mother dancing when young before she met my father she wore transparent gauze draped artfully around pearlescent shoulders and danced arms a kimbo swaying interpreting allah izadora whom some say she may rambled she attended lectures at pratt institute and stereographed posters for the party which she joined out of youthful fervor she assured me and not political commitment they met skating at iceland on 47th and broadway she cutting graceful figure eights to casey's walls he explaining ardently the principles of sharing she bowled him over he swept her off her feet they married he took to selling real estate and she to keeping books their living room had matching table nets lamps and a green damask sofa and a tall queen anne armchair my father hid behind on sunday mornings playing hide and seek later in the kitchen drawer i found a photograph of them standing in a garden face to face leaning on a trellis draped with starry blossomed clematis their arms together made a circle his hand touching the place behind her ear her hand resting on his arm it seemed to me they were standing still and dancing [Applause] so along with great love often comes loss and great grief when my husband died a little over a year and a half ago it provoked a lot of feeling and this poem reflects some of that death by black hole do you also wake up dreaming that someone that you loved still alive or perhaps dead wanders too close to the edge of ultimate darkness so dense its gravity allows no light to escape a predator lurking in the graveyard of the firmament patiently waiting to inhale every bit of what had once burned bright in the dream that all gets sucked in emptying the heart longing rage guilt the sweetness of a whispered voice and the butterfly touch of an eyelash the surprise of the first conversation or the sorrow of the last all gone it begs the question what is worse the pain of remembering or the fear of not [Applause] so in the jewish tradition a year after the death of a person there's a non-religious i mean it's not based in in liturgy i don't think right yeah and uh what happens is that the gravestone that's been erected at the gravesite is first covered and then at this ceremony it the gravestone is revealed and there are certain prayers that are said but you kind of have options and people traditionally when they visit a gravesite jews they take stones and place them either on or next to the gravestone to indicate that they have been there and that they're not forgetting the person who died so this is a poem that i wrote to read at my husband's unveiling the unveiling the year rounds up upon itself i gather beach stones heart-shaped like a treasure hunt i find a basket large enough to carry them from the dark edges of the garden i harvest moss to line the basket bitter green a cushion for the stones in the cemetery amidst the red buds leafless bloom your granite monument rises an apparition draped in white your name beneath the covering once written in the book of life is now lest we forget you carved in stone prayers are said grant my beloved a soft landing on the wings of your divine presence let him shine forever among the host of dead or dying stars and blazing emblazoning the firmament illusion of heavenly light let him lie serene and undisturbed while his body boulders in his wooden box but take the rest of him all that persists into the shelter of your embrace there to reunite with the flame from which his spark was thrown from the basket of stones honed and shaped by sea and sand we each choose one to serve as talisman hard and solid and smooth in the hand lined up one after one and one upon one ramparts and towers a fortress against forgetting now you if you are indeed the one turn your attention to us the bereft to live on with holes in our lives help me to retrieve the him who was before before the frail and dwindled only him i tended while we spoke of all things you he gave you credence so help me to recall the warmth and dryness of his hands and how he swam ahead of me to ward off jellyfish have him come to me in dreams we could sit in the garden with a glass of wine arouse to lively conversation by the ironies of daily life or he could whisper in my ear words of love and tell me he in general forgives me and if i open up to life without him he approves you are indeed the one if you are indeed the one let him not fade from us share whatever parts of him you keep alive and close be generous with the blessings of his memory [Applause] so one of the hallmarks of loss and grief i discovered was the fear that we are subject to the vagaries of memory and also to the terror that memory might fade this poem was written out of a feeling like that [Applause] this night i wake up dreaming in deepest sleep i find myself alone strolling in a landscape so familiar i must dream it up night after night i walk in i walk unrushed along a cliff edge path above a beach where mobs of sanderlings scurry after ebbing waves in search of stirred up isopods to eat back and forth pecking with their pointed pencil beaks the path descends along a stretch of dunes where sedge grass grows and tufts down to water's edge [Music] there are sea shells [Music] there are sea shells strewn about and drying strands of washed up seaweed [Music] at this place where land meets water you often stood waiting for me we would linger side by side our feet washed by the waves sinking into dampened sand that seemed to anchor us forever to that spot but this night in my dream before i wake i know i will not find you waiting even there your presence wanes beyond illusion or recall how is it i can dream a landscape so precise and comforting and real but cannot conjure you [Applause] so the last poem that i want to read is a poem in honor of holocaust remembrance day which is going to occur on april 28th so if i can find the phone [Applause] there we go so holocaust remembrance day is dedicated to a man named hirschklich and uh he was a resistance fighter and a survivor of the vilna uprising and he was as well a poet and he wrote a song with um a number of refrains all of which ended with we are here or we are still here and i don't know this has become the anthem of the resistance throughout world war ii and is still sung at memorials for survivors and i don't know if you caught the videos of the president of the ukraine zelinski who is jewish and who i am certain knows this anthem and it's original and he also repeated again and again at the end of what he was saying we are here so it's something that has lasted for a hundred years almost holocaust memorial day snow in april not quite out of season still surprises i listen to the silence as flakes like lacework curtain the night air the snow piles on pines bend and creak under the weight long branches of balsam overhang and sweep the ground hunched together they glow in the light of the street lamp a congregation in white shawls swaying in prayer to the lamentations of the wind in the morning the sky is a cloudless blue sunlight brightens the dry air my robust and rosy children survivors into the fourth generation in boots red and purple but no jackets run making tracks in the snow they throw snowballs at the dog who jumps into the air to catch them with hockey sticks from the shed they beat away the pillows of snow still weighing down the trees a puff of white powder and a branch snaps up into its accustomed shape laughing the children liberate the trees one by one the sound of their laughter rises the joy of the living comfort to the dead thank you again i don't know if you want to ask any questions or anything i'm here if you do yes it's santeo my mom [Music] uh i think it might be interesting a little bit to hear when you started writing poetry and a little bit how you sort of got to i know a lot of these were written recently but some were written a while ago yes well i recently resurrected a poem inspired actually by gar's underwater sculptures which are among his first group in which he does creatures from beneath the sea and it was actually the first poem i ever published and i hate to say it but it's 50 years ago so i can read it well this was not a plan it's called lion fish all day we floated face down in the red sea watching small fish flutter like blossoms blown by currents of the reef among the mounded domes and fans of living coral purple yellow fragments squirrelled we drifted aimlessly above them breathing through tubes to the rhythm of anemone's mouths late in the afternoon when our salt encrusted backs had stiffened in the sun and our fingertips ached from dehydration the big fish sidled into view huge and solitary striped in black and gray spiny wings and headdress looking sharp as knives his bloated lips puckered kissing air and mottled eyes rolled independent revolutions in their coiled sockets he slithered and sashayed among the jewel-like petals who scattered at his awesome approach as he passed under me i stretched an arm to touch but what the mask had made to seem so near was still far out of reach i followed him every time i caught him up and my shadow started to engulf him he skittered for forward almost out of sight i swam faster then hovered motionless above him longing to run a finger up his zebra stripes or grab his tail the air began to cool and the sky to redden before i heard you calling how far i'd come away from shore and the protected reef you seemed a tiny frantic insect waving your antennae arms it was an act of will to turn away from my pursuit and cross the scarlet sea to where you stood on shore and beckoned later in the shock when we returned the snorkels and the masks you pointed out the poster of the fish a life-size portrait under which as if he were a fugitive wanted by the fbi his aliases and a warning in bold print stonefish lionfish scorpion fish use caution contact with his spines is dangerous painful and can lead to paralysis and in some cases death a narrow escape you said and i agreed yet now in the dry nights of the city i dream of him and reach out still to touch [Applause] thank you the theme of the work she has chosen for today revolves around a uniquely modern existential question in the newly revealed ever-expanding universes in which we find ourselves both infinitely large and infinitely small how do our own lives our joys and our sorrows fit in perhaps it is only a poet who could attempt to explore those questions [Music] you 00:00:12.470 --> 00:00:14.629 align:start position:0% [Music] welcome to the keller lytle gallery of new haven our current exhibition pest and tell me he in general forgives me and if i open up to life without him he approves you are indeed the one if you are indeed the one let him not fade from us share whatever parts of him you keep alive and close be generous with the blessings of his memory [Applause] so one of the hallmarks of loss and grief i discovered was the fear that we are subject to the vagaries of memory and also to the terror that memory might fade this poem was written out of a feeling like that [Applause] this night i wake up dreaming in deepest sleep i find myself alone strolling in a landscape so familiar i must dream it up night after night i walk in i walk unrushed along a cliff edge path above a beach where mobs of sanderlings scurry after ebbing waves in search of stirred up isopods to eat back and forth pecking with their pointed pencil beaks the path descends along a stretch of dunes where sedge grass grows and tufts down to water's edge [Music] there are sea shells [Music] there are sea shells strewn about and drying strands of washed up seaweed [Music] at this place where land meets water you often stood waiting for me we would linger side by side our feet washed by the waves sinking into dampened sand that seemed to anchor us forever to that spot but this night in my dream before i wake i know i will not find you waiting even there your presence wanes beyond illusion or recall how is it i can dream a landscape so precise and comforting and real but cannot conjure you [Applause] so the last poem that i want to read is a poem in honor of holocaust remembrance day which is going to occur on april 28th so if i can find the phone [Applause] there we go so holocaust remembrance day is dedicated to a man named hirschklich and uh he was a resistance fighter and a survivor of the vilna uprising and he was as well a poet and he wrote a song with um a number of refrains all of which ended with we are here or we are still here and i don't know this has become the anthem of the resistance throughout world war ii and is still sung at memorials for survivors and i don't know if you caught the videos of the president of the ukraine zelinski who is jewish and who i am certain knows this anthem and it's original and he also repeated again and again at the end of what he was saying we are here so it's something that has lasted for a hundred years almost holocaust memorial day snow in april not quite out of season still surprises i listen to the silence as flakes like lacework curtain the night air the snow piles on pines bend and creak under the weight long branches of balsam overhang and sweep the ground hunched together they glow in the light of the street lamp a congregation in white shawls swaying in prayer to the lamentations of the wind in the morning the sky is a cloudless blue sunlight brightens the dry air my robust and rosy children survivors into the fourth generation in boots red and purple but no jackets run making tracks in the snow they throw snowballs at the dog who jumps into the air to catch them with hockey sticks from the shed they beat away the pillows of snow still weighing down the trees a puff of white powder and a branch snaps up into its accustomed shape laughing the children liberate the trees one by one the sound of their laughter rises the joy of the living comfort to the dead thank you again i don't know if you want to ask any questions or anything i'm here if you do yes it's santeo my mom [Music] uh i think it might be interesting a little bit to hear when you started writing poetry and a little bit how you sort of got to i know a lot of these were written recently but some were written a while ago yes well i recently resurrected a poem inspired actually by gar's underwater sculptures which are among his first group in which he does creatures from beneath the sea and it was actually the first poem i ever published and i hate to say it but it's 50 years ago so i can read it well this was not a plan it's called lion fish all day we floated face down in the red sea watching small fish flutter like blossoms blown by currents of the reef among the mounded domes and fans of living coral purple yellow fragments squirrelled we drifted aimlessly above them breathing through tubes to the rhythm of anemone's mouths late in the afternoon when our salt encrusted backs had stiffened in the sun and our fingertips ached from dehydration the big fish sidled into view huge and solitary striped in black and gray spiny wings and headdress looking sharp as knives his bloated lips puckered kissing air and mottled eyes rolled independent revolutions in their coiled sockets he slithered and sashayed among the jewel-like petals who scattered at his awesome approach as he passed under me i stretched an arm to touch but what the mask had made to seem so near was still far out of reach i followed him every time i caught him up and my shadow started to engulf him he skittered for forward almost out of sight i swam faster then hovered motionless above him longing to run a finger up his zebra stripes or grab his tail the air began to cool and the sky to redden before i heard you calling how far i'd come away from shore and the protected reef you seemed a tiny frantic insect waving your antennae arms it was an act of will to turn away from my pursuit and cross the scarlet sea to where you stood on shore and beckoned later in the shock when we returned the snorkels and the masks you pointed out the poster of the fish a life-size portrait under which as if he were a fugitive wanted by the fbi his aliases and a warning in bold print stonefish lionfish scorpion fish use caution contact with his spines is dangerous painful and can lead to paralysis and in some cases death a narrow escape you said and i agreed yet now in the dry nights of the city i dream of him and reach out still to touch [Applause] thank you the theme of the work she has chosen for today revolves around a uniquely modern existential question in the newly revealed ever-expanding universes in which we find ourselves both infinitely large and infinitely small how do our own lives our joys and our sorrows fit in perhaps it is only a poet who could attempt to explore those questions [Music] you 00:00:14.629 --> 00:00:17.269 align:start position:0% 00:00:17.269 --> 00:00:19.510 align:start position:0%
