Subject: All lot of intrested parties.... Nothing is fucked here Dude
The GPS drum fill after the opening organ arpeggio is freakin sweet. The fill and the entire staccato phrasing of the riffs is very much like the 'remix' from Halloween '09.
Honestly; I hated the [sounds to be a] dotted rest at the beginning of the riff that moves you back into the verses of Question Matters.
Kevin has his first show with a new band and George, Bendy and Z with a new guitarist/sax player (god only knows what else he plays).
I could hear the nervousness/restlessness during the first couple of tunes; but it was obvious that the band had a decent time. It certainly wasn't U-Melt's best or worst show. Just a different day with a different guitarist whom might I add that I was surprised by Kevin's attention to nuances of Rob's riffs.
Did he stumble through some... yeah. Hell, Rob himself did from time to time. They're not easy riffs. If they were, Kevin wouldn't get a pass from me on a few flubs. Just kidding Kev! Keep it up man.
I'm saying by the time the boys get back from out west, U-Melt will be in full effect. B-ware
Keep It Greasy
Subject: Out with the old....
GPS and Question Matters have undergone significant alterations. The first section of GPS, while musically the same, is played entirely different, and much faster. Question Matters has undergone significant musical and structural changes, and Kevin plays sax during the jam; there is no longer any sinister, evil flanged guitar chords. So, now you know.
Anyway, musically, the band is still on point. Given that its Kevin's first show, the flubs are forgiveable and completely understandable; I'm not sure I'd fare any better had I been the one burdened with learning U-Melt material lol.
He's a more-than-capable guitarist, as the solo at the end of GPS demonstrates; its just going to take him time to "figure it out" in regards to what, and how, he should play for certain songs. He's just gotta find his own voice, and gain confidence in his ability to not only perform the songs correctly, but perform them correctly and with passion, and vigor.
Unfortunately, as much as I want to love and accept Kevin's playing, he'll never be able to replace Rob, in my eyes. I'm sure in time I'll grow to appreciate and crave his playing the way I had for Rob, but... I don't know.
U-Melt has a very special meaning in my life, more than just as my favorite band who I love to go see; its a deeper relationship, due to the timing of my formal introduction to the experience of their music at a very dark time in my life, and the transformation that occured within me as a result of that experience (3/3/07). Kevin was not a part of that, so I do not have that personal connection with him, the way I do with Rob.
Regardless, he's a great fucking guitar player. Green Amber is fucking ON FIRE; he tears the shit out of his solo in the middle, and brings the band into a really cool place that I'd never heard them stumble upon before. That climax is fucking CRAZY, yo. Seriously; that may have been the gnarliest Amber jam, and the outro jam into Clear Light is REALLY fucking cool. Total Type II unstructured exploration.
Buy the new album, and go see them when they come to your town. They WILL be coming to your town.
