"approximately 2:12 in the morning the sioux city police department got a 9-1-1 call from a female who stated she had encountered a subject who had been stabbed," said lt. pat mccann of the siouxx city policicdepartment. the victim is 5050ear-old vernon mace, who family members say lived down the street from where he was killed. here's vidid of officers taking the suspect 47- year-old elias wanatee into custody wednesday afternoon. family members say wanatee is married to mace's niece and they are shocked by his death. "he's an amazing guy," said verna hoffman, mace's daughter. "he helped everybody. i'm pretty sure he helped eli. and for eli wrong." . su family members say wanatee stabbed mace down the street and that's when mace made his way to the house behind where his friend lives, asking for help. sioux city police say the stabbing happened during a fight. mace, a father of five, was taken to mercy medical center.. where those close to him, left one final message before he died.
