>> michelle: just because it's >> krystal: it still has >> krystal: pluto -- another blow to pluto. can't catch a break. there's another ninth planet in our solar system. researchers at cal tech claim to have found evidence of what could be, ladies and gentlemen, a ninth planet just past neptune. they say the planet about ten times bigger than earth an orbiting far beyond neptune. astronomers say computer simulations show it would orbit 20 times farther away from the sun than earth. so it hasn't been observed there are distinct signs of gravitational pull consistent with a possible planet. about pluto, it was considered the solar system's ninth planet until 2006 when it got demoted. it's now considered a large moon. >> michelle: it's not even planet status anymore? >> kelly: no they demoted it. >> michelle: that's so hard to wrap my head around. i've always wondered there could be like a whole other earth out there. >> krystal: there could be. >> michelle: we just don't know. they could be doing a newscast right now. the blue ring around pluto is caused by sunlight scattering from haze particles common in pluto's atmosphere. scientists believe the haze is and there is more ice on the surface of pluto than scientists first thought. these new nasa scans prove it... a new map of the dwarf planet was made with nasa's new data. it shows exposed water ice is abundant on pluto's surface. water ice is, in fact, the bedrock of pluto's crust. high pressure has moved on and we are only 48 hrs away from our next front! today, partly cloudy skies will be common with high temperatures in the upper 60s and potentially lower 70s. winds will be light throughout the day and pick up only to a 5-10 mph speed out of the west tonight. saturday brings in the spring-like warmth! highs in the lower 70s will be common but clouds thicken through the day and winds pick up to gusty conditions. 15-25 mph winds look to be common with valley gusts around mph. by saturday night, our rain chances begin! wide spread showers, some heavy downpours, are likely through sunday and expected 6000ft and above through the weekend into monday after

>> yeah, so, actually, the idea there is another planet beyond neptune or pluto when pluto was a planet has a long and fairly sordid history over the past hundred years, really. every time astronomers would see something they didn't quite understand in the outer part of the solar system, the immediate thing everybody jumps to is must be a planet. so you can go back over the last century and read all the different accounts of why there must be a planet. every single one of them turned out to be wrong. usually the data they were looking at were incorrect, sometimes they're misinterpreting data but they've always been wrong. so we're saying, yes, for 100 years, everybody's been wrong, but we're, of course, right. >> brown: of course. i'll go with you for now. this made me think about, for the layman, how this kind of science is done. s the always a mix of theory and observing, that they both work hand in hand? >> yeah, that mix is personified and the two of us have been working on this problem. me, i'm primarily an observational astronomer, i look at the sky and try to figure out what's go

this is what led to the deemotion of pluto, we found other objects like pluto. the weird six, not together but in similarly inclined elliptical orbits, without the influence of something like a planet x is astronomically shawl about 7/,000/77/10000 of 1%. first of all the planet is not a star not very had a hot not going to be glowing with its own light. it may be faintly radiating in the infrared, you play need a telescope or a detector. there is one satellite now called the neowise, formerly the wise mission, this object would be just at the lower limit of what that thing could see. so that's why it's really questionable how long it's going to take. it might take until we have something like the james webb space telescope which is an infrared telescope in orbit or it might be found next week. it is one of these things where we don't have very many of these detentions. the last time a planet was detected was the planet neptune. the track record is very good, only a couple of detections. >> if it was detebted what would it tell us about the solar system? >> it w
