"nightly news" begins now. >>> from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this is "nbc nightly news" with brian williams. >>> good evening. the mayors of new york and boston say they are preparing for the worst. new york has ordered streets closed to traffic starting tonight while boston will get all the snow they can handle. and on parts of the atlantic coast this will feel just like a winter hurricane. blizzard warnings, not winter storm warnings but blizzard warnings, are posted in seven states. five different states have declared states of emergency. and parts of the entire region could be paralyzed for days. we have the entire region covered here tonight. we want to begin with nbc's anne thompson in new york where the evening rush really took place this morning as everyone went home. anne, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. it certainly did. the city that never sleeps is shutting down. new york is getting hit by this storm in waves. come take a look at manhattan's iconic fifth avenue. it is relatively empty as the city prepares for what could be a long and dangerou

it is like waking a sleeping giant today in new york. for more on what we can expect in the next 24 hours, let's get to our meteorologist, bill karins. start with new york and work our way up to where the more serious trends you're following now in the weather. >> in new york people are starting to venture outside, realizing it is safe to do that now. low wind chills greet you in the teen range with light snow still falling, it looks more pretty than anything else. this is not the dangerous side of the storm. new york city was on the far western edge of the storm, did get 8 inches in central park 11 at laguardia. and out of long island 18 inches. wasn't a miss of the forecast by much 25 miles, 30 miles made the difference for new york city. philadelphia were worse than new york city, were expecting 8 to 10 only picked up two inches. those areas did better than expected. that forecast if you want to give it a grade, give that a d. but anywhere from central connecticut out through cape cod, up through all of massachusetts and coastal maine

jersey and part of new york state, including new york city where i'm reporting from. we are going to bring you a lot of fresh information here. reporters across the northeast today, and we start with nbc ease meteorologist dillen drier in boston. what can you tell us about what's happening now? >> reporter: well we are just starting to see this whole thing get started now. 10:00 was that time frame where we start to see heavier storm. and right now we in south boston, and although the snow has been fairly light, it's blowing a lot and starting to cover the streets here and this is what we're going to see deteriorate as we go through the night. as the snow continues to intensify and the winds gust up near 40 50 60 miles per hour we're going to see blowing snow cause whiteout conditions. i want to show you the radar on my ipad here. you can see this darker shade of blue to the sourt of boston. they already have about 4 to 5 inches of snow on the ground. and all of this is starting to move closer and closer to boston. so although we're starting to see the snow blow sidew

a police slowdown here in new york >> a police slow down in new york city. >> i think you are right. i live in the big city. i grew up in new york city as a young black man. most likely i would be killed by another young black man. today as an old black man, again, it is the kind of crime going on with the gang bangers. and then you said, and i think this is right the police are six times more likely to be killed by a young black male who is encrusted in this deep mire of criminality. let's not extend it to the idea that we want to defend bad cops that intimidate and harass. >> but they are a minority. >> i want to tell you something. there is a reason. voters supported de blasio. remember de blasio beat christine quinn in new york city because he said he opposed stop and frisk. black and hispanics are now the majority of new york city, they said they are tired of the fact that the cops act with -- >> may i ask you a question? do you know what has happened in new york city since stop and frisk, which i always said should have been rebranded meet and greet. stop and frisk. do you know

the new york historical society is doing. yes, i would like for you to comment on that. >> thank you. yes, that question has come up from very early on. and early on, we had members one particular member of congress who said let's just take half of american history and do it on women's history. i think vicki could tell you why internal politics would not allow that to happen. for a goal, it's just not going to happen. because of the way other museums -- from the outside it may seem like a rational goal. it's just not going to happen. because of the way the smithsonian is structured the way other museums are structured. smithsonian has hardly enough space to do american history. in the way that they want to do it. so, they're always jockeying for for order and more space. more space, more space. each museum has all of these stories that they want to tell. and what happened is that with women's history, it just falls to the bottom of the list. and early on, we were in touch with a woman who had been curator at american history

it's not easy in new york city. >> reporter: this may be one of the toughest jobs to get in new york city. this past year more than 90,000 submitted applications to become sanitation workers. the department hires 500 new workers a year. translating to an acceptance of 0.54%, a little over half a per cent. harvard university's acceptance rate is 5.8%. in other words it's harder to become a sanitation worker in new york city that it is to get into harvard. >> when i heard there was 960,000 applicants for the job, it made sense and made me think how hard it is to get a job. >> one reason being a sanitation worker is enticing may be the pay. the starting salary is low - about 34,000. when you factor in overtime, it averages about 47,000 in the first year. after 5.5 years, the salary jumps to 89,000. >> it's not bad, considering the annual pay for transit workers is $78,000. new york city teachers, 68,000, and parks employees, 50,000 per year. and since new york city sanitation workers operate snow ploughs, there's an ample opportunity for overtime. >> when we have a big snow fall we move

new york is a little bit questionable. so from new york down to philly it looks like lesser snow amounts, but still a very dangerous situation because the winds and the white house conditions will still be per sis tent through the overnight. here's a look at the overnight and you can see where that white want of white is that's the heaviest band that is making it through long island. so we are seeing some very heavy snow making its way across lodge island. it's trying to make it into the city, but it's hard because that low is sitting off the coast. temps are in the 20s we do have that cold air locksed in place. the winds are picking up, the visibility is also becoming a concern, we have been seeing that for several hours now, visibility a concern. here's the forecast, 10 to 14 inches likely again the worst of this storm will be overnight until about 10:00 in the morning, still on track for 22 to 26 in boston serge right along the mass pike that's when we could see some of the heaviest and even isolated higher amounts than

mass transit is shut down in boston and new york. the blizzard is expected to last up to 36 hours in some places. kris van cleave is in comack, long island, just east of new york city. kris, good morning. >> reporter: marie, as of 3:00 a.m., the national weather service has recorded more than 15 inches of snow out here on long island. the wind is blowing. the snow, visibility is low, and driving is certainly very treacherous. snowplows faced the brunt of the northeast blizzard overnight as snow and strong winds battered long island. >> the wind and visibility and everything, it's not too good. >> reporter: police in humvees patrolled the snow-covered roads as the nor'easter kicked into gear monday evening, parking itself over the east coast, feeding off the ocean. >> here you can see the spin, right? look at the tail. this moisture plume goes all the way down to basically cuba. there is nothing but a lot of available moisture here. >> reporter: that moisture means snow. forecasters predict up to three feet in some areas. six states h

that's the equivalent of going from new york to los angeles back to new york in the next 12 hours. that's how much snow they have to remove out of the city. shows you even the 15 inches maybe not the 20 or 25 that new york city initially suspected. even then, it's going to be a significant weathermaker. take a look. gray areas show the best light to moderate snowfall. the heavier snow in the white. that's across eastern portions of long island. connecticut into massachusetts. i would say over the next seven ten hours, we'll get moderate snowfall across new york city. certainly could pick up heavy snow. when it's said and done, it's going to be here when it comes to records going down. worcester to boston plymouth cape cod. snowfall around two feet over the regions. the winds also of course a big story. 45 to 55 miles per hour in and around new york city. going to be a major issue. this is category one hurricane force from unanimous tuck tote portions of boston. 75 mile-per-hour gusts are possible. so you put that together with all the foliage, with all the himself across the region
