hank silverberg joins us now live from fairfax county. we are learning a lot more than we every knew before about this shooting tonight. >> reporter: we are -- we ever knew before about this shooting tonight. >> reporter: we are. the chief under a court order released the name of the police officer today. he is adam torres, an eight year veteran of the fairfax county police force and he apparently fired one shot that killed john geer on august 29th of 2013. we're also told that one of the reasons the police hesitated to go in after geer was shot was because they knew he had weapons and when they got inside, they did find eight weapons including one handgun that was loaded and holstered. we're not learning a lot about other circumstances of this like why it took so long to release his name and what may be in his background as part of the investigation. the chairman of the fairfax county board of supervisors indicates yes, it was not good that it took so long. >> this is a unique investigation. this is a unique situation and our board and i

hank silverberg is live outside with more on what we know tonight. hank? >> reporter: well there were 13 members of congress involved in a meeting with the ntsb today to talk about this and also members of the metro board there and when the members of congress in virginia and maryland and d.c. came out they seem to have one theme that is some of the things that went wrong on january 1 should have and could have already been fixed. chief among them is the ventilation system which ntsb chairman christopher hart says had an anomaly in the tunnel ventilation shaft when the third rail sparked sending smoke into the train as hundreds of passengers gasp for air. >> we have tested the ventilation system and noted anomalies that will require further testing. >> that ventilation system and trouble with communications are now a big part of the investigation. >> the only two reassuring things that came out of the meeting was that the interoperability between the district of columbia and the metro first responders is now looking and second, a ventilation system that br

hank silverberg is in the newsroom with the details now. >> a statement from the executive mansion says governor mcauliffe has seven broken ribs and fluid building around his lungs after an accident he suffered while on safari on tanzania back during christmas vacation with his family. the governor was admitted to vcu hospital for a procedure today after doctors identified increased fluid around his lungs. the governor am thrown off a horse while riding in africa on his family vacation. his spokesman says it's not a dire thing and the governor has continued to work since the accident. in fact, he's showed no sign of the injury last week when he made his state of the commonwealth speech which was broadcast live across the state. mcauliffe also attended a martin luther king event this morning in norfolk and did a sitdown interview with local media just hours before he was admitted to the hospital. the spokesman says mcauliffe was uncomfortable the last three weeks and went up for a checkup today and the doctors decided to admit him. the governor's spokesman says mcauliffe should be back i
