meanwhile, firefighters are battling the cold to put out a fire in fairfax county. the fire has already damaged several townhomes there. it's happening in the area between groveton and it's not far from u.s. 1. what's going on at this hour, tom? >> well, firefighters still mopping up here alison. get out of the way and show you. we have three townhomes damaged at all and you can see the one that's most heavily damaged is the one completely in black right now. as of 20 minutes ago flames could still be seen inside. even as i'm speaking i see a small flame inside. don't know if the camera can pick it up. they're putting water on this. unfortunately, one person was injured in this fire. we'll take another look at it now from our helicopter that's overhead here. you'll see another viewpoint of this. one man was inside with burn injuries. we don't know the extent of those injuries at this time. they're still evaluating it is what i'm told. as you can imagine, these are tough conditions for a firefighter to be fighting a fire on. they threw a lot of water on this. water a

this is in the alexandria section of fairfax county. let's take you out live for a live look from chopper 4. we have now learned that the one man who was inside that main townhouse there, he suffered second degree burns, and he's now being medevaced to an area burn unit. firefighters had 75 firefighters on the scene, one of them also suffered some minor injuries. in fact with all the assets they brought in to control this fire it turned into basically what would be a three-alarm fire. one townhome completely destroyed, the damage spread to two other townhomes. they are not having any major problems with freezing hydrants but the firefighters say all that water that is being used on that fire is causing some icing issues in the surrounding streets. so tpw is being brought in to try to salt down some of the streets, so that has now become a big problem as well. but again, one firefighter with slight injuries. another man was in that townhouse with second degree burns. at the live desk i'm chris lawrence. >>> now to a great program in mary

that's straight from the public defender and his fairfax sex assault case. debra alfarone is live at the fairfax county courthouse with the very latest. deb? >> reporter: and lesli, jesse matthews was in court today here on a motion when he is tried for that 2005 alleged sex assault. the judge ended up saying no to the cameras. there may soon be justice for hannah graham and morgan herring ton. in fighting our requests from the other media, the fairfax public defender stated that they are most likely going to be much more serious charges coming. either murder or capital murder charges. it's where the bodies of both hannah graham and morgan herrington were found. he's been linked frenzily to the disappearance. and he's been charged with graham's abduction, but not charged with either victim of murder. the judge here in fairfax ruled against cameras, saying that the statute prohibited them for coverage of sex offenses, but it's what they said that shined a light on what might be next for matthews. we asked the attorney what they thought of that ruling. >> and

>> the breaking news out of fairfax county. we have just learned the name of that police officer who shot and killed this man in springfield. this is back in 2013 in august so about a year-and-a-half ago. the officer's name is adam torres. he's an eight-year veteran of the force, on administrative duty. the report just released says that john gear began to lower his hands during a standoff at his home again, in august of 2013. police have been called out there for domestic dispute. at that point, torres fired a single shot hit gear. gear backed into the home and shut the front door. officers say gear did not respond to their calls, trying to get him some medical help. they eventually broke down that front door and found him dead inside the house. they also found a loaded and holstered gun on the landing of the stairs. that was to gear's left. and seven more firearms also located inside that house. shomari stone is in fairfax county tonight, and will have a live update. >>> jayson werth will be back in court next month to appeal

courthouse here in fairfax. the deadly police shooting took the life of john geer in august of 2013 and only this week are we getting more information about the case that's taken 17 months and a court order for fairfax k police to release the report and name eight-year veteran officer adam torres as the trigger man. police waited an hour for a s.w.a.t. team to arrive before entering geer's home. and dug that time, geer had died. >> it's especially important to come out on a cold day to show people how important this is to us. accountability is a major issue. we still have questions why was he denied medical treatment all that time. why was he shot in the first place. was it an accident? was the officer actually in fear? >> reporter: federal investigators do have an investigation under way at this point, but still a lot of questions still to be answered. geer's girlfriend has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of their two children. we'll have much more coming up at 5:00 tonight. back to you, andrea. >> tha

we're following breaking news from fairfax county. the cold weather caused problems for firefighters putting out a townhouse fire. it started at a home in the area of groveton not far from u.s. 1. firefighters say the cold weather caused the water to freeze once it hit the ground so they had to put down salt. one person was taken to the hospital with burns and the cause of the fire is under investigation. a fairfax county judge has denied a request to allow cameras in the courtroom for jesse matthews' trial. matthews is charged in a 2005 sex assault and attempted murder in fairfax county. he's also charged in the abduction of u.v.a. student hannah graham. her body was found in october and today in court, matthews' attorney suggested it's likely he will also face murder charges there. but the attorney did not elaborate. we're waiting for a big decision from the u.s. olympic committee board of directors. at this hour the board is meeting in denver it's expected to reveal which of four cities had will put forth as its candidates to host

some fairfax county residents are calling for answers in the shooting death of a man by police. residents asked questions during a town hall meeting held this morning a day after fairfax county police released thousands of pages of documents in the case involving john gear. we'll go live to the newsroom for reaction to that document dump. kevin? >> mount vernon has held its annual town hall for some 20 years now. it just so happens this year's came in the wake of fairfax county deciding to dump all of these potentially incriminating documents. and so members of the group justice for john geer attended today's meeting and had one objective in mind. >> a town hall meeting with hard-hitting questions about the shooting death of john geer. it followed a surprise friday evening document dump some 11,000 pages of data detailing why fairfax county officer adam torres shot the unarmed man during an august, 2013 standoff. police also released video of the takedown in addition to audio of torres' internal affairs interview. >> it was justified. i have no doubt about that at all. i don't f
