let's get to mars first. during the next three days you're going to get an update on nasa steppingstone approach to mars from some of the leading experts. nasa's chief scientist. we'll be listening and learning from all of you as you share your thoughts on the best path forward. let me set the stage by reminding us of why we're all here. while humans have been fascinated with mars, since the beginning of time. there are a number of very tangible reasons why we need to learn more about our closest planetary neighbor. for one thing, mar's formaking and evolution is comparable to earth. we know at one time mars had a condition suitable for life. while nasa has been on path to mars for decades. a critical national policy statement in support of our strategy was on april 15th, 2010 during a visit by president obama to the kennedy space center. where he challenged the nation to send humans to an -- an asteroid by 2025. and t omars -- to mars in the 2030's. over the past several years, nasa has been developing the c

we flood mars. these areas would have been underwater, and we see landscapes that reflect some of the signs that you more for clean in the rocks and the landscape to tell us this may have been the case. we are still looking for the shorelines and how that would be reflected in the shape of the planet. we see that. then there is a question of the record of life. on earth we sort of know that, or we think we do. we look back in time to the earliest times of our planet. the planet became at least habitable by the single celled we knowto the world with primitive dna, a few billion years ago, that is recorded in the records. things got better in terms of the atmosphere and more complicated organisms, eventually us came about. think we knowe very simplistically about on earth. we see records of these things recorded in the record on our planet, which is extremely dynamic. could this have happened on mars, and could it have been preserved? if it happened and it's not preserved we can't tell. how do we ask,

can we take advantage of the natural satellites around mars and use those in the mars architecture and use a piece of those for what we are trying to go do? we're looking a lot at high elliptical orbiters. we're starting to take a different approach toward mars than we have before. our classic missions were more apollo style in a way where we launched everything in a campaign in a year. sent the armada of space craft you saw toward mars. i think we're going to do that over a period of years. we need to all start thinking in maybe a different way so it's not a single mission but really is this pioneering aspect. how do we move human presence in? once you are looking at it for the long term then you invest in some things that might actually take longer to do but are more sustainable. >> last word, mike? >> i think what -- you know, well said and we're going to get there this in a sustainable, affordable way and we know the technology is important and that's why we have the investments we have underway and you will continue to see us make those investments over the next 18 months in a num

we are much looser to getting people in mars orbit or flying by mars will stop -- flying by mars. that would be a great long-term goal. it's going to take some technology development. landed a one ton rover on mars which is an amazing accomplishment. one thing we learned from that is landing a five ton lander with crew on board is going to be really tricky and we will need several of those. it is difficult, but it's no more difficult than apollo was when that happened and is probably a lot less difficult. on a scale of hard, it's not quite that hard. >> you have a lot of different companies working on this from nasa to spacex. who's going to get there first? >> i think it's going to be a team effort. spacex have gotten where they have gotten in no small measure by working with nasa, both funding and technical as -- google expertise and have done an amazing job. these public-private order ships are really going to be the key. philanthropy is working with nasa as well as companies working with nasa. >> getting to mars is one thing, but what about getting back? >> if you only go into

to mars in the 20 30's. there is a test vehicle being built in louisiana. we are getting ready to do a test on that five segment solid rocket motor. it utilizes technology we have. it is efficient and cost-effective, utilizing shuttle maintenance -- main engines. we have 18 is stored from the main shuttle program at a space center. the solid rocket motor casings we have left over from the shuttle program. instead of four segments like the shuttle, there will be five segments to get more thrust. the diameter of the liquid core stage, hydrogen, like the space shuttle, is the same diameter as the shuttle external takes -- tanks. they are building a welding facility that will be the next step and they will have everything they need to complete holding -- holding this rocket -- building this rocket. it is phenomenal. at the top is the orion spacecraft. in the apollo era, we transitioned to the shuttle and now we are taking this historic link and transitioning base three to support the space launch. we are doing t

i think we are much closer to getting people within mars's orbit or flying by mars. i think that that would be a great near-term goal. landing on mars will take some technology development. we landed this sort of one-time amazing mars, an accomplishment. one of the things we learned from that was that landing a five-time is -- five-time lander with crew on board would be tricky. it is difficult, but it is no more difficult than of apollo was one of apollo was announced. probably less difficult, actually. on the scale of hard, not that hard. >> you have got a lot of different companies working on this. who is going to get there first? >> i think it will have to be a team effort, you know? spacex has gotten where they have gotten by working with nasa , funding and technical expertise. they have done an amazing job. these public right of art and ships are going to be the key. is working with nasa, as well as the georgia company. >> getting to mars is one thing, what about getting back? go into marsy orbit, getting back is a lot easier. landing on the surface, that is pa
