. >> that was phil klein. the former republican attorney general for the great state of kansas and he was not in that courthouse that day to put away a murderer. he was there because he was on trial. he had been holed up on ethics charges for professional misconduct. and that drama came to an end today when the kansas supreme court finally took away his license to practice law. they took his license and he was the attorney general of that state. the real drama in this case has always been that this phil klein event has been taking place against the backdrop of just incredible violence in kansas. in 1993, this woman walked up to a kansas doctor and she shot him. shot him through both of his arms. he had been attacked before. his clinic had been fire bombeded, but in 1993. they shot him. he came back to work the next day bandaged up. he said he thought it was important to show his face, that he would not be intimidated. the woman who shot him went to prison for shooting him in 1993, but the radical movement saw

. >> reporter: earlier this month, trooper klein was innerly killed when she was hit by a car as she was helped another trooper on the side of the road. along the side of route 100, trooper klein was struck by a car, thrown into the air, through the back windshield of a cruiser. camera's captured the near death experience in september 2012. >> i have been hit by a car. >> reporter: both troopers nearly killed by drivers in violation of the move over law. now state police are cracking down. >> that vehicle is in violation. >> reporter: they are targeting drivers who don't obey the law, requiring drivers to move a lane away from emergency workers. if driver can't get over they must at least slow down. state police made more than 1400 traffic stops. >> 335 were cited for move over violations and there was an additional 481 issued. >> reporter: one driver who was given a warning tells wjz he understands the importance of the law. >> all you got to do is slide over a little bit, be courteous. >> reporter: for troopers it can be the difference between life and death. >> this is almost a la

joining me now, "washington post's" ezra klein, msnbc analys analyst. ezra klein when you run by the numbers quickly, hard for you to land, the cost of shutdown, repeated shutdown, cost of brinksmanship is just astonishing. >> these are huge numbers. we should say this is impressionistic. people are taking their best guess. taking in the data. macro economic advisers number is the interesting one. there you are looking at spending we cut out in the last couple years. a very common thing to look at in addition to looking at, at, a certain policy and index. the thing none of the numbers actually do take into account. this is really important. right? these numbers are about the harm we have caused the economy through bad policy, uncertainty, showdowns, brinksmanship. none deal with the things we haven't done to make the economy better. none deal with things we could accomplish, improve the economy, jobs situation. while we were instead shutting down the government. fighting over premature deficit reduction. that is the other side of this. right. while wash

we set up sort of the story you were telling ezra klein, john boehner's particular weakness as speaker. but i wonder if you could just start out by explaining in a little more detail the news you have today about the republicans sort of shifting towards a grand bargaining strategy maybe? >> the big story on capitol hill. we had speaker boehner go to the white house at 5:30. and according to both my republican and democratic sources, speaker boehner floated a grand bargain of sorts, something to combine the debt limit with the cr, to get a compromise for the deal. and earlier today, speaker boehner met with several republicans in his office and talked about his potential grand bargain. >> so we were just talking about the weakness he has, the basic lack of trust, and the conservative in the house. we think back to the last grand bargain negotiation in 2011 where at the end of the day, john boehner had to sort of walk away from it because he did not have that support from his own members, presumably, this would involve -- if this is real, something republicans pursue, and the democrats a
