the county that it is in in western kentucky is one of the kentucky counties in 2012 in the presidential democratic primary with the sitting democratic president on the ballot that voted for uncommitted. uncommitted care. that's what allison grimes is up against. the association of obama care. at the same time, we say romney won kentucky by 22 point. six of seven statewide officials are democrats. >> i think kentucky and west virginia are two of these states that still have this fascinating, you know, state level democratic hold affinity and then national level republican affinity. and with mitch mcconnell, you know, i do think the relationship with rand paul is fascinating and it is a lesson of just how smart this guy is. as you pointed out, backed rand paul's opponent in 2010 and endorsed him and worked against rand paul. mcconnell realized he had touched on something that mcconnell needed to understand and be part of and actively work to cultivate a relationship with rand paul. he has jesse benton managing his campaign, long-time paul family aide. that's how smart mitch mcconnell is.

why is he so unpopular in kentucky? >> well, it's really kind of amazing. he was elected -- he's been elected five times, and yet his popularity numbers are horrible. even if you grant the fact these are democratic polls that are coming out, there's another one out today by mark mellman who is doing polling for alison grimes that shows grimes up by two points, surging two a two-point lead, but the more important number is at least according to mark mellman who's a very good pollster, mitch mcconnell has a 58% disapproval rating among all -- >> ouch. >> -- kentucky voters. even if you want to, chris, eliminate a few points for, you know, house lean, as they say, still, there's no doubt mitch mcconnell is a very unpopular incumbent, and the reasons are, number one, he's been in washington forever. and that gets to you eventually, especially these days in a time when people have an absolutely sulfurous attitude toward washington and everything about it. number two, mcconnell has tried to have it both ways. some of the time he's talked about how he's brought pr

what kind of kentucky we want to have. there are only two answers to this question, barack obama's vision for america, or kentucky's. you know i -- kentucky to washington and obama crowd and they don't like it. kentucky's voice is often the voice of opposition to the obama agenda. and i'm proud of that. that's why every liberal in america, every liberal in america is out to beat us next year. . >> kentucky. >> look at you, prophetic. >> yeah. >> all right. moving on to other news, this weekend we're going to get our first real look at how the u.s. senate race in kentucky is shaping up. >> there you go. >> both senator mitch mcconnell and his democratic aponent alison lundergan grimes will speak at a picnic in western kentucky. more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the event which unofficially kicks off at the state's political season. if the public polling is to be believed, the race is already in a dead heat. according to a new ppp poll, lundergan grimes has a one-point lead over mcconnell and an internal poll conducted on behalf of lundergan grimes' campaign found the democrat with a two-point lead. since announcing her candidacy, lundergan grimes has come out swinging which may be a reason why the race is already so close. she has warned mcconnell she is not going to be bullied calling the minority leader the, quote, guardian of gridlock and already aggressively campaigning in kentucky's coal country and making a hard push t
