. >> nbc's kristen welker live for us in vancouver, washington. good morning to you. when did investigators think things weren't quite what they appeared? >> well, really, from the beginning, alex. there were a number of red flags in this case. let me just tell you what bethany storro's originally story was. she was walking in downtown vancouver and a woman she didn't recognize, an african-american woman approached her and said, hey, pretty girl, do you want to drink this and threw acid. she told police miraculously she bought a pair of sunglasses 20 minutes before this attack happened and those sunglasses protected her eyes and, therefore, she wasn't blinded. well, police say immediately there were questions. they wanted to know why the acid burns that she had only were on her face and didn't go on to her neck or shoulders, which they say would have happened if some sort of liquid would have been flashed on her. they want to know why she was wearing sunglasses at night. another when bethany canceled an appearance with oprah for this week. police obtained a search war

kristen welker is in hollywood outside of lohan's home. why was lohan let out so soon. that wasn't the case when we all were leaving for work yesterday. >> reporter: that's certainly true, alex. lindsay lohan was let out early because a superior court judge overturned a ruling passed down earlier in the day by a judge in beverly hills. i want to give you a chronology of what happened. first thing yesterday morning lindsay lohan appeared in court on a bench water hearing because she had violated her probation by testing positive for drugs just weeks after she had been released from rehab. well, the judge in that hearing, judge eldin fox, essentially remanded her to court custody, sent her to jail for 30 days without bail. he was basically holding her there until her actual probation violation hearing which is set for october 22nd. lindsay lohan's attorneys appealed that decision and a superior court judge agreed with her attorney saying that because she's only facing misdemeanor charges, she is eligible for bail. so lindsay lohan posted bail late last night, 300,000 bail

nbc's kristen welker joins us from burbank. good morning. i hear you just obtained new information. can you share that with us? >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, alex. i certainly can. we're learning more about what the search is going to look like. officials saying they're going to be out in full force searching for those 13 missing people. but what's interesting is that they're going to be focusing on remote areas in the mountainous regions surrounding palmdale, about an hour north of los angeles. so again, they will be out in full force. we are planning to helicopters and a lot of people on foot trying to recover these people. five adults, eight children, ages 3 to 17, missing. and investigators say they believe they're immigrants from el salvador. they were out last night in palmdale, that's where many of the missing live, searching, trying to recover them. no luck. apparently, two huh husbands -- two husbands of two of the missing women came forward saying they were quite concerned. they brought police a purse. in that purse, cell phones, personal documents, and s

nbc's kristen welker joins us from burbank with the latest. any progress made with investigators looking for these people? >> reporter: no, not yet, alex. and it's certainly a tense situation here in southern california. but we can tell you that investigators will be scouring the wilderness areas surrounding palmdale. that's about an hour north of los angeles. they're really going to be focusing on the remote areas there in that wilderness. they couldn't see those areas when they were searching last night. again, they are looking for 1 people. five adults -- 13 people. five adult, eight children ages 3 through 17. again this all came to their attention yesterday afternoon when two huhs of the missing women came forward to police and said they were concerned about where their family members could be, particularly worried because they found a purse. inside that wupurse, cell phone personal documents, and really disturbing letters. take a listen to how a spokesperson with the sheriff's department described those letters. >> they left behind notes

kristen welker has the latest. >> bethany sorro being charged with three counts of felony theft. now, according to prosecutors, she duped the community which donated $30,000 to help pay her medical bills. last month storro told police that a woman she didn't recognize approached her and threw acid in her face and then admitted to police that her injuries were self-inflicted and the whole ordeal was a hoax. doctors and police were skeptalical of storro's story because her burns were even as if the acid was applied to her face and no splash marks on her body or clothes and no physical evidence at the scene. the arrest warrant states that her burns were self-administered and came from drain cleaner that she purchased at the hardware store. she applied the acid with towels hours before she reported the incident. storro told them she wanted to kill herself but once it realized it wasn't working, she attempted to alter her face. she used $1,500 of the donated money on personal items. >> i don't have to prove that while she was putting the acid on her face that at that time she was thin
