here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: looking at the images of this plane crash today, the mangled seats just part of the fuselage intact, it's hard to imagine anyone could 71 died but remarkably at least six did survive. >> in this particular instance, with all the wreckage that we've seen in the pictures, i would say if it's not miraculous, it's fairly close. >> reporter: last night search and rescue teams frantically working to pull them from the debris. the jet they were on was flying to the colombian city of medellin, going down in the mountains around the airport monday night. among those on board the the chapecoense. it was to be a ju yus trip for the team, headed to a big tournament for the first time. alan ruschel with the beard one of the two players who survived. next to him padilla, a goalkeeper, found alive. he was able to call his family, but then died from his injuries. another tragic story, the death of this 22-year-old player. his family releasing video last week when he learned he would soon be a father. fans of the team now stunned by the loss. and tonight new de

here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: federal investigators tonight revealing the 24-year-old driver of this crushed bus was on a road that was not part of his route. johnthony walker had no trace of alcohol or drugs in his system. he's charged with five counts of vehicular manslaughter. police say the bus was traveling well over the 30-mile-an-hour speed limit when it swerved twice and flipped onto its side, sliding into a tree, killing and 10 years old. as the memorials grow and funerals are scheduled, investigators say they are looking not just at the driver, but the company he worked for, as well. durham school services operates more than 13,000 buses and vans, having about 350 accidents in the past two years. >> our issue is not so much how many accidents that they have, our issue is, what is the rate of accidents, in terms of how many accidents per bus and per driver. >> reporter: last year, the company was given a satisfactory rating, meaning it was in compliance. th t struggling with the nearly unbearable loss. david kerley, abc news, chattanooga. >>> next, the surge in viole

abc's david kerley on what >> reporter: only part of the fuselage of the jet was left intact, having slammed into a hill. through the day, the grim task of recovering the bodies of the 71 onboard who were killed. but remarkably, those six survivors found away from the fuselage. it was to be a joyous trip for the regional brazilian soccer team, the chap a. making a big tournament for the first time in its history. documenting their trip in the airport, then selfies onboard. and the tale of these two players. alan ruschel, able to survive. next to him, danillo padilla, a goalkeeper found alive. he was actually able to call his family, but then died from his injuries. and the heartbreaking story of this 22-year-old player who was killed, his family releasing this video from just last week in their hometown, fans stunned by the loss. the jet, a british aerospace 146, was owned by a charter company. it is often used to get into difficult airports, which this is. abc consultant steve ganyard has flown into that airport. >> even in the daytime, it's a very sporty place, because not only do

here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: even the pilots didn't realize the catastrophic nature of this engine fire. >> go! go! >> reporter: passengers could >> jump and slide. >> reporter: an "uncontained failure," the boeing 767 engine, meaning heavy pieces of metal blew out of it, most likely ripping through the fuel tank in the wing. one piece flew 3,000 feet, going through the roof of a u.p.s. warehouse. it was a part like this that failed, part of the turbine. it spins around 10,000 times a minute inside the engine. a similar part has failed on three other 767s in the past 16 years, breaking into pieces, causing order for airlines to change the way they inspect these parts. but is that enough? >> sometimes this will happen because of fatigue, where an older engine will develop cracks that aren't detected in normal maintenance. sometimes it can be a manufacturing defect. >> reporter: this type of part is never supposed to fail. american airlines has now had two incidents. the airline says it's cooperating with investigators, and can say nothing more. david? >> david kerley with us

abc's david kerley is following that investigation for us this morning. david, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, paula. it is remarkable that we're talking about survivors. this smaller jetliner which was on a very long flight from bolivia all the way up to medellin, colombia. it was near the airport, circling, the crew reported some kind of electrical problem then it disappeared from radar and crashed. on that aircraft was a soccer team, a regional soccer team from brazil, 22 members, 22 journalists. they were going to a tournament there in medellin. we know at least one of the soccer players has survived and crews expected to be at the crash scene later today, paula. >> david kerley i thank you. >>> and classes are resuming at ohio tate university one day after a somali born student drove a car onto a sidewalk and started slashing pedestrians with a butcher knife. 11 people were injured before he was killed by an officer. investigators say moments earlier he posted a facebook message criticizing u.s. attacks on muslims. >>> in politics president-

abc's david kerley is in detroit for us with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. it is going to be a long morning here in detroit. the votes still have not been completely tallied. in fact, about 10% of the votes still out here in the middle of the morning and the folks at the county clerk's office told me in wayne county here in detroit they didn't finish until 5:00 to get all these votes counted but currently donald trump in a surprise ahead in this traditionally blue state and the exit polls show some very interesting things that have happened in this election day. in the rural areas, 27% of the vote comes from those rural areas. that's up from 19% from the last cycle. so you're seeing an 8% increase in rural voters who came out. and it appears that hillary clinton according to the exit polls is underperforming among african-americans in the detroit area. diane and kendis. >> all right, that's david kerley for us from detroit. david, thank you. >>> just ahead we heard donald trump say it's time to heal

david kerley, abc, washington. >> unbelievable. david, thank you. flames that have ripped through eastern tennessee. >>> wildfires in and around gatlinburg have destroyed 20 square miles. look at the flames here. they're being blamed for three deaths. 14,000 people have been evacuated, but the neighboring nearby dollywood resorted has been spared. kelly ranke of knoxville, tennessee station has the latest. >> reporter: the scene calmer, no longer a red glow in the mountains. we finally got to see the devastation that the wildfire has left. the mayor of siever county telling us three people have died in this fire, 14 people injured, but we they do have rescue operations underway. do not know the extent of those injuries. people going house to house, going to some of the homes they were not able to get to. the governor telling us in a press conference that this is the worst fire tennessee has seen in 100 years. and some of our crews got to see why going to some of these neighborhoods where their homes are completely gutted. there are about 700 people

david kerley is in washington with what you can do to protect yourself on the road. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. you're right. there was accidents over the weekend. in arizona -- >> a single vehicle wrong way driver into a greyhound bus. >> reporter: the wrong-way driver was killed. more than a does on the bus injured. zh one benefit is the weight of the bus. and the impact at the that bus is able to take on. >> reporter: a college football play nor massachusetts killed going the wrong way thanksgiving. and sunday, two killed on long island. five deadly accidents over the holiday. captured on video. vehicles on the wrong side of the road speeding. while wrong-way crashes make up only 3% of accidents, they're 27 times more deadly, says one study. between 300 and 400 deaths a year. nearly 60% of the accidents involve drivers who have been drinking. what can you do? >> stay out testify fast lane. stay in the middle lanes or the right lane ifs you can. if it's a two-way highway, be alert. look >> reporter: there are calls to change the way road

>>> let's turn to david kerley standing by reagan national airport where it sounds like there was a scary moment in the sky on monday, david. >> reporter: yeah, it was a very scary moment, michael. a couple of pilots took evasive action thinking they saw a drone and injured two of their own flight attendants. the investigation this morning into what the pilots of a plane with 54 passengers on board saw coming towards them, leading to their severe action. the pilots making a sharp two flight attendants thrown in the cabin and injured. once on the ground the pilots said they thought it was a drone coming towards them. >> they see a flash. they see something at an altitude where they would not expect another airplane or something to be flying. and sharp turn to get away from whatever it is. attendants were treated and released in toronto. already this year, pilots' sightings of drones are up 40% compared to all of last year. >> we almost got hit by a drone. just to let you know. >> reporter: the worry what happens if it hits a passenger plane. i'm just hovering. there are several efforts lik
