so was sanders himself. we were at the hotel where his staff was celebrating last night, obviously, down at the bar cheering, drinking. this was a campaign that went from being in the mild day of a slog that was kind of a difficult thing, every day put one foot in front of the other to being a campaign that was really exciting again. i think you saw a little bit of to from senator sanders on the stage tonight. he was a little bit back in his element after last weekend's debate in flint when hillary clinton went after him for his vote on the auto bailout. or that piece of the wall street bailout that included money that helped the auto industry. so he clearly came you know, ready to throw some punches her way. i think he saw that particularly on undocumented immigration. as far as you know, the children who are coming across the border from honduras and other places. so it's pretty clear to me that the sanders campaign is in a place where they are re-energied in a place where there are delegates. and we saw h

bernie sanders is getting 45% of the delegates. but she hopes to win the nomination when we move west. huge delegates. she hopes to win it. i'll say fair and square. with pledge delegates. if senator sanders can win, if he can -- this would change the dynamic of the race. that may bend the arc that makes everything different. this guy is for real. let's think again. if he cannot do this and she can win either one of those or both of those, remember, she has this. sanders campaign doesn't like when we talk about this. these people can change their mind. but you have nearly 500 superdelegates, elected and appointed officials who get a vote at the convention have publicly endorsed secretary clinton. this doesn't count until the convention. that's true. they don't really count if she clinches on her own pledge delegates. if she has momentum in the race and is doing this, winning african-americans and latinos and industrial battlegrounds, they'll stay with her and then the lead becomes insurmountable. to get this number to dwindle and m

sanders really didn't expect to win. take a listen. >> i want to thank the many thousands of volunteers that we had in the state of michigan for knocking on doors, and for making the phone calls that created this kind of enormously successful night for us. >> hastily called no big acceptance speech, no rally, especially for a victory of this magnitude. how did so many people get it so wrong? >> well, there is a question on why the pollsters got it wrong. but going forward, the sanders campaign can discount any polls for the next few weeks. i think what we're seeing here is that -- two things. african american voters behaved slightly differently in the north than the south. he got about a third of the african american vote in michigan. if he could get those kind of numbers in the south we will be in a different position. and the core white constituency of the democratic party has moved very far to the left. this is not bill clinton's democratic party. hillary clinton just cannot compete with bernie sanders on those econom

democratic candidates, hillary clinton and bernie sanders. good night from green bay. >>> so welcome to back to back front-runners night. chris matthews just hosted that town hall event in wisconsin with the republican party's front-runner donald trump. in a moment, we have my interview with the democratic party's front-runner hillary clinton. she was in new york to do this event you see here at the apollo theater in harlem. let me just give you a peak behind the curtain here. let me be honest with you, show you how things go behind the scenes with these things. because i think it's going to explain a little bit about what you're about to see. this was hillary clinton's rally today in harlem, big long line of people to get in to see her. people all dressed up, and her name up on the marquis at the apollo theater. you can see some bernie people across the street from the theater. meanwhile, while that was all happening, me and my crew, we're all inside the apollo, backstage in the offices there, prepping last minute questions and research for

a steeper hill for bernie sanders. it's closer to 43% because she has a bunch of superdelegates in her back pocket. if she wants to win it with the pledge delegates has to keep doing what she's doing. here's where we are today. this is what is so striking after the weekend. ted cruz, 87 delegates behind donald trump. that's an advance that has him saying this is a two-man race. rubio at 149 thanks to puerto rico, he needs to do something to change the map. let's look at it. this is tomorrow. if you bring in all the states. if donald trump sweeps, of course they'll say we're back in business and they'll start to stretch out the delegate. let's watch michigan. see who wins. trump's favored in the polls. watch mississippi. could be bltd for ted cruz. trump is favored there. if cruz can pull off an upset in mississippi and come close in michigan, could change the delegate map. every candidate hits some speed bumps, we're okay. look ahead to march 15th. kasich wins at home and rubio wins at home, even if that's all they get

bernie sanders voted against the violence against women act. those were provisions in the bill as the secretary indicated. in that bill there was good provisions. i have been a fierce fighter against domestic violence ever since i was mayor in burlington. violence against women act has protected millions of women. it was in that bill. the ban on assault weapons. that's what i have fought for my whole life. it was in that bill. now, what you are reading, though, is i went to the floor, as i recall, and that's what i said. i tried to get the death penalty aspects in that bill out. secretary clinton and i have a disagreement. i was then and i am now opposed to the death penalty. so to answer your question, what you read was a congressman who was torn, who said there are good things in that bill, there are bad things overall, i voted for it. but where we are right now is having 2.2 million people in jail, more than any other country on earth. this is a campaign promise. at the end of my first term, we will not have more people in jail than any othe

senator sanders? for miss wade specific. >> what is going on is a disgrace beyond belief. as president of the united states this is what i would do. is if local government does not have the resources, if state government for whatever reason refuses to act, children in america should not be poisoned, federal government comes in, federal government acts. [ applause ] what is absolutely incredible to me is that water rates have soared in flint. you are paying three times more for poison water than i am paying in burlington, vermont for clean water. first thing you do is you say people are not paying a water bill for poison water. [ applause ] and that is retroactive. second of all, to ease anxiety, cdc has got to come in here and examine every child and adult in this community in terms of the amount of lead they may have. [ applause ] thirdly, in the wealthiest country in the history of the world we have got to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, our water systems. i've got a bill for a trillion dollar

sanders wins in the end. and they think inside his campaign that it's because he's appealing to white working class voters who are upset about clinton supporting international trade deals, for example. and basically no one gave him a chance of winning, so he's excited. watch. >> i just want to take this opportunity to thank the people of michigan who kind of repudiated the polls that had us 20, 25 points down a few days ago who repudiated the pundits who said that bernie sanders was not going anywhere. >> the key for sanders is he has to replicate this next tuesday as you were talk about. he has other midwestern battle grounds like illinois and ohio. and if he again can tap into those white working class voters, he's going to give clinton some heartburn next tuesday as well, shep. >> in the main, though, she's getting a lot of delegates. >> reporter: yeah. you think about the margin. she didn't just win in mississippi, she slaughtered bernie sanders. in large part because of the edge she has with african-amer

senator sanders voted against that. it seems like he's campaigning more on the side of mitt romney, who said let detroit go bankrupt. >> go ahead, jonathan. >> i'm holding up a card which is a union card. i'm a member of the united autoworkers. i've been a member for 25 years. and i would not support a candidate that was not a solid uaw supporter that was behind workers all the way. he was for the auto bailout and "the washington post" essentially called the clinton campaign a liar or misrepresenting saying it seems like she's willing to take the gamble that fact checkers may call her out for her tactics but voters won't. the reason they're making this emphasis, jake, is because she has supported bad trade agreements, nafta and all those trade agreements that have destroyed the lives of working people, autoworkers in michigan, ohio, for many, many years. that's really the achilles heel. let's debate those trade issues. those are the things that have hurt middle class americans, working class americans in ohio and partic

jane sanders, first lady of vermont -- >> first lady of the sanders campaign. >> first lady of the sanders campaign, college president in her own right, traveling separately from her husband was approached tonight after the good news arrived that her husband had won michigan. >> jane sanders, you just walked into this hotel room here having learned -- you got stuck on a plane and weren't able to be here for the results, but you saw them on the plane. your reaction. >> we were excited to see it. a cancelled plane turned into a deplayed plane and the third plane got us here now. >> you were on the phone with him. what's his mood like right now having unexpectedly winning michigan. >> pretty happy. >> what's next? you are in many ways not just his spouse, but also a close political advisor. what's your view of where this campaign goes from here reque? >> i think he has a winning campaign and he has a message that the more people see him, the more they get to know him, the more they like him. so every bit of time we have we're out on the campaign trail and he's got a whole bunch of things happ

she has to deal with the hard-core bernie sanders sanders. at the same time, i want to say, the tone has been nasty sometimes coming from hillary clinton. she accused hum of supporting the minute men militia. she's accused h ed him of some stuff. i hope both sides can keep it as civil as possible. >> angela, what do you make of tone? >> this tone has been a cakewalk this season compared to 2008 in the party. so i don't that's been as aggressive at all. i thought it was interesting that tone would even come out to play for a potential debate. the more opportunities they have to get out there and talk about the distinctions in their positions, the better. whether or not bernie sanders stays in and is pulling off a miracle and becoming the democratic nominee, there's more opportunity they have to vet his positions as well as for hillary clinton. she needs to get her positions out there. >> angela rye and van jones, thank you. >>> what we're learning about the suspect shot by police inside the visitors center of the u.s. capitol after he appeared

bernie sanders, for bernie sanders, look at this, clean sweep. he would top all three of the leading republicans, trump, rubio and cruz. not rosey for hillary clinton. she would only meet donald trump in a head to het. donald trump responded to our bowl on abc's's good morning america. >> i haven't even focused on hillary clinton yet. i can tell you the one person she doesn't want to run against is me and i have that on good knowledge. i will defeat hillary. we'll take a lot of democrats and a lot of independents away. we'll possibly win places like michigan, new york, states that are not even in consideration. by wait, these aren't things that have been taken things in the poll. i will beat hillary clinton much more easily than anybody else. >> one on the sanders poll, consistent all year, that sanders has done better than hillary clinton against high thetd cal republicans. it hasn't really helped them much with electability in the democratic primary. but, you know, i have to say, trump has a point here in terms of how these polls, the track rec

super excited to have senator sanders here tonight. we have spoken on this show twice with former secretary of state hillary clinton, bernie sanders his opponent we have spoken with her twice since we have last spoken with senator sanders. so we've been really eager to get him back on this show and his campaign made it happen for us today. super exciting. particularly at what feels like a real cross roads moment in the democratic race, senator bernie sanders will be here live in just a couple of minutes. there was an epic washington showdown today on the flint water crisis as a big national audience tuned in to see michigan governor rick snyder get absolutely grilled about flint by democratic members of the congressional oversight committee today while republican members of that same committee basically complimented his tie color and brushed his hair. it was alternately riveting and super weird at that hearing today. we'll have a report on that coming up later on tonight. >>> but we have to start tonight with what else, nazi prison tat

sanders, let me start with this. there was another example this weekend of some really upsetting violence at a trump rally. a trump supporter beating up a protester. he was arrested. and this comes in the wake of a lot of protests, the road block to an event. there are some commentators who are saying, as responsible as donald trump is for what is happening at his rallies, that the protest efforts at those rallies, the blockages, are essentially playing into his hand. what do you think of that? >> well, look, i think, you know, that trump has been incredibly divisive. i think he has insulted almost every group in america. i think his policies are outrageous. but in america, people have a right to hold rallies. i think my own feeling is, is it absolutely appropriate for thousands of people to protest at a trump rally, but i am not a great fan of disrupting rallies. people want to be outside, they want to talk about his attacks on mexicans, his outrageous attacks on muslims, on women, on african-americans, that is abso

sanders calls him a pathological liar. of course, this is all happening a day before voters head to the polls in five states. a day that could entirely reshape the presidential race. all eyes on those crucial winner-take-all republican primaries of florida and ohio. in those two states, our new nbc/"wall street journal"/marist poll shows trump ahead in florida, but governor john kasich with a narrow lead in ohio. our political team is ready to go across the country this morning. let's get right to hickory, north carolina, where jacob rascon is with what we expect a donald trump along with new jersey governor chris christie, jacob? >> yeah, he's going to be here any minute. of course, governor christie as well, you said. this is a smaller town hall tile event. only about 1,000 people can fit into this auditorium. the big question this morning going into tomorrow is what will the voters think of what happened this weekend. and in the short term, it doesn't seem as it hasn't in the past, that this is going to have any effect
