a sweep for hillary clinton and the democratic party. to the republican race, almost as neat and tidy for donald trump. projected winner by a big amount in florida, but then along came the governor of ohio, john kasich who sparked all kinds of conversation tonight by being the outlier. otherwise, it was all trump all the time. five states, he got four of them. illinois, north carolina and not too long ago, the apparent winner of missouri. what a night in american politics. >> and, you know, we wait to see what this means in terms of the math, in terms of the march to the nomination on both sides but it's inescapable. this is an unexpectedly huge night for hillary clinton. we didn't think tonight would be determinative. i think the way i put it on my show yesterday -- was that yesterday, it feels like so long ago. i guess two days ago, no reason to think of tonight as determinative. unless something crazy happens and one of these candidates sweeps all five races. the caveat, it was close enough in illinois and missouri so the delegate cou

now while he obviously has to beat hillary clinton to get there, hillary clinton has kind of already started to pivot toward donald trump. she's already started to talk about that match-up there. if bernie sanders is trying to kind of remind people that while he lost on tuesday, he stem can win this and we ran a piece just this week that said, you know, even though bernie sanders had a really bad tuesday, in some ways if he really sweeps and really wins by a large margins in these states coming up, kind ofs a danny said, he could still be in this race. up with of the things he's trying to do is remind people that there's a long way to go and that if he needs to, he can kind of step up that negative attacks. it's interesting to me because he made this comment that said even though i've never run a negative ad in my life i'm going to make an exception to donald trump. what he's trying to tell people is one of the things that hess really been struggling with his electability and people are wondering if he can handle donald trump and he's trying to tell people, yes, i can. >> you look at

hillary clinton, 27. this was a caucus, move to alaska. look at this, bernie sanders breaking 80% in alaska. an 82-18 romp. again, a caucus state, and the thirty state on saturday, also a caucus state. also a sanders' landslide. 70-30 in hawaii. so three state s on the board saturday. three enormous sanders' victory. what does that do to the bottom line question. you just heard sanders say he believes his calculations are they can catch hillary clinton in the pledged delegate race. that is this column right here. he says allocated, we say pledged. that means these are the delegates awarded in the primaries and in the caucuses. there's obviously been a lot of talk about the super delegates, the elected officials, the party leaders that get automatic votes. these are not locked in, so the sanders' theory of this race has been if they can get ahead of her in the pledged delegates, these super delegates will have no choice but to switch allegiances. the question in this race is can bernie sanders make up enough ground and catch hillary clinton

a clean sweep for hillary clinton. five for five last night and now a delegate lead over bernie sanders that looks insurmountab insurmountable. let's take another look at those results last night. clinton has strong showings as expected in florida and north carolina. she won hand dilly in ohio. a state bernie sanders had been hoping to beat her in. she engineered razor thin in illinois and particularly razor thin in missouri. she beat bernie sanders by less than 2,000 votes in the show me state. for the night clinton has so far picked up 363 delegates. that number may tick up as more results are tabulated. sanders, 282. that gives clinton more than a seven delegate lead when you factor in the super delegates. let's go to arizona. that's one of three states holding contests next tuesday. msnbc's casey hunt is in phoenix. where we heard from a very subdued sanders last evening. sanders was hoping for a great scenario to win three. instead they win zero. how do they pick up the pieces this morning? >> reporter: it was a r

this is a state not a slam dunk for hillary clinton. here with me now is the former long time press secretary to three-term new york city mayor michael bloomberg. that's redundant. anyway, on the democratic side these numbers are surprising. we've seen polls that had hillary clinton by 30 points in new york. she won here twice, sanders within 12. how much trouble is she in in new york? >> it's concern ing, it's not catastrophic, she's up by 12 and down 14 among people who say they are very liberal. obviously know people who more liberal are more likely to vote in the democratic primary and have a real tendency in new york to vote against the establishment candidate. the establishment candidate, christine quinn, city council speaker would have been the first openly gay mayor and helped run the city for a long time. probably more qualified than any candidate in our lifetimes. does this sound familiar? >> that dynamic, how bill de blasio got elected -- >> whom whom every supported and -- a real scare the next year, two years ago running fo

if hillary clinton wins, but the other way around, how would you explain it? >> well, ohio is always been a clinton state. it's been a state that hassle vated centrist democrats. she is expected to win here, because this is a state where she has done well. she won here over barack obama in 2008. however, we do have a fair amount of democrats in the state who have been voicing dissatisfaction with the lack of progressive momentum in their party. so there are many people who are hoping that bernie sanders can perform as well as he did in michigan here. it will be very close i think. >> the same pattern of bernie support, college kids, young people across the board, and older white people that don't have a college degree? is it the same bernie sanders vote? >> yeah, i think that's probably true. we're also seeing, though, some progressives who are very well educated, cincinnati and columbus, there are some very -- >> philosophical. >> exactly. people are saying they're disappointed in hillary clinton in being more of a centrist democratic, a more progressive voic

that really works in hillary clinton's favor. so senator sanders not only has to pull out some wins in some of these bigger states, he has to win by significant margins. and that's what he hasn't yet demonstrated that he's cape blg of doing. he, of course, pulled off the surprise win in michigan. his adviser feel as though wisconsin is particularly friendly territory because it has a really progressive history. and the polling shows a relatively close race there. the test is going to be many of those northeastern states that come afterward. in particular, as you mentioned, new york state. it's something that both sides of this really are focusing on as a bellwether, as a turning place, as a place that could be a fulcrum for the race if senator sanders is able to make some inroads and beat hillary clinton in her own state. that would be pretty significant. on the flip side, clinton's people are relatively confident this is a place that she knows very well, public polling shows she has a wide lead. she, of course, won the senate ra
