carson's team claims the cruz campaign spread rumors that carson had dropped out of the race. it followed a report that carson would be taking a break and going to florida. cruz is now apologized to retired neurosurgeon. james astle in johnson iow, iowa, tonight. what headlines do you see coming out of iowa? >> this is not a normal election finish in america. about 60 of the vote on the republican side went to ted cruz, donald trump, and ben carson, and yet what we saw was normal politics reasserting itself after such a strange unconventional campaign. i think the ground game of ted cruz really did put donald trump and some of his inflated predictions for himself rather back in his box, and what was perhaps most striking of all for me was the late serge by marco rubio to some extent united the somewhat conservative main treatment republican vote and took some votes off of donald trump, it would seem. >> is this a surface wound or is it fatal? >> we can't say it's fatal. he moves on to new hampshire, where he has an enormously strong lead. that is likely to be cut back a little

ben carson. sir, how are you? >> doing well, sean. thank you. >> you had a respectable double digit finish in iowa. last night didn't go the way you wanted. do you see for yourself a path where you believe you can win the nomination? >> absolutely. you know, i still have millions of supporters. on facebook. we have a lot of people who continue to make donations and they're saying, please, please, please, please don't drop out. please stay in because your strong states are coming up. and i believe that to be the case. i believe you will see a significant improvement right here in south carolina. and that the more times we have an opportunity to get in front of audiences and actually explain what our policies are, it makes a huge difference. >> okay. there is some that have questioned your decision after iowa. it's not just about going back to florida and changing your clothes which we know became a big deal. but then you went to washington and you didn't get back into new hampshire if i'm correct until, what, thursday after the monday

but cruz and carson aren't that tight these days given what happened in iowa so i don't know when carson will leave. >> matt, what's your take on that? >> cruz and carson did meet in a broom closet sue posedly so who knows. that's the irony, people who ostensibly should be friends, should be in the same lane, end up hating each other because they are competing for the same donors. that's the irony, the more similar you are to somebody, the more likely you are to end up hating them. i think a couple things. one, if it looks like john kasich is going to lose ohio, i think he has to get out before ohio happens. because it will be very embarrassing as the sitting governor of ohio to lose it. that's one ray of hope if you're marco rubio, that he gets out. yes, the problem is the only way to beat trump is if you can get it down to a one-on-one contest. i think trump has a ceiling that's below 50%. but unless that happens, and everyone has an incentive to stay in. so trump, it looks like, i mean, he's clearly the front-runner and very likely the nominee. >> it's hard to get -- >> go ahead, glor

ben carson said he couldn't hear anything back there. >> applause from other candidates were drowning out the names. >> turned out to be a solid debate. moderate bid david muir and martha and mary katherine hamm making a contribution. you look at this coverage of this whole campaign. at the beginning you had the press sort of mocking him. declaring jeb bush was the obvious front-runner. scott walker was a front runner in iowa for a while. bernie sanders was treating this as a joke. and only lately did the media establishment seem to notice, discover, almost anger and frustration out there. have you ever seen a worse performance? >> i must say, we are sailing in unchartered seas. and nothing, you know, in my experience as a reporter going back many years prepared me for what donald trump has been able to do. now i knew because i'm on twitter. twitter is a great early warning system for journalism and anybody else looking for major sent. . i knew about the level of anger and distrust of the republican establishment, if you will, the senior republicans in washington and elsewhere. i neve
