that is the stance the white house takes. the president said it here and this was in relationship to both yemen and russia, it's not as if we are going to send in troops every time something like this happens. the alternative to sanctions and working diplomatically would be massive u.s. military deployments indefinitely. he pretty much settled the question about wthat, that the u.s. is not going to get involved militarily in all of these conflicts and the white house obviously feels that would be a disaster for the u.s. to do that. then you look what is the alternative to that? well, it's going to continue to be things like sanctions and attempts at diplomacy. when you look what is going on on the ground in crimea it makes everybody nervous and russia and ukraine's neighbors on edge and it makes the u.s. worried about what is going to happen in terms of u.s. influence and what is going to happen to that part of the world where so many of our allies are. >> michelle, thank you so much. we appreciate you. you are following the

and that's what we're hearing from the white house. that they want to focus on what the positives are. but at the same time, they're kind of saying the opposite. we heard the press secretary talk about the definite areas of compromise where things can get done in this congress. these are hardly controversial issues like infrastructure. although at times they can be. but other areas like tax reform, closing some loopholes, working together on education. things like that where we've seen them come together and work with the president in the past, sort of wanting to focus on, let's see what we can do first off. at the same time, the press secretary said, if the congress isn't going to work on the progress that the president wants to make, then he is going to act alone wherever he can, foreshadowing more executive action. >> and we'll be hearing shortly from the president. he has a meeting with the mexican president. there's going to be a photo opportunity, is that right? >> reporter: right. he's certain to be thrown some questions. not su

we wanted to hear the white house's thoughts on yemen. is the white house evacuating the u.s. embassy in yemen. >> first of all, there is nothing more important to the president than the safety of u.s. people. the president is receiving regularly -- regular updates from his national security team here at the white house so no decision has been made to announce yet. >> we just had senator angus king on our air on "new day." he said that the time is now to evacuate because he's worried that there could be a hostage crisis. how concerned is the white house and why not just do it right now? >> well the president is very concerned, but that's his decision to make and he'll make it in consultation with both folks on the ground and his national security team. >> what's the reason not to evacuate? >> well having a presence there is very important. that's a very important region and the work that they're doing, that is key to our agenda and so it's -- many of the people who serve, and it's an important point to make in our embassies all across the world are at risk. we are very gratefu

this is a question we asked the white house repeatedly when we asked the white house about this march this week who from the white house is going and if no one is going as we started to suspect why not? the white house simply would not answer that question. finally over the weekend they put out information not quite answering that but saying there was u.s. embassy staff present and deeply engaged with the french who say they appreciate and there are often serious security concerns when the president attends something like this. that security piece may be the most telling part of what the white house has said. you have to consider there were dozens of other world leaders who did attend. it is possible the president didn't want to go to this event in paris when he didn't go to ferguson missouri or funerals of slain police officers or possibly for whatever reason did not fit into the schedule. there's also this summit count ering violence at home that never happened and never mentioned again. something we asked the white house about repeatedly whatever happened to this summit are you sti

let's go live to cnn senior white house correspondent jim acosta. jim, this raises very serious safety and security questions. what can you tell us? >> reporter: absolutely. we were able to reach that drone operator today over the phone. while he isn't saying much about what happened at the moment his crash landing at the white house has served as a wake-up call to the rest of washington. cnn has learned the man who crashed a small drone at the white house earlier this week lives just blocks away from 1600 pennsylvania avenue. that means the tiny quadcopter only had to fly less than ten blocks a straight shot from the man's apartment to reach the white house. one possible explanation experts say is the drone signal lost contact with the operator and ran into trees while trying to return home. the operator identified as a man who works for the top secret national geospatial intelligence agency declined to comment on reports that he was intoxicated while flying the drone. in a brief phone call with cnn, he said i can't really speak right now, i hope y

the invitation is ruffling feathers at the white house, let's bring in white house correspondent michelle kosinski she is live there tell us the latest. >> well republican congressional leadership in a press conference said two words -- hell no, they won't be stopped by what president obama wants to do. and this is being called a drama, a snub a foreign policy confrontation. that republicans reached out to the israelis and invited the prime minister benjamin netenyahu, to address a joint session of congress in february. he accepted. but all of this completely bypassing the white house. the white house said they haven't heard from the israelis at all and it is a departure from protocol as to what a world leader generally does before visiting another country. house speaker john boehner says netenyahu will discuss the threats posed by iran and radical islam. this comes at a time when some in congress including some democrats, want to impose more sanctions on iran as iran continues to delay in the negotiations over its nuclear program. the white house has said that they will veto additional s

tom, the airspace over the white house is restricted. flying drones is illegal in the district of columbia. surely agents have a plan to stop a drone from getting onto the grounds. >> i don't know if anybody has a plan for this type of operation. specifically to prevent it. it is illegal. obviously if somebody does it there will be an investigation to figure out who did it. we've had these various plots and as the drones become more plentiful and more models economically available to the public i mean you can buy one of these for anywhere from about $50 to $4,000 to $5,000. you may recall the fbi plot thwarted in 2011 when an individual purchased a model jet fighter drone that would carry explosives and fly that into the dome. he was going to open fire on everybody that came pouring out of the capitol building once that drone had struck the capitol dome. the plan fell apart fortunately because when he recruited fellow shooters the fbi was able to penetrate him and get that uncovered and thwarted. this is something -- there's been several

cnn's michelle kosinski is at the white house. good morning, michelle. >> reporter: much has been made of this argument. it's really been sort of sweeping headlines especially around the internet. david cameron would love for google and instagram and snapchat to share more information from authorities when they try to investigate terror. in britain he can ask entities to do that and by law there they need to comply. if an american company even though it has people online in britain were to do that that would violate u.s. law. the british are now wanting to talk to president obama about what maybe could be done about this especially as regards encryption. it's very easy to make an argument for privacy in this case but the fbi agrees with david cameron to some extent and they have this very compelling quote this week that said well if you're going to go along with that argument should we make a car trunk that can never, ever be opened by a police officer during the course of an investigation or how about somebody's apartment. those

on that note, we also heard from the white house early this morning back in september, the white house announced that they would be holding a summit on countering violent extremism. they were going to originally hold that summit in october, but then it got pushed off, and this morning, they announced that meeting will be happening on february 18th, and i want to read part of the announcement to you. the white house says "our partners around the world are actively implementing programs to prevent violent extremism and foreign terrorist fighter recruitment. the summit will include representatives from a number of partner nations focusing on the themes of community engagement, religious leader engagement and the role of private sector and tech community." so obviously, jake, a lot of meetings happening, brainstorming to prevent these attacks that are going to continue and trying to find some way to stop it. jake? >> erin mcpike, thank you so much. we appreciate it. i'm standing right here at place de la republique, and a police helicopter just passed by, and the crowd started applauding,
