by the federal government for road production was the national road that extended from cumberland, maryland, to wheeling, virginia. and one of the reasons for that was ohio had become a state in 1803. the country was moving west. we need to find a way of tying these new western areas in with the capital. and the easiest way of doing that in the early 19th century was to put in a road. so that road will eventually extend from baltimore westward into cumberland, maryland, uniontown, washington, pa, and then in 1818 it comes here to wheeling. when it comes here to wheeling that will give this community which at that time is about 50 years old -- it gives it the real spurt it needs to grow. over the next 20 to 25 years the population of wheeling will almost triple. wheeling starts as an outpost on the frontier. that river was the western extent of the united states in the 1770's. it's going to be a very small community. most of the buildings will be made out of logs and some kind of lumber. as we move into the 19th century and people move west, wheeling will start to grow because this is what s

snow falling in maryland d.c. and virginia. richard jordan is live in woodbridge. >> reporter: here the snow has been steady. but it hasn't been heavy. so it hasn't amounted to much. but let me show you something we've been talking about all morning. the difference between the treated and the untreated surfaces here at this parking lot, you can see this area where the pavement is clear, that has been treated. but these parking spaces that are empty now have not been treated. and that's why you've got this light coating here it's not much but you can see it is sticking to the surface here. so that will be the difference between what is treated and untreated. on the brighf t roads, at least the major roads, have been treated. so they're looking clear. it's the side roads, the sidewalks, the parking lots like this one here where you will see that coating, that dusting of snow. and as more people try to walk on it and move around that of course gets packed in and could be a little slippery. so that's what you need to watch out for.

i did just check, maryland reports the road temperatures innish temperatures on most roads in maryland are above freezing. that's good news. as this wintry mix moves in around 5:00 tonight, initially we'll only deal with wet, not slick, conditions. the numbers on the map are the temperatures. i want you to notice as this moves in most temperatures are above that freezing mark. as we work our way, though into the evening hours, our temperatures do start to drop. 7:00 p.m. starting to see temperatures around freezing. gaithersburg not far behind. washington still at 36 not supporting a lot of accumulation. a rain and snow mixture overnight and throughout the morning hours tomorrow could be heavy rain in parts of southern maryland off on to the eastern shore. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, that rain and snow mix continues. as this event comes to an end around 1:00 p.m. we'll continue to track rain and snow, and that includes inside of the beltway. so here's what you can expect tomorrow. how hour-by-hour planner. 7:00 a.m. rain/snow mix. temperature around 34. not supporting a lot of accumula

as the system moves closer, western maryland, northern maryland by 6 p.m., starting to see a little rain/snow mix. the main event rise -- arrive sunday while we are sleeping. 7:00 monday morning, snow across most of the region. the purple is an indication of possibility of sleet. further south, fredericksburg, southern maryland, might be more in the way of rain, but still impacting the monday morning commute. police say the shooting happened at a home yesterday clinton maryland. they say the shooting stemmed from a fight between two d bs and a 17-year-old boy. one of the teens is in critical condition. the two other teens have minor injuries after the shooting which police say again stems from that fight. the neighbors telling us they heard those gunshots. >> we panicked. we were scared. we went right back in the house. we didn't know where it was coming from. and we seen the helicopters. so we just took precaution an went in the house. pa sure everybody was okay. >> right now it is still unclear whether the teens were shot inside or outside the house. >>> if you're planning on taking the express lanes on i-95 there a good chance you'll be car pooling. trans urban says more and more people are car pooling to work so they don't have to pay a toll. that could cost taxpayers because the contract the state signs says it will pay transces oig over a limit on that rides. we could leas sometime in the next few weeks. >>> i'm is 5:51. time to get a check of weather a
