but isn't pot legal in colorado you ask? >> in colorado, a legal fight over pot is pitting a man against his former employer. companies can still fire employees for using medical marijuana, even in states where it's now legal. but as carol mckinley reports, one man wants to change that. >> if there ever was a test case for someone needing medical marijuana, brandon coates is it. >> i will grab a pinch. >> there's no way for him to do it without somebody. he needs someone's hands. >> when he was 16, a car accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, except for the use of his right arm. >> they were trying to make me comfortable. >> now 35, he depends on his nurse, to drett him and feed him and to help him smoke pot every night to ease his debilitating pain. >> i wouldn't be able to work. >> but his weed use upended his life. five years ago coates took a random drug test and failed and was fired from his service job at dish network. >> i had this job for three years, and that's how i was paying my bills and i lost it. in my

but isn't pot legal in colorado, you ask? >> i took the chance to get out of that prison camp and with a few others went out to work in another camp. >> mary ann yakabi reads her father's words about his time here at the kooskia internment camp in north idaho. it housed just 265 inmates, all male, mostly volunteers from other camps. >> it was the only camp of its kind in the united states, it was really kind of an experiment... is this gonna work? >> the men were of japanese descent but were not american citizens, some kidnapped by the u.s. government out of latin america and brought to this country after the attack on pearl harbor. arturo yakabi was from lima peru. because kooskia was under justice department jurisdiction, these men were considered prisoners of war. they had geneva convention rights, they knew it and they exercised those rights. >> their food was better, their accommodations were better, the attorneys at the kooskia camp could even get beer. >> summertime digs have produced thousands of objects from the two

she could get no credit from any bank and all of colorado. quite remarkable purchase finally went east and got some help there. they opened a price war against her. in which they are paying the other companies -- charging the company under the cost of production to try to get her out of coal. in a dramatic moment in 1931 the miners at rocky mount fuel saved the company themselves. they they loaned her half her wages to make a payment. boy, did that draw good press. the way they press represented her helps explain why her ascension as a captain of industry did not serve as an opening wedge for other women. in many cases, this is not exclusively true. in many cases, roche's work at rocky mount and fuel was represented as the work not of a captain of industry, but that of a humanitarian. a social worker. a joan of arc. of the coal fields whose female qualities of compassion, cooperation, healing were expressed in her leadership of rocky mount and fuel, rather than her qualities of organization, efficiency, and command. rocky mountain fuel is con

you have colorado, washington state, oregon alaska and the d.c. have all theoretically legalized theoretical -- >> but the point is the federal government is not recognizing -- not legalizing. and the challenge for some of these businesses is that banks won't work with them. so a lot of them -- >> so eric holder comes out twice and says hey hey hey, no no, we're not going to bug you, because it's still a schedule i drug, don't forget we're not going to make you crazy. banks do business. they'll come in for two months and sake we really don't want to do this and they will literally walk out the door. there's still a huge cache business. a lot of security firms can't hire people fast enough. one guy told me he wanted to pay his federal taxes with cash. one state paid their federal taxes with cash. the guy said here's a 10% surcharge, because we have to process all this money. it's crazy. >> what? >> so often when we hear about problems with legal -- it's focused an edibles, they don't feel it then they eat more and then get way too high. >> you read

in colorado, the spread exceeded $7,000. in fact, while community college tuition in colorado is $3,600 a year, state data shows the median first year pay for keckical graduates from her school is $53,000, a middle class wage and as she knows, enough to raise a family. >> come give mommy a hug. >> colorado is one of several states releasing and cross referencing employment and education data so students can decide if their dream degree is worth the cost. >> students should study what matters to them and excites them but know going in what are the challenges they'll face if they graduate with a philosophy degree compared to an engineering or business degree. >> red rock says industry professionals help shape the curriculum. >> maybe you're a company and need 20 people trained in data warehousing, but that's all you need. we'll put together a program that will give you those 20 peel, but then i'm ready to close that program and move on. >> red rock is considering expanding the water quality program because employment and demog

this year, colorado and washington legalized marijuana but every other drug is absolutely illegal. few supporters of the drug war want to debate me on this. but some like allen west were willing. west says when it comes to things like drugs you have to make sure there is a level of personal responsibility. when you say personal responsibility how is it personal responsibility if government bans something? >> well, that's because we have people that don't want to accept that personal responsibility. look -- >> right. >> i was the designated driver for most of my second lieutenant buddies. their choice was i want to have a good time. their choice was to drink. >> and if somebody else wants to snort cocaine, why do you want to stop them? >> i think that's a detriment to society. what is the gain -- what is the long-term gain of snorting cocaine. >> people don't want to do it. don't they own their own bodies. >> if you want to do it do it in your own sphere. >> you would be fine with that? >> you have it in new york city. i know there are executives -- we just saw the film "wolf of wal

does new hampshire and colorado require a lot of extra tests in addition to the 17 federal tests? or do you and your local school district require a lot of extra tests? >> in new hampshire, we just require the basic federal expect tagsz of the 17 tests, plus we have alternative assessments for students with disabilities as well as students with english language learns. >> we have adopted other tests urging that the state not require those adigszal tests, beyond, again, annual test inging in third through tent grade. mr. hnderson since no child left mind passed in 2001 we have seen the gap for students in reading and matt and the dropout rate for those students has been cut in half. i wanted you to talk a little bit about what ewe saw the role of the secretary of education acts assessmented and acountability provisions played in narrowing those achievement gaps. it's a very important question, senator murray. thanks for asking it e it. we have seen man dated under esea under no child left behind have helped to push greater akoubtblety on the part of state systems to address the par

colorado actually had great loss -- laws on the books, protecting coal miners. they were just completely ignored by the coal companies and no one could force them to do otherwise. so workers needed through organization to be able to shut down an enterprise to see that the law was obeyed. progressive policies were not enough to promote greater equality between workers and employers. workers had to be empowered through organizations at the point of production. roche would later say, hope to live to see all workers in america organized in unions. she also came to believe that private enterprise carried public obligations. workers and consumers had as great and legitimate an interest in private companies as shareholders did in her view and must have their interest satisfied if justice were to be served and capitalism survive. this was the creed of a labor progressive and strikes in the 1910's created a generation of labor progressives, women and men like roche, who would in the 1930's create the new deal. sometimes historians us see this alliance between progressive

today, oversees the largest school district in colorado with 185 schools and enrollment of more than 90000 students and 13,000 employers. when i left denver public schools to come to the senate in 2009 i said if i've done a decent job tom will do a better job and there's no doubt that it's been decades. just last year denver public school students eligible for free and reduced lunch had stronger academic growth and on free and reduced lunch students statewide in math and writing to dps nonfree a reduced lunch students should more growth in their state counterparts in math by a point. on top of that inverse english language learners have outperformed the states. tom also happens to be responsive for educating my three daughters. as we begin to talk about reauthorizing can we need to hear the voice of those are fighting every day to improve our kids education, and tom boasberg invited at the top of that list, so thank you for being here today. we are all looking for during your testimony. thank you for including me in this. >> i think that boils down to it he cleaned up after you left.

some 200 families move to colorado for something they can only get here. a rare type of medical marijuana. >> i'm harry. >> nice to meet you. >> including 10-year-old braden fleming that has epilepsy. >> you're a hansom young man. >> his family came from houston to colorado springs to be on the waiting list to get a medicine called charlotte's web. >> several people's response was who does that? who picks up their life and just moves but those are people that don't have a child with epilepsy. >> he suffers from a syndrome marked by small and uncontrollable seizures. he had one in the middle of our conversation. >> or, i watch baseball. >> was that one right there? >> charlotte's web is a strain of marijuana low in thc but high in cbd. a mystery compound believed to have healing properties. >> cbd is something that has captured the national imagination political imagination, the fear of the medical community. >> he is a denver neurologist and he warns it doesn't reduce seizures for everyone. well aware of the odds the flemings moved here anyway. >> how happ

jennifer and her mother moved to colorado because the oil is still illegal in virginia. >> being separated was -- excuse me. very difficult. >> three bills that would allow the use of can that business oil are up for consideration. opponents say more trials are still needed to determine the effectiveness and safety of medical marijuana. >>> leesburg police are issuing a new warning about synthetic marijuana. they're seeing a spike in the number of people who need medical attention after ib hailing what is labeled k-2 or spice. but synthetic marijuana is actually a type of in-cense it is illegal to use or sell it in virginia. last year leesburg police investigated 40 incidents related to k-2 and so far this year they have already had 14. >>> if you love your work -- want to tell you about a conference about the keystone xl pipeline today. two senators a democrat and republican and ambassador from can in a today will talk about a bill here. republicans struck down multiple democratic amendments to the bill although they did pass a measure saying quote, climate change is real and not a hoax.

legalization in colorado is still a work in progress. but the state's a pioneer and as other states consider, or implement, new marijuana laws, they'll be watching to see how colorado does. >> sreenivasan: it was last april, more than eight months since more than 200 school girls were captured by islamic militants in nigeria. and though there have been periodic reports about their imminent release, not one of them has been found or freed. for the latest on the search and the increasing tensions between nigeria and the united states we are joined now via skype from drew hinshaw of the "wall street journal." he's reporting tonight from accra in nearby ghana. so i think the question on most americans' minds is why haven't we found these girls and why are we hearing about more kidnappings throughout the year by boca what ram? >> the short answer is boko haram is doing something very much like winning in the northeast of nigeria. the girls, there are 276 at first, and now it's down to 219 after a number of them escaped. and that's just a smal

. >> one reason why there is such a jump is because colorado started legal recreational pot sales in january then, washington state followed last summer. then, these venture capitolists are expecting more growth in the coming years because voters in oregon and alaska voted similar measures last november. this event started with an exercise that was like a cross between a shark tank episode and a speed dating session. for entrepreneurs this is an opportunity to get several precious minutes to back a number of different marijuana-related products like edible hemp oil, and gizmos to help home growers get a start. >> this is horticulture science being brought in the marijuana industry. now, you have an opportunity like coming out of the closet. >> for investors this is a chance to get in on an industry that is booming. >> this is something that is large in five years is likely to be larger than the organic food industry. >> troy dayton says hundreds of investors are interested because legal sales in this country jumped 74% last year to $2.7 billion. and if more states follow the lead of

the colorado senate race is a great example of how this message rings hollow. and look, intelligent, thoughtful strong women know that they are not helpless creatures of their gender. my wife knows that my daughter knows that, my daughter-in-law does that. all the women i surrounded myself with my life, my chief of staff for ten and a half years was a female. they would be livid if i said to them we are going to give you these jobs. you are helpless to your gender and if you don't have some help from the government you will never be able to make it. i have my face slapped into the next county for saying something like that. they are capable of doing anything they wish to do. women who that intuitively and i think they are insulted when someone tells them they can't make it without the government coming around to bail them out and lift them up. >> host: what about minorities, what can the republican nominee whether that is you or someone else do to bring more minorities into the fold for 2016? we lost a good amount in a past. >> guest: the only republicans being
