kevin jorgeson of santa rosa and tommy caldwell out of colorado became the first rock climbers to scale el capitan's dawn wall with nothing but their hands, feet and safety ropes. they spoke with cbs news' john blackstone. >>> reporter: after 19 days clinging to the 3,000-foot granite wall, tommy caldwell and kevin jorgeson were able to just walk the last few feet to the cheers of friends and family. >> although we were very dirty, quite smelly, um, all i wanted to do was just wrap myself around my wife and hold my little kid. >> reporter: their calloused fingers were still sore and caldwell's voice was gone. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: as they challenged the wall, photographers hung on ropes nearby and crowds watched through long lenses from the meadow below. but the struggle was theirs alone. you seemed to be defying gravity. >> that's what we do up there i guess. kevin jorgeson of santa rosa and tommy caldwell of colorado reached the top of el capital yesterday. they are the first to ever scale el capitan's slippery dawn wall in a free climb. they used nothing but hands and feet and safety ropes to break falls. family and friends celebrated at the top with the climbers as they finished their stunning accomplishment.
