that's the state of california. you can see the green there in the middle of the picture is the central valley. the fire is huge up in the mountains in the sierra there. the smoke was blowing the the north all weekend long, a very rural area. the other story over the weekend. tropical storm fernand made land faufl in the southern gulf of mexico. this one thankfully was near land so couldn't become a hurricane, just a big rain event. it was hot over the weekend, very hot in the central plains, 96 minneapolis with a record high. we are right in the mid summer-like pattern for the end of summer. this is going to be an end of summer heat wave, here to stay for at least the next week from texas through the northern plains. at times some of the warm air will come to the east coast. we had a little rain in the areas that need it and deserts. not a lot of us made it up to the fire areas. we didn't get a lot of relief from that. your monday forecast. the big headline is, of course, the heat. 98 in minneapolis today. that's g

we begin this morning with yet another dangerous summer wildfire in california. the sill vir fire torched thousands of acres in the southern part of the state. the fire already raised 15 homes as 40 mile-per-hour winds spread across the already pretty dry area. first scene on tuesday afternoon,

steven joins me now from berkeley, california. my first question is, how did you end up in prison in the first place? >> breaking the law. stealing cars. just -- basically delinquent. >> when you were in prison, how did you go from being in general population, what was the thing that triggered going from general population to being placed in solitary confinement? >> well, for years up until just before going into solitary confinement, i was a model prisoner. i worked as a teacher's assistant teaching other inmates how to do office work. just before i was set to parole, i got in a fight with another inmate. and while on my way to my cell, i spit on one of the officers. and they gave me four years in security housing unit for that. >> wait a second, you got four years in solitary for spitting? >> yeah, for spitting on an officer. and they gave me -- they tried to give me a three strikes case. and the judge on the trial confirmation date didn't agree that taking the rest of my freedom was worth -- was commensurate with the crime. so

it's staying dry across parts of northern california, central california. in the northeast a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms but most likely saturday night. most of the day saturday actually looks okay. sunday maybe not so much with a lot of clouds and showers. for right now we do have our heaviest rain well to north of michigan. we have a couple of lighter showers. other than that things are pretty quiet. later on this evening we'll see a chance of stronger storms especially across north dakota with isolated large hail being the biggest threat. temperatures are hot right through the middle of the country. it will feel like it's 100 to 105 especially across iowa where we have heat warnings and heat advisories in effect. as we start off the holiday weekend we're looking at temperatures to be hotter. that white line outlining all the areas that will be above 100 degrees. in the northeast, again, the showers and thunderstorms should hold off until much later in the day and feel like summer again. new york city should top out around 88 degrees. more humi

we'll go live to california where they are trying to do just that. next. >>> it is the size of a major american city. it has already cost the state of california $27 million and as of this evening, it is only 20% contained. the massive rim wildfire is burning hotter and faster than any in the modern history of sierra nevada region. which includes yosemite national park. fire is so big it's visible from space. as seen here in this nasa photograph. the smoke and ash produced by the 200-square-mile blaze prompted san francisco to temporarily shut down hydroelectric stations for fears the city's drinking water could become contaminated. nbc's miguel almaguer viewed this unrelenting force of nature from 10,000 feet above. >> roughly 230 square miles, bigger than the size of the city of chicago. all along the ridges we can see more spot fires. it's certainly quickly on the move. you can see from the fuel load down here, there are just hundreds of thousands of acres that could still burn. we're actually going to make our way down to the south side for bette

nbc tom costello is in california. tom? >> reporter: good day from here in california. just to give you a sense of where we are. right over my right shoulder, probably about five miles or so is the national park. yosemite national park. this here is the staging area for the firefighting effort. we have thousands of firefighters and you see one line of trucks here. we see a line like that almost every single block in this town. firefighters are staged throughout this town for two reasons. one, they need a quick access point to be able to respond quickly to neighboring areas that may be in trouble. but also this is a point of defense here. they are defending this town because it is on the front lines of this fire. if the fire were to jump the canyon, then it could, in fact, immediately start encroaching into this town. we have in the neighborhood of 2,000 firefighters defending this town and the nearby towns here. then inside the park you have another firefighting effort involved there with u.s. forest service and park rangers involved in that particular fight. this has b

there is the california newspaper publishers association, also the california broadcasters association saying this would infringe on legitimate news gathering. how much is that really going to be taken into consideration? >> i think that's kind of bogus. i mean, personally, i feel this case shows you that this is not just something that these celebrities don't want, but it's actually dangerous. these paparazzi they're calling law breaking. they're cussing at these kids or cussing at people trying to get photos or being lewd. if you saw halle berry a while ago, back in april, she was returning from the airport. the paparazzi were following her. there was a violent altercation between he and the paparazzi. so it is dangerous. these kids didn't choose this. they're parents chose this lifestyle, not the kids. >> it's almost as if the photographers are almost in certain instances trying to get that kind of reaction so that they can then use that angry or violent image and get bigger bucks for it. >> definitely. jennifer garner said it best. she said there's a bounty on these childrens' head
