we go live to melissa in california and the concerns about that water plant and the fire? >> reporter: absolutely. they are hoping to minimize the damage to yosemite national park. we also tried to get close to the park and were stopped by police and firefighters trying to prevent the fire from crossing the road. it has jumped the road in one place however so that is one battle left. it is a very, very tough situation for the firefighters. >> the power plant supplies power for more than two million customers. what happens there in the meantime? >> well the power plant is down and it provides 15% of the power for the city of san francisco but what officials say is there will not be any blackouts in the city and they will purchase power from the market in the meantime. there was a concern about the water source to fight the fires but they have been able to obtain more water and that is good news. >> melissa, can you see the fires where you are? >> well, up to three days ago, this place was essentially encircled by a ring of fire. the fire was everywhere. they continue to thr

scott comb joins us now from the edge of that wildfire in california. over to you, scott. >> reporter: thank you. it is relatively quiet here now. a subtle shift in the wind and this community and many others like it on the edge of yosemite would actually be literally and directly in the line of fire. that explains why there's a very large firefighting presence here, but protecting the city is one of the many tasks at hand. the fire has burned an area larger than the city of chicago. and growing. tree by tree, branch by branch, they're attacking it on the ground and from the air. progress is slow, and the fire is maddeningly unpredictable. >> one of the challenges, the fire is going to start making its own weather. we've seen significant down draft winds going in all directions. >> this is the largest of a dozen fires burning just in california. a strain on the state's limited resources and fire season is not over yet. >> this is august, what's going to happen in september in terms don't know. >> california has already spent a quarter of its firefightin

this is now the 15th largest wildfire in california's history. winds are a big problem today for crews fighting the rim fire. abc 7 news meteorologist leigh leigh glaser has more. >> you can get a sense, you see that fuzzy area. that's where the smoke plume is. very large. affecting even south lake tahoe, but you can see some of the convection right there. that is because of the heat of that fire. it just makes its own weather system. i do want you take you out to show you current readings. temperature right now, 88 degrees, relative humidity very low at 17%. tomorrow highs near 90, gusts to 35 miles per hour. there is a chance of dry lightning tuesday and wednesday. here is another look at this. you can see the smoke plume. let me take you in a little bit closer, and you can clearly see just how wide that smoke plume is. so definitely creating its own weather. we had a little bit of weather here today. we'll take a look at that coming up. >> leigh, thank you so much. for the latest on the fire, let's get to john alston live in tuolumne county. >

there's trouble for yogi bear in yosemite national park in california. firefighters are struggling to contain a coastal wildfire. they're calling it the rim fire. it's already burned 54,000 hectares. and it is close to the key reservoir that supplies most of san francisco's water. there are fires occurring across the western parts of the u.s., but yesterday it was 50, to 10 fewer. heavy monsoonal showers are helping the situation improving and more widespread heavy rain is likely. hopefully ttould prevent the situation even further, but that means the rain won't fall across the northwest. severe weather is occurring across the midwestern u.s. up into the northeastern u.s. the primary effects will be damaging winds as well as large hail. and heavy rain southwest of mexico as well due to the remains of a tropical storm. temperatures are very high in the midsection of the u.s. going up to 39 in des moines. with humidity you'd feel much hotter than this number. and 32 degrees on your tuesday. across europe, dry and pleasant across the north but our lingering
