the dropout rate for whites in california, 14%. take a look at african-americans and latinos, my gosh, the rates are 33% and 31%. so no education means few jobs. and that takes us to another issue, incarceration. where we find african-americans comprise tlathd%, that's today, 38% of california's prison population even though they're 6% of the state. critics would point to racial profiling for much of the incarceration. take a step backwards, look at the whole thing, it's fair to say california has become more sensitive to racial equality issues, no question about that, but the fact of the matter is the state has a long ways to go. >> now, you know, you are a professor at san jose state university. you see the young people. i think it's fair to say their experience is very different from the experience of the young people who were following dr. king. >> no question about that. don't forget, we live in kind of a bubble here in northern california where there are all these kinds of groups who have come together in ways that we don't s

he's driving a blue nissan versa with california license plates and may be headed to texas or possibly canada. the alert was issued after the children's mother and another child were found dead inside a home 60 miles east of san diego. authorities say dimaggio owned that home and lived there alone. they also say he had a, close, platonic relationship with the woman but they would not elaborate further. authorities say dimaggio is driving a blue nissan versa with plate 6wcu986. if you happen to see this car and license plate, you're asked to please call 911. that alert was issued just before 11:00 last night, startling a lot of people as they were getting ready for bed or already in bed. that's because their mobile phones emitted a loud warning sound and then received a text about the statewide amber alert. the system was put into place actually at the beginning of this year. for some people in the bay area, this marks the very first time they have received a text alert. the amber alert program says if your phone happens to be on vibrate only, you will not hear the audible signal. >>> a

california law says texting and driving is illegal. but texting someone you know who is driving could soon be illegal as well. a new jersey court recently ruled a person who knowingly texts a driver can share liability if that driver causes an accident. a new jersey couple injured by a teen driver who was texting sued the driver and his girlfriend who texted him. the new jersey appeals court cleared the girlfriend of wrongdoing in this case but says, if someone texts a person they know is driving, they can be held liable. >>> a new bill focusing on limousine safety following the tragic fire on the san mateo bridge faces a critical vote in sacramento. the state assembly appropriations committee is considering the bill authored by local state senator jerry hill. it would require all limos to have two fire extinguishers and pass an annual inspection by the chp. right now only li-- the limousi that caught fire was licensed to carry eight passengers, no fire extinguisher was on board. five women tragically died in that fire. >>> 5:49. we co
