the reverend john and the reverend diana cherry of the ame zion church in temple hills, maryland. i'd like to ask you to stand. i want to tell you about them. in the early '80s, they left government service and formed a church in a small living room in a small house. in the early '80s. today that church has 17,000 members. it is one of the three or four biggest churches in the entire united states. it grows by 200 a month. they do it together. and the special focus of their ministry is keeping families together. they are -- two things they did made a big impression on me. i visited their church once, and i learned they were building a new sanctuary closer to the washington, d.c., line, in a higher-crime, higher drug-rate area, because they thought it was part of their ministry to change the lives of the people who needed them. second thing i want to say is, that once reverend cherry was at a meeting at the white house with some other religious leaders, and he left early to go back to his church to minister to 150 couples that he had brought back to his church from all over america

maryland state police are trying to determine which driver ran a red light in queen anne county, maryland, that killed five people. this happened early this morning on route 50 and route 213. five people, including a pregnant woman, died when ta tractor-trailer t-boned the vehicle they were in. >> the tractor-trailer rolled over on the vehicle. >> 24-year-old regina ayres was killed, so were served boyfriend, travis, her seven-month-old daughter that her seven-year-old daughter. her pregnant sister was also killed. the family was traveling to baltimore for her baby shower. a suspected truck driver is being blamed for causing it overnight crash that injured a greenbelt police officer. the officer was in his vehicle at a traffic stop on greenbelt road and hanover parkway when he was hit by a third car. the officer suffered minor injuries. the driver that was pulled over was not injured. the driver of the third car was not hurt, but she has been charged with driving with impaired vision and driving under the influence. additional security measures are planned for a rally tomorrow in paris to

it was very early in the morning in the bar district of route 1 next to the university of maryland. adepo was in his car. himself having been at a bar. when hubbard stepped into route 1. he was struck by adepo's vehicle. he was sent flying. he was pronounced dead. adepo drove on and it wasn't until some days later that he came forward to police and admitted that he was the driver of the vehicle. today, he was sentenced to two years in prison for the crime of leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death. state's attorney angela alsabrooks says it was the right sentence but more importantly something needs to be done about the culture of drinking. >> i think we have to do a better job as a community to protect young people from these results. >> for his part in court today, adepo himself spoke to hubbard's parents. he said that he is deeply deeply sorry for what happened. he takes full responsibility and he said only that he hoped one day they can truly forgive him. in upper marlboro brad bell, abc 7 news. >> an update now on that hit and run in arlington earlier this week. abc
