in maryland, 33 degrees. and boyds, maryland, 29 degrees. the clouds have streamed in, but there are still some clear skies. the satellite radar, not bad, but a want to zoom out and show you the next weather system where its emerging from. a cold front from the west, the trough over the eastern part of the united states. that will be drawing moisture along the eastern seaboard. keeping a close eye off the coast of the carolinas. the low pressure will develop overnight and bring us rain for the day tomorrow. overnight, most of us pretty much a dry, clouds increasing. a sprinkle is possible by dawn but otherwise temperatures not falling too much. we will generally be in the 30's overnight. the futurecast, updated as of 6:00 this evening, a little more rain. it may be slowing down a little bit because this simulation at 7 a.m. is just showing spotty showers over extreme southern maryland. through the midmorning, the rain lifting north. especially east of i-95, the greatest chance of showers. there will be a pretty distinct cut off line. some of

by the federal government for road production was the national road that extended from cumberland, maryland, to wheeling, virginia. and one of the reasons for that was ohio had become a state in 1803. the country was moving west. we need to find a way of tying these new western areas in with the capital. and the easiest way of doing that in the early 19th century was to put in a road. so that road will eventually extend from baltimore westward into cumberland, maryland, uniontown, washington, pa, and then in 1818 it comes here to wheeling. when it comes here to wheeling that will give this community which at that time is about 50 years old -- it gives it the real spurt it needs to grow. over the next 20 to 25 years the population of wheeling will almost triple. wheeling starts as an outpost on the frontier. that river was the western extent of the united states in the 1770's. it's going to be a very small community. most of the buildings will be made out of logs and some kind of lumber. as we move into the 19th century and people move west, wheeling will start to grow because this is what s

virginia and maryland have already pretreated the major roads. last week it took only about two inches to totally snarl the morning commute. it caused hundreds of accidents and canceled school in some districts. >> by 4:00 tomorrow morning, the virginia department of transportation will have 700 snow trucks on the road in northern virginia alone. d-dot's going to have 200 trucks out by 2:00 this morning. and maryland did not give an exact number to us but is asking drivers to delay travel if you can. so doug walk us through this. >> well i think the big thing here is we're going to see a lot less snowfall than we did last week but it's not really going to matter. it only takes a light coating on the surface of the road to create big problems. that's why we have the winter weather advisory in effect for most of the area. nothing on the radar. that storm system still down south, but it's starting to come together. not a ton of moisture with this storm. so again we're not talking a lot of snow but the temperatures are well below freezing. we're talk

snow falling in maryland d.c. and virginia. richard jordan is live in woodbridge. >> reporter: here the snow has been steady. but it hasn't been heavy. so it hasn't amounted to much. but let me show you something we've been talking about all morning. the difference between the treated and the untreated surfaces here at this parking lot, you can see this area where the pavement is clear, that has been treated. but these parking spaces that are empty now have not been treated. and that's why you've got this light coating here it's not much but you can see it is sticking to the surface here. so that will be the difference between what is treated and untreated. on the brighf t roads, at least the major roads, have been treated. so they're looking clear. it's the side roads, the sidewalks, the parking lots like this one here where you will see that coating, that dusting of snow. and as more people try to walk on it and move around that of course gets packed in and could be a little slippery. so that's what you need to watch out for.
