officials say mcbride was involved in a car accident about 1:30 a.m. parked her car and left on foot, looking for help. according to her family, mcbride knocked on the door of this home, asking for assistance after her cell phone died. that's when a man at the home allegedly fired a .12 gauge shotgun and killed her. >> he came to do somebody great bodily harm, what he done. he took my niece. >> reporter: family members say mcbride was shot in the back of the head as she walked away. but police, who are saying very little about the investigation, told "the detroit free press" that mcbride was shot in the face. the alleged shooter claimed he believed the girl was breaking into the home. and the gun discharged accidentally. the homeowner was initially arrested but later released. overnight, many in this community expressed their outrage. in a statement to abc news, prosecutors say they've asked further investigation be conducted by the police before deciding whether any charges should be filed. but family members say, they will not rest until the person r

this all takes on new urgency in the wake of the remeisha mcbride story. she got into a car late saturday night. her cell phone died, so she went to a nearby home and knocked on the door for help. moments later, she was shot in the head. >> i'm going to read you a sentence from the press release issued to us from the dearborn heights police. and it says, a 19-year-old detroit woman was fatally shot while standing on the front porch of the home. >> this is what police told the "detroit free press." this man's claiming he believed the girl was breaking into the home. he's also saying the gun discharged accidently. so far, there have been no arrests. and right now, the prosecutor's office won't issue charges without more information from police. >> could i possibly do that? somebody knocked on my door and i pull my shotgun out and i shoot them while they're leaving off my porch, instead of finding out what was the problem. would i be standing here? no. i'd be in jail without a bond. >> michigan is one of more than two dozen states with some version of a stand

dearborn heights, the neighborhood where mcbride was shot is 86% white. mcbride is black. michigan's laws was similar to that used in the george zimmerman trial. minimum is 1 of more than 30 states that has adopted the stand your ground. it protects people who defend themselves who defend themselves against intruders under which deadly force is considered justifiable. last month, trayvon martin's mother, sabrina fulton urged congress to revise the law. >> the person that shot and killed my son is walking the streets today. and this law does not work. >> now, the self defense law, stand your ground, garnered national attention when it was tossed around during that high profile trial of george zimmerman in the tray von martin case. could it come into place in the case of renetia mcbride. the attorney with us from detroit, i would like your reaction to the news that the autopsy finds she was shot not at close range. what dowd think that tells us? >> well, when the autopsies says not at close range, that means that it was probably more than six, maximum 12 inches from her head

lawyers for mcbride's family claimed she knocked on his door simply looking for help after getting in a car accident. police say she was unarmed. mcbride's toxicology reports says she has marijuana in her system with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. does that matter? sunny, i want to start with you. the charges apparently mean police didn't buy the notion there was a self-defense reason behind this. how do you think they came to this conclusion? >> we know this was a very thorough investigation. 13-day investigation. and the police wanted to bring these charges, at least brought them to the prosecutor's office before today. and the prosecutor's office said, you know what, wait a minute. let's get more evidence. they waited until the toxicology reports came back and then made the decision. i know kim worthy, the prosecutor in michigan. we went to the same law school. i met her several times. she's extremely thorough. based on the totality of the investigation, the prosecution, the prosecutor's office felt that he does not -- this defendant did not act lawfully
